Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

For those that argue most TN fans are "educated" -- you need to re-examine college football in the South. There is NO team in the SEC with educated fans. Let's put that argument to rest immediately. When I say educated, I mean literally and figuratively.

The reason that I am a TN fan, of course, goes back to my childhood. However, after having been a UT graduate, I take a lot of pride in our coach being such a "company guy." I love it. I love that Fulmer is a UT guy all the way, no matter what. He has been loyal to our school even in the hardest of times. By explaining this, i'm also elaborating about why "most" fans are not educated.

This guy bleeds Orange more than anybody on this board -- that's undeniable. I dare someone to claim they're a bigger UT fan that Phil Fulmer. So what if they're trying their asses off and coming up a little short? If not for the 5-6 anomaly, we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.

Unless TN has a very calculated, deliberate exit-plan for Fulmer then UT football will go downhill. You might think now, because it's sexy and new, that Fulmer should be fired for some "genius" who has absolutely ONE thing in mind when coming to TN -- money, but when the school loyalty, professionalism, and character are all gone what do we REALLY have?

If your answer is "championships" then you're clearly not a very deep thinker. There's clearly more to life than winning and losing. I'm proud to be a Vol for life -- through thick and thin. I don't make the decisions about recruiting players, hiring coaches, or how much money to pay the coaches, but i'm for damn sure going to support the school no matter what.

It makes me sick that some people are so negative, almost like they HOPE UT loses in order to facilitate a changing of the guard. That is totally beyond my realm of comprehension.

To those people that come on here and rant about Fulmer dragging the program down -- what kind of fan are you? Seriously, who do you root for during the season? If you root for TN, how can you be a fan of the team's success and be so negative about the coach? Either hate the school/coach or rally around the flag.

You cannot "root" for the team to win by virtue of the coach's decision making, and then criticize the team for losing and blame the coaching staff. Give me a break -- that is moronic, and back to my previous point, most UT fans ARE uneducated.:banghead2:

Using that logic, I guess UT fans should have rallied around Wade Houston or Jerry Green. The only way to show support and help the team is if we circle the wagons around the coach.

I'll start from '99 since the crux of the issue with Fulmer is what's he done since winning a NC.
8-1 against the Gamecocks
8-1 against Vandy and that includes a 39-10 win in '06
9-0 against KY and scored 50 or more points in 3 of those games

wins are wins

Well, the same holds true here that it does for politics:

It's easier to complain about a situation than provide a viable solution.

Do I think Fulmer is the end-all to our "football woes"? No. I'm just as upset, and recall a very steamed yelling fit after the UF game in which the phrases "out of touch with reality" and "doesn't have it anymore" were uttered. Do I think he should be instantly deposed? No. I still have a tremendous respect for Fulmer because UT can't be an easy situation to be in with adament fans and less than fertile recruiting grounds. Nothing is handed out, everything must be earned. He's been... decent.

Hopefully we have a new era ahead of us... thinking back on the last 10 years of UT football don't bring together too many fond memories, and a lot of headaches. BUT! Fulmer's exit out the door has to be gradual, and I do not believe what happened today with the buyout especially is a good sign of things to come unless he's planning on retiring in the next couple of years (2-4)... which could be true because it's a fairly flat salary at 2.4 million.

Maybe forcing him to give a deposition under oath regarding his plans and outlook for the football program isn't a bad idea. Just may clear the air.. Brilliant.

It's funny how the people who like to point to Fulmer's loyalty seem to forget that fact. There was nobody, and that includes TCHFCATUTK, who was more loyal to the Tennessee Vols than Johnny Majors. It didn't save him did it?

His loyalty, his 6-1 bowl record in the last 8 seasons and his 3 SEC titles in the last 8 seasons did nothing to save Majors. He got shown the door and Fulmer has an equal (or worse) track record in his last 8 seasons and he gets a dump truck ful of cash.

When Fulmer loses to Alabama 5 or 6 more times in a row and throws the Athletic Department under the bus in public, you'll have a point.

Mullet I agree with you that Fulmer does love the university and does indeed bleed orange. But If you would rather have a coach who is a good guy, rather than a Spurrier like coach then your crazy. The only thing that matters in the end is winning and I dont care if hes a good guy or the sorriest person to walk on earth.

Does anyone even remember what it felt like to be a VOL FAN before Fulmer took over ?
I remember what it felt like before Bill Battle took over. And that's the point. Schools change coaches from time to time if the sledding gets rough.

Yeah, we were almost always gonna lose to Bama and maybe lose a few that we shouldn't have. Today, expectations are that we will lose to Florida more times than not and we will lose a few that we shouldn't have.

you know, i'm not really overly pleased with CPF over the past 7 years myself.

but i cannot stand it when you and your ilk completely discount the fact that CPF has been very successful here, and, get ready, was good for this university and program.

to just completely discount what he did the 1st 9 years of his career is wrong. it's at least as wrong to discount what's not happened the past 7.

it just hasn't, and it still isn't, as bad as you like to make it out to be.

i support Tennessee only.
how about you bill

in football, baseball, golf and every sport not named men's basketball i can say that.

However, I believe TVA/Rasputin only supports Tennessee all the way through in men's sports, but all he really wants to do is stir the pot.

I am absolutely nothing short of agreeing that he should charter a long-term (i.e. not the next 2 years) plan for him to stay in the AD, but leave the helm of the football program. I think that will happen if he continues to gain confidence in Clawson, and he feels it appropriate to turn the reigns over to him. I like Fulmer as a person, but can't agree he's the best match for the program as HFC. The biggest problem is getting him out without causing a rift, and signaling instability which would scare away recruits.

That's where you are dead wrong. It took a loudmouth from another board to get me to checking it out for myself. The media, the university and Fulmer supporters want you to look at the overall win percentage. Throw out the wins against the nobodies and see what you have.

The last seven years of statistics are enough to have anyone fired - anyone that is not in a good ole boy network that covers their back no matter what the results. Seven years is a VERY LONG TIME to coach the same D1 team so taking a look over that long of a period is more than enough to see where our program actually is.

You measure a team as to how they do against the better competition. Throw out Kentucky, Vandy, Miss State, Ole Miss, etc. - we are supposed to beat them year in and year out.

Here is where it gets interesting:
Take the results from 2001 until today against LSU, Bama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, SEC championship games, the bowls and regular season games against
'equal' opponents (Miami, Cal, Notre Dame, etc).
Folks, that's a lot of games. How has the Dean of SEC coaches performed? He has won 39% of these games. That's right - he has lost 61% of the time, has not been fired but GETS A RAISE for being a failure. The good ole boy network doesn't want us to know how big of a failure he actually is. There you go - do like I did and check it out for yourself. Hamilton and Fulmer need to go. We are at the point where failure is accepted and rewarded. PITIFUL!!
