Fulmer predicts bowl game for Team #118

Now this is a post I can agree with. I personally think those who still believe firing Fulmer was a good thing, have too much pride to admit that they were wrong.

No, it's not having too much pride, but rather knowing what was happening on the inside. Obviously, very, very few if any on the site knows what was happening behind closed doors and the media was just guessing like most VOL fans. Phil had a chance to keep his job--all he had to do was beat USCe and did not. Yet again he got his tail handed to him by the ol ball coach. If Phil would have won, Mike would have had something positive to present to the boosters that probably would have gotten Phil one more year, but he had nothing positive about the present........NO coach can continue to lose to their conference rivals and keep their job, period.

Now, to take this one step farther, Kiffin was available and publicly stated that he would be interested in coaching at the college level. This now become the perfect storm for Phil. Losing consistantly to rivals hurt Phil more than anything especially to the ol ball coach. Then once Lane agreed to discuss the potential to coach at UT and the coaches he would bring, Phil's fate was sealed. Was it time for Phil to go, yes. Was his firing handled correctly, absolutely not. Phil deserved being treated with the utmost respect and professionalism but did not receive it---I believe this is the primary reason most fans are still upset......not because of his dismissal but the manner in which it was handled.

As for all this talk about Lane breaking all these violations, he had the green light to break as many secondary violations as needed to get UT back in the national conversation.

As for everyone badmouthing Derek, he was the only coach to even consider taking the position. He certainly was not the first choice, but after being turned down in double digits, Derek became the only choice. He was the only coach that had enough backbone and balz to step up to the plate. Personally, I admired the man for taking the job considering the roster, fan separation, booster moral, and general condition of program. Derek did stabilize the program and was a DC away from success and contract extention. I cannot fault a person for taking a position no one else would even consider including Jon Gruden.

As VOL fans we all know how rough the past few years have been but instead of living in those troubled years we should be focused on the present and near future. We have one of the better head coach and staff in college football, and as fans all we need to do is take a deep breath, relax, and give these coaches time as changing coaches repeatedly is not the answer. I am thankful UT has Butch and have full confidence he can win championships.

Good post Mr Vol. I ask, however, how could Fulmer have been fired with any more dignity when he refused to step down?

The problem was that we either fired Fulmer when we did so we could be proactive in the replacement search or wait until after the 5-7 finish and be behind the ball

Fulmers thinking is if "we get the breaks" like he did when he was winning. If we don't we'll be 5-6 like it was when he wasn't getting the breaks to make up for lack of coaching.

SECe has never been weaker in the history of the conference since Tebow graduated. SECe has absolutely been there for the taking.

We would have lit up the East with Taj and Bryce et al. and Fulmer would have had all these legacies as high school juniors.

Considering what a train wreck the SEC East has been over the last 5-6 years, Fulmer probably would have gotten us to two more SEC championships. That isnt to say we would have won them, but still we would be looking at 8-10 win seasons.

By the way, I am not anti Butch. I do think he is capable of resurrecting the program. But the Fulmer situation was handled terribly and we have paid a heavy price for our fickleness. And to see the folks on Volnation running down the guy who made the program the thing we dream it will be again is sickening.

Majors did that. Fulmer was gifted an almost-championship caliber team with phenomenal coordinators. From the moment one of those coordinators left, he never won another championship of any kind.

Well. Let's just evaluate that. Where did getting rid of Fulmer get us? Hmmmmm.5 years later and the only thing we've actually shown on the field is what exactly? Moral victories? Winning seasons? Bowl game victories? Sniffs of a chance at SEC championships? No. No. Our only success in the last 5 years is in recruiting for the last 2 years. That hasn't transated to wins.....yet. for now the only thing we can say is......."soon". So turning up our nose at Fulmer shows our stupidity.

You should be mad at the AD

Hart was the one that broke up the defense, remember no contract extensions ? then his buddy from Bama was hired ?

I personally thought it was a bad deal firing Coach Fulmer,he would have beaten the Generals record for most wins in Tn history and UT wouldn't have sucked ass like they have as of late,a couple of bad years and you fire a coach with his love for the University ? get real

Is it me or does Fulmer take every opportunity to take passive jabs about how the program was better when coached.

Maybe the Vols were better off with him, but many of his players were undisciplined thugs, and were constantly embarrassing the program with their off the field issues arrest. Fulmer's players even led the nation in most arrest one year prior to his termination. The Vols may be losing on the field right now but at least they aren't getting arrested every other week either.

Please check Kiffin's record as an all time head coach everywhere. It's not good.

He turned Crompton into a serviceable QB and got a decent running game out of one of the worst O lines this school has ever seen.

Bad record or not, the man can coach the offensive side of the ball. Should have clarified.

It's encouraging that Fulmer believes we will be an improved team. The man obviously knows football. As for Kiffin, he's the OC at Bammer now. If some of you love him that much, go root for Bammer. They could always use a few more bandwagon fans.

Fulmer is right. If we have a good coaching staff there is no reason we shouldn't make it to a bowl. If we don't, heads should roll below Butch.

I agree! I remember the TV announcers speaking of his W-L record with minimum of five years then again with 10 as the highest percentage but they never spoke of how good the program was when he became head coach!

Fulmer never, ever played a schedule as difficult as this one either, the SEC has become much, much, more competitive since he was let go!!

Wrong. Chavis was LB coach 93-94.

Larry Marmie left and CPF promoted Chavis in '95.

You have forgotten what it was like losing to Bama every year 70-81, 86-92.

Phil had his faults, but he raised the bar from Majors great teams.

Phil was polar opposite to Majors' style of firing coaches to quiet the unhappy fans by being loyal to a fault.

The point of my comment was that both coordinators were already on staff. Everything he needed to succeed was there already. He only ever hired one coordinator who wasn't an assistant he worked with before becoming the HC and that was his last year
