Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

Frankly, I don't understand why some haven't given up already. Sometimes, it's really hard to see you guys suffer so much from your association with UT.

Yet, when the Vols do win the SEC, who'll be first in line to say they stood behind them even when times were tough? I bet I couldn't beat you guys to get in that line.

That's the definition of "fair weather fans." In the good ole days UT didn't have so many because we weren't as great as you guys seem to think we were. It wasn't until Fulmer that we won a NC (during my lifetime). He literally said he would take the Vols to the next level and he did. The level we fallen back to is about where we were. No one else since Neyland has been able to elevate us to the 'next level.'

And, I know, you only care about SEC Championships, but it sure felt great to win it all after so many years of watching other teams do win the big trophy.

There is a huge difference between being a fair weather fan, as you describe, and being realistic. There are plenty of people that pay big bucks to go see games. I have purchased my tickets and thrown my monetary support at the university when I could. I have watched every UT football game that was on free tv or pay-per-view (again on my own dollar) for as long as I can remember. Some of you might be okay with paying to see a mediocre product. I, as a fairly intelligent consumer, am not.

Don't question my fandom, Fulmer boy

Gruden would certainly be a great foil to Bama's Saban. Reading the assessment, I just don't see UTK going 6-6. 7-5 is possible if the DL doesn't hold and Claw's offense doesn't gel, but KY and Vandy are both going to be really bad this year and I do not think UCLA will be any good. I want a new hfc as much as anyone, but I just cannot see 6-6.

6-6 for this team is ignorant, but I'd rather have that in front of them from the media during the offseason than to see this team sharing the pedestal given to the 2005 team during their offseason.

Speaking of 2005, I'm not sure how so many, except maybe Ras, has forgotten what caused that year to stink so much. Hint: it wasn't the defense.

You are such a blowhard. Majors won the SEC three times between 1985 and 1990. UTK had a proud football tradition before Fulmer and they will continue to do so after he is gone. The man's best days are behind him.

Then quit spending your money so foolishly.

And Majors had a lot left in him? Talk about a blowhard.

I think everyone knows it was the coaching rather than just the defense.

I'm working with Freak to install a new feature where if someone actually says something new and enlightening when it comes to this debate, it will set off a chime a la the Emrgency Broadcast System so we can all race to this thread to read it.

I think anyone who defines 12th in the nation as mediocre should go ahead and exit now. I doubt the budget will suffer.
your single recent data point isn't carrying much weight because everyone else is actually aware of the last several.

Unfortunately, I think as long as this one has been raging, everything new an enlightening was exhausted well over a year ago.

The board would be slow without all this redundancy. It's smart to keep trying to confine this to the same thread with a new number though.

Maybe we could just post a sticky with the summary arguments for and against Fulmer.

Except we had no national championships between Neyland and Fulmer, unless you count 1967.

Doesn't change the fact that Fulmer is not all there is to Tennessee football.

This program won before him and will win after him. He is not a Joe Paterno, who took a cow pasture and made it into one of the biggest football stadiums in the country.
He is not Bobby Bowden, who took a girl's school and made it a football powerhouse.

He simply won a National Championship at a school that had won them before while having more talent than everyone else.

You are being narrow minded. It's people like you that continue to lower this football programs expectations. The standards for Tenn football should be championships. We have failed in that department since '98.
