"Watching some [bowl] games, when you knew you were better than 90 percent of the teams you're watching."
It seems to me that Fulmer needs to stop hanging out with the UT basketball players!
I'll simply use my favorite Bill Parcells quote: "You are what your record says you are."

I think it was more or less a lament in knowing that you could have done better than you did. Let's face it, we did beat ourselves a lot last year. And he knows that. I don't think he's "denying" anything.

more of a "what could have been", not what should've been or would've been, but what could've been had they done things differently.

I guess a four year average of 8-4 counts as greatness to many on this board.

statistics are like a buffet bar....you can get whatever you want, depending on your tastes.

And so this thread comes to a screeching hault.
I thought you said you don't get involved in squabbles related to the head football coach?

I think it's a little bit self fulfilling the way some people want him to be in denial so they take quotes and assign denial to them . . . but I can't argue with the above quote. We were 5-6 because we were 5-6.

no one is calling 8-4 "greatness". but its not "terrible" or "awful" either. it's just not what we're used to....9 & 10 wins became the standard. 8 wins for us, are probably average. Less than 8, well, i think we all know what happens now when we have less than 8.

Even though it's tempting, I'll leave the buffet bar reference in a Fulmer thread alone.

I don't and won't get involved, I was just voicing my pleasure toward rts's post.

Fulmer is fat!!!!! :dance2:

It's almost as bad/old as the Florida fans and "Vol fans don't have all their teeth!!"

8-4 at a program with UT's resources, if that isn't bad or terrible, you can see it from there.

It was too easy. Would have been like hunting quail with a machine gun.

depends on the point of view you want to take from those 8-4 years....you can lament over the things we did wrong in the 4 losses, and predict failure for the next year, or you can take what you can positively from the 8 wins and build on that, and predict improvement the next year. Granted, this season, that's pretty much a crap shoot based on last year's results. And i'll even grant you that at a program like ours, where we are used to 9+ wins a year, it's hard to accept 8 wins. I don't like it anymore than you do.

but i also realize there are 9 other teams in the SEC trying to do the exact same thing we are, and 5-6 of them are capable of doing it. And we're just not going to do it EVERY year, or maybe even as often as i'd like. I mean it's not like there isn't any competiton in this conference....

(and i say 9 other teams, because i don't think Vandy and UK are actually trying to get better at football, lol.)

If 8-4 becomes the average, that will be sad.

Well i think that's what we're all hoping doesn't happen...I don't think anyone would say that if we were a perennial 8 win team going forward, that our issues had been "fixed". Nor would this coaching staff. but to have a few sprinkled in here and there isn't a crime....but you're right, we can't let that be the standard.

i mean, really, one losing season in 20 years, a bad year at TN is winning only 8 games....life's pretty good as a UT fan. Of course we'd all want win more every year, but if you really look at it, if that's as bad as it gets for us, we still got it pretty good.

Of course this all fine and good right now. the difference maker will be what happens this coming season. This season will be a good indicator of what direction this program is really headed in.
