Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20? If you had your crystal ball out and could have told me we would hire Kiffin, he would leave after one year, and then we would hire a mid-major coach with a losing record, naturally, my preference would be to keep Fulmer around.
Without a crystal ball, it seemed to most that Phil had run his course at UT. I will never be a Fulmer "hater" ... he brought UT the only National Championship of my lifetime. I have nothing but love and respect for the man. For years, I was one of those who stated, "he won a National Championship, he should be able to stay as long as he likes". But in the end, I thought it was the right time to part ways with him.
Again, in retrospect, I think over one of the past two years Dooley was around and the East was up for grabs, Phil would have found a way to bring home an SEC East title. But either year, we still get destroyed in the championship game. I honestly believe we have the right coach to get us back to an elite status.
I believe if Fulmer was still our coach, we would be nowhere near Bama or LSU today, or in the foreseeable future, though quite possibly competing in the East. I believe in the next 5 years, Butch will have us legitimately in the hunt for an SEC title.
