Fulmer is still the best name.

2004 4-7 2-6 conference
2005 5-6 2-6 conference
Retired in 2006

He came back in 2009

They let him go out and retire. They handled the situation with much more class than Tennessee. They allowed him to retire instead of humiliating their coach in front of the world.

This is correct.

Fulmer is a "sure thing". That's true. He is sure to have teams that are undisciplined on and off the field. He's sure to get UT badly behind in recruiting again. He is sure to surround himself with mediocre coaches that he likes and refuses to discipline. He's sure to clap on the sideline as UT gets blown out by its rivals on a consistent basis.

The guy was great in his day but didn't see the game pass him by. He refused to change with the game... and ruined his legacy.

IF this is your idea... then go after Sonny Dykes or someone like that. Go back and look at more NFL coordinators. Go after Fedora harder or even Butch Davis.

Bringing Fulmer back would be only slightly less stupid than hiring Tressel or Petrino.

I was all for hiring that big name high dollar coach we have been needing here at UT. I wanted to mak a big splash and have other SEC teams worried that UT was going to be a problem in the future. It is becoming quite obvious that we are not in a position to do this right now. This job is not as sought after as some felt. With Hart offering unproven BE coaches 4 million a year tells me money is not the issue. It's time to rehire Fulmer and get back to winning 8-10 games a year. 4-5 years of that and we will be in a better position to hire a top coach. Get back into the top 25 on a constant basis and the job looks alot better. Why pay 4 million bucks on a chance when a HOF, national title winning coach said yesterday he would take the job, "get his staff back together" and get UT back to where she belongs. Stop this BS Dave Hart and go tell Fulmer he is our best chance to win right now. Go tell the man UT made a mistake and he would take the job. 2.5 million a year or less gets him IMO. Chavis returns and give Fulmer 1.5 million to go hire the best OC money can buy. Most of the nation thinks Fulmer was done wrong, bringing him back IMO helps the UT image day 1.

See, this is what I think is the problem. Some people here honestly think that "where UT belongs" is 3rd in the SEC East.

No, they don't. Fulmerites act like he's some Bowden or Snyder that built us up from nothing. That's absurd.

I'd rather have Chavis as head coach. Fulmer is old and hasn't coached for 5 years. All he could do is clap his hands. We'd be mocked for going backwards.

If you happen to read anything outside of this message board, alot of rival fans/media think Fulmer was fired to soon. He deserved the chance to fix his mistake in hiring Clawson. 9 and 10 wins the 2 years before kind of speak to that. 15 winning seasons shows he built up the program just fine on his own. 3rd in the East would be a very welcome thing right now. I get people want titles. When you have big east coaches turning down double their current salary, it speaks to where UT is right now. Keep telling yourself we can hire a coach to win the SEC next year. When you wake up, maybe you will wise up.

Here's the thing.

If our goal isn't 3rd in the East, why on Earth would we hire someone with whom we know that's where we're going to be? Why not hire a winner who actually has a chance at getting us to the top?

People have this misconception that going 9-3 for a few years is going to make our job look better. That means nothing. Other coaches already know that if you're a good coach, you can win here, and if you're a bad coach, it'll show. What makes our job attractive is our rabid fanbase (as crazy as they can be), our top-notch facilities, and our obvious commitment to football. The job isn't "getting less attractive" because we just hired a crappy coach. You think others don't already know that we've been bad because of said crappy coach?

And, anyway, if we hire Fulmer when do you see us making another hire? Do you think it would be after an 8-4 season? No, because he wouldn't leave and our fans would be saying he deserved a raise. When he left, it would be after a season just like this one, or like 2008, and we'd be right back where we are now.

I have a question but the first few years that fulmer took over was it not some of majors players that helped him achieve some of his wins?just a question not a rub to any one

Shouldn't discredit what he accomplish because he inherited some talent. Man took us to the pinnacle of college football and made us one of the meccas of football.

That said, I'm not sure he still has the drive and heart to get back to his winning ways but I said it before Strong allegedly declined our offer, I'd sure as hell take him over paying 4mil/yr to an undeserving (of that kind of money) and unproven (in the SEC and against good competition) coach like Strong.

The fact is Hart should have seen this coming at a minimum since mid October and should have had his plan and man in place. That said, it is what it is.

Right now, of the coaches available that would take this job there are Petrino, Tressell, Fulmer, and a host of chances with lower level coaches or coordinators.

I don't want Petrino or Tressell anywhere near UT. We don't need that right now.

Financially it would be stupid to upgrade some $400,000 a year coach to a 2.5 million dollar salary with a 6 million dollar buyout on the off chance he'll be successful.

Financially and IMO, the best for the University and the Big Orange would be to hire Phillip Fulmer back, keep Jim Chaney and hire the best defensive coordinator we can find.

Coach Fulmer should never have been fired. That is painfully obvious at this point and to continue trying to "Fix this Mess" and save face by not admitting that isn't working and is only making matters worse.

The other 100 threads discussing this same thing weren't good enough for you?

He has everything we need to get the program back to being competitive and implementing a coaching search, and subsequent transition, upon his retirement.

Hart should not be allowed back at McGhee-Tyson with out a coach stepping of the plane with him.

Well as of right now it seems that there is not a top tier coach as some call it around that want to coach at the UT. This is the second coaching search since Kiffin flew the coupe and so far both times we are not able to draw any type of interest from again what some would call top tier coaches. Take Fulmers name off the resume and compare it to any other that they have talked about and it would be head and shoulders above the rest. The only reason no one wants to think about it is simply because of the name Fulmer.

How do you think the kids would react when Peyton says congrats Coach Fulmer then adds something like "he was my college coach one of the best".

Not to mention all the other NFL players active and retired.
And with media the way it is it would get around fast.

It has nothing to do with the name Fulmer. I'd just rather have a qualified coach who could be great and could be terrible than a guy who we already know is going to be consistently average.

I understand what you are saying, but when you say average understand the man was 152-52 in 17 seasons and won the east 4 times and won two conference titles and played in the conference title game 6 times oh yeah and he also won a National Championship. He only had two losing seasons. I am just saying to me that speaks for itself. Everyone has to understand the pipe dream of getting a high tier coach now is gone. I can say I would rather have Phil than anyone they are left with now. If not that then I just hope they get someone who can stop the dam from breaking.

I don't even care anymore. Bring back the big man. I'm so tired of hiring people that don't care about the program. Big Phil loves the program, would be a hell of a recruiter, and would bring an offensive power unlike any we've seen before.
