Fulmer's best two teams

The 99 team was stacked too. Really no reason we shouldn't have met FSU for a rematch that year.

played in the NFL--maybe more. Absolutely loaded. Fulmer was a terrible game-day coach--far too conservative--but he and his staff recruited incredibly well for a decade. Not sure how they did it, actually, but they did. It helped that we got things rolling when a lot of SEC teams were down. LSU was terrible in the 90s, bama was not very good for several years, and we kicked georgia's butt for, what, 9 years in a row? Ah, the good ole' days.

And that's why football programs all over the world are breaking down the door to hire him

Why does somebody always have to slam Fulmer, if Butch wins like Fulmer we would be electing him to the HOF after his first two years, think about it 152-52.

And UT football has pretty much been in the sh!tter ever since.

2003: 10-3

2004: 10-3

2007: 10-4

I am sick and tired of people saying we have sucked since the 2001 SECCG. It's just not the case. We have sucked since Dooley took over. Yes we had bad years in 02 and 05, but even then we beat teams like Arkansas and LSU. Everybody thinks that the 90s is representative of how UT football has been historically, but outside of Neyland's stints, that has not been the case. For example, we went through a very rough time from the mid 70s to the early 80s. I propose that 2002-2007 was not "the sh!tter", but a good time to be a Vol when you look back at all-time results.

I knew some dip sh!t would come on here and bring up a few years...NOTICE I SAID "PRETTY MUCH"!

2007? Yes, the overall record was decent. But getting your ass handed to you in the 3 losses, especially UF and Bama, isn't exactly anything to brag about.

I know what UT's winning percentage is all time. It about 67-68%. Since 2001, UT has lost 5 or more games 7 times. Yes, I would say UT football has pretty much been in the sh!tter since 2001.

Yeah man whatever. I'm just so desperate to expereince any semblance of winning that those years look great to me.

1998 and 2001. 1997,2003,1992. 1995, 2004, 1996. think those were without a doubt phils best teams at tennessee. 2001 was maybe the most talented but came up short because they didn't deliver in the end but they had some of the best road wins in TN history. kinda of sad to think with all those teams only one won a national championship.
It isn't sad at all actually. Do you know how many coaches have more than one title? It's a pretty short list. It would be nice to have more, but we should be damn proud to have the one.

I hear you. Sorry about that.

I do think this coaching staff is doing the right things to help UT compete.

They will tell you the SEC was weak when he won. I have been to this movie before.

I forgot about Clausen's team winning against Spurrier in 2001, but you can credit that awesome running attack for that one. As for Clausen being more "clutch" than Peyton - really? Some of y'all do realize Peyton led the Colts to the biggest playoff comeback ever, right? And didn't he throw the game winner in the SEC championship against Auburn? How many SEC rings is Clausen wearing?

And the 2007 season was no biggie. Sure we won the East. We also got DESTROYED in all of those losses. Winning the division ain't no big thang - of the 14 teams in the SEC, only five have not made the SEC title game since it's inception in 1992. Two of those teams played in the SEC for the first time last year.

I agree Casey was one of the best QB's in TN history. Some people didn't like him because he was this laid back dude from California. He was the coolest under pressure, Had a great throwing arm. He was a good field General. boy,I miss those days...those times were Happy, Happy, Happy! :)

But how long did it take USC and UGA to make it in the first place? I'll answer that for you. Ten years for UGA (first went in 2002), and 19 years for USC. Miss. State hasn't been in it in 14 years, and then the 3 teams that haven't been in it ever, so 21 years. We bash Fulmer for winning when the SEC was "down", but couldn't those other teams argue that they've not been in it because the rest was good? No? Of course not, because that'd give Fulmer credit. Alabama went 9 YEARS without going, Florida went 5 without, Georgia went 6, all in the 2000s. The most consistent participants were Tennessee and LSU. I'd take that back in a heartbeat.

14-1 on the road and undefeated at the swamp where Peyton never won. All around I would say Peyton was better but I'll take Casey in a big game anytime.

I will give major kudos to Casey and, particularly, Travis Stephens for going into the Swamp and physically whipping them in 2001. That was a very potent Florida team that they beat. Other than that year, however, Spurrier's best teams were quarterbacked by Danny Wuerffel. Those were the teams that Peyton went head-to-head with in '94, '95 and '96.

If you gave the '95, '96, or '97 teams the D from the '98 or '01 teams they would have won the NC. Although those teams leaned on Manning a little too much and it cost them in some games.....UF!

The '98 team wasn't that strong on O as the season started but they played to their strength (O-line) and got better as the season went along. By the end of the year, even with losing Lewis, there wasn't a weak link.

Very well said and spot-on.

If the early '90 teams had the 2005 defense they would have won another NC. I know the season was shocking because of the QB play, but that defense did amazing things considering the pressure the offense put on them.

Chief actually became a better DC with time.

I think in '94 Terry Dean started for UF and Todd Helton started for UT....BAD GAME!

stephens was the mvp of that 01 fla game no doubt. yeah our defenses in the mid to late 2000's were really good, it's just that our offenses were horrible. hopefully we can have a national title here in the next few years.
