No question, (football) revenue is the life-blood---with monies allocated throughout the A-Dept---w/out it, the survival of other (sports) programs would come into question.

Back to my original point, in 2012 for example, Tennessee plays a 12 gm (reg season) schedule, including Buffalo, Cincinnati, Montana, and MTSU...that's four OOC gms, instead, at least one of these should be a BCS and/or perennial Top 10-15 team. IMO. This would ensure that Tennessee would still get it's guaranteed payout AND "W" from those three, while receiving a nice Network payout (audience attracting-marquee match up), Regional and/or National exposure, RPI Rankings, etc.
For the University, the A-Dept, and the program, the benefits, short and long term, outweigh the risks.

That's a weak OOC slate....wonder how UTK feels about that....but given the talent UT has coming back in 2012, that schedule is very championship-friendly. I think LSU drops off your inter-division schedule too, so expectations should be sky high.

I think UT fans would suffer through an OOC lineup of stiffs as long as the team was well rested enough to make a national title run by going 7-1 or 8-0 in conference play.

Of course they would...they'd love for 40,000 UF fans to fill their otherwise empty stadium every other year.

We play them again in 2 years, in addition to playing FSU every year. Our schedule is just fine, thanks.

This.

I played cards the other night at the Hard Rock in Tampa, three guys who knew each other sat down and were in Miami garb head to toe. Shirts, hats, the works.

None of them had actually gone there.

This is typical in the state. You run into guys who think its cool to be a Hurricane fan, but if you asked for directions to the campus (such as it is), you get blank stares.

This story could very easily apply to gator fans as well. You see dorks up here in TN that run around with gator stuff on and have never set foot in Gainesville.

2013. Can't Wait.

I will give Miami's bandwagon fans credit for the majority of them being in South Florida. Why they can't make the short drive up the Turnpike to watch the Canes play is another story.

And I can't wait either...it should be another great game.

Miami fans (City, not school) in general are as bandwagon as you can get. The school has 15k enrollment at any one time and only a moderate alumni base in the City. So if every student and a good number of area alums go to every game, you get 40k in attendance. If Golden starts winning, the bandwagon Miami fans will flock to Sun Life.

To tell you how fickle Miami fans are: a group of fans posted outside Dolphins training camp to taunt Chad Henne (QB) by chanting the name of the QB that they wanted to front office to trade for. Who was the QB they wanted, you ask? Kyle Orton. Kyle f'ing Orton.

Your everyday, walkin' around Miami fans are so out of touch it's comical.

Oh you're preaching to the choir my friend. Dolphin fans lusting after Kyle Orton is downright hilarious. He's not the answer in Denver (neither is Tebow apparently), Miami or anywhere else for that matter.

Miami is probably the worst sports town outside of Atlanta. I give the nod to Miami because other than the Dolphins, Miami's other sports teams have competed for championships recently...and the fans still don't seem to care.

A good friend of mine has Heat season tickets, and he said there were at least 2000 Mavericks fans in attendance for Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

I understand though....there's always something going on down there. Who can be bothered with showing up to a Heat game on time, or bothering to show up at all for a UM game?? :p

Easy there. I know Atlanta is not the best sports town but I have always felt that the entire South in general is not a great Pro-sports region.

I remember working for BellSouth and having access to Braves playoff tickets because everyone was "waiting for them to get to the World Series".

Hawks fans chant "MVP!!" when the other team's best player shoots free throws.

Many Falcons fans still haven't warmed up to Matt Ryan even though he's easily the best young QB in the league.

Atlanta will never be mistaken for Boston, Chicago or even Tampa. It's an apathetic sports town.

Do you have to go to school to be a fan?

I will give you the first 2, but Tampa. As in Tampa Bay Rays or Tampa Bay Bucs. I will say it again, the entire South in general is a bad Pro-sports region. Atlanta is in that region too. Its not that hard to figure out.

I'm not sure major league baseball is even a sport anymore in the south.

As far as pro football goes, Atlanta is on par with Miami in terms of apathy, and both cities are looking up at Tampa and New Orleans when it comes to fan support.

Tampa is yesterday's news and New Orleans is today's news.

Tampa has been good with fan support but you cannot say that about them over the last 5+ years. New Orleans, we're talking about a team that has an owner who was seriously contemplating moving the team, and not just because of hurricane Katrina.

Atlanta is not that bad of a football town. My argument is a more generalized argument about the Southern region of this country and pro sports, not just pro football specifically.

Yes, thanks to Jacksonville and Miami, Atlanta isn't "that bad" of an NFL town.

Quit being a homer...I've been to NFL games in all three cities, and there's no comparing the atmosphere in Atlanta to Tampa or New Orleans. It's like comparing LSU's Death Valley to UK's Commonwealth Stadium.

And what does New Orleans' owner have to do with Saints fans? Did Art Modell move the Browns because they had poor fan support? Hardly...

Over the past 3 seasons, New Orleans has had great fan support. It's all about making the moves to put your program in position to win.

Miami, just like any other city, has fans that want to support a winner. Nobody wants to go pay $250 for tickets, beer, parking, etc. to go sit at Joe Robbie/Landshark/Dolphin Stadium/Sun Life and watch the Dolphins lose 7-3 to the Titans.

Miami is easily the worst sports town in the country.

Dolphin fans are as you described them. They'll support the team as long as the team is winning, and even then there's no guaranteed sellout. Ever been to a Dolphins-Jets or Dolphins-Patriots game in Miami? Miami may as well be the road team.

Marlins fans? Please...two World Series titles and they can't draw 10,000 fans.

The Heat are the NBA's #1 road draw, but Heat fans can't be bothered to show up on time, if they show up at all. How is it possible that 2000 Mavs fans can get Game 6 NBA Finals tickets while the series is still in doubt?

To be fair, Cincinnati was a lot better when we scheduled that game.

Cincinnati should never be used as an example of a legitimate OOC opponent on a Tennessee message board.....Vandy maybe, but definitely not Tennessee.

Weren't they in a BCS game just 2 years back?

Now they are utter garbage, but I mean you can't foresee a program's direction when you schedule years in advance.

I think we all recognize this year's OOC schedule is weak, top to bottom, but it is not the norm.

Yes, but there is a Big East team in a BCS game every year.

While I agree that Cincinnati football, or really any Big East team in general, is not on the level of Tennessee or any other legitimate SEC team, those Brian Kelly teams were pretty good. Perhaps they only looked that way because of the conference, I can't remember specific bowl or OOC results (other than that beatdown at the hands of your Gators after Kelly left).

True. However, I'll take Cincinnati over a Buffalo, MTSU, UAB, Troy, Montana, etc, anytime. Tennessee's AD = :banghead2:

UF had little motivation going into that Sugar Bowl game after Bama spanked us in the SEC title game.

Yet Steve Addazio's offense scored 51 points against arguably Cincnnati's best team ever.

The Big East's best would struggle to win 4 conference games in the SEC.
