Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

Found this in the Spring preview booklet I picked up at the O & W game.

Fulmer is:

95-32 vs. the SEC - not bad but could be better
52-13 vs. Non-Conference teams - impressive
44-33 vs. Ranked Opponents - not awful but should be better
84-16 at Neyland - would rather see 90-10
51-19 on the road - impressive
12-10 in neutral site games - needs improvement
7-1 in overtime - very impressive, can't get much better than that
8-7 in bowl games - needs improvement

one that was left out 2-3 in SECCGs - needs improvement

That's the way I see it

Some other stats I compiled.

Fulmer's record in the 90s:
76-14
5 10-win seasons
2 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Championships
1 BCS NC

Fulmer's record since 2000 (including 2005, of course)
71-31
4 10-win seasons
3 SEC Championship Appearances
0 SEC Championships

Still not bad, but obviously could be better. I don't want to try to make excuses, but the SEC hasn't gotten any easier.
GA in the 90s - 2 10-win seasons, Since 2000 - 5 10-win seasons
SC in the 90s - 0 8-win seasons (and they were just flat out bad), Since 2000 - 3 8-win seasons and the ability to hang with anyone.
LSU in the 90s - 1 10-win season, Since 2000 - 5 10-win seasons.

]"Schools that have already won, like Tennessee … when they're not winning as much, [the fans] believe you ought to be up there competing for it every year. If you're not, you just never know. Look at Phil last year. We probably saved his job when we didn't fall on that fumble."- SOS[/B]

id say thats accurate,

Coach Phillip Fulmer is 4 SEC wins behind Spurrier for 3 rd place. I think Phil catches him before it all said and done.
I have heard from a BOT member that that is accurate. He was as good as gone. All I can say is...rats.

nothing like having fans root for UT to lose

It amazes me how anyone could hate a player, coach, or anyone associated with the program so much that they would wish for a loss. Fulmer will be the winningest coach in the history of UT football.

It's going to be hard for those who want to be Vols fans to somehow not be associated with the winningest coach in the program's history, so why not make up your mind now.

On the wagon... or off?:)

Fulmer is a great coach, figurehead, and recruiter. Thank God the people that make the hiring decisions and the business people who financially back the program are smart, forward thinking, big picture people. I firmly believe in the PROGRAM is better than the TEAM mentality. Just because 2005 was a terrible season doesn't mean fire everyone and start over. Just like some people in the media "create news," I believe that a lot of vol fans "create drama."

TN is a great program. We could beat anyone we play in any given year. How many programs can say that year-in, year-out? Very few.

As was said earlier, South Carolina has the ability to hang with anyone. They could beat anyone they play in any given year. A lot of teams can say this.

I'd rather prove on the field that we can and do beat anyone we play, like we did in the 90's (except for Spurrier's gators, of course).

I never, never, never, want Tennessee to lose, but I understand the frustration/emotion that would cause HB to say that about the fumble.

I don't. Hoping for a UT loss to fit your own selfish agenda is ridiculous

I think that's a little harsh and maybe a bit self-righteous. I don't think any of those that have said they'd rather have lost that game and gotten a new coach are saying that because they're selfish -- they are saying it because they figure that the road back to the top is going to have to detour around Fulmer and they'd just as soon get started down the new road as soon as possible.

Winning that game and the SECE was great. But I can see how some folks would prefer to have ended the season with one less victory and a new start for this year. That's not all that awful a sentiment.

I 100% completely understand where Hb was coming from. It's tough having your heartbroken over and over. Our inability to make it to a BCS game speaks volumes about the state of our program and our current HC.

If someone firmly believes that we would be better off without fulmer, then I don't see the problem in them hoping that the things which would cause a termination transpire. They just have a different take on what is necessary for the program to return to the top of the heap.

Its just another way of taking the long view over the short term.

Some are fans of Fulmer, more are fans of the program.

Personally, I'd like to see Fulmer win a couple of more championships and retire on top. But for those who are convinced that won't happen... where's the joy in watching us waste further years in 9-4 chick-fil-a limbo? I can't blame them for wanting him gone.

If we dont win an SEC championship this year im gonna go nuts. It will be 10 full years without any hardware to show for anything. Thats unacceptable at UT!

Get ready to go "nuts". This is not the year for UT!

First year QB and no proven players on the D-Line. Next year will be the year!

3 SEC championship games does not suck! No....UT has not won those games, but the SEC is the best conf in the NCAA. It is not easy to win in the SEC!
