i mean, really, one losing season in 20 years, a bad year at TN is winning only 8 games....life's pretty good as a UT fan. Of course we'd all want win more every year, but if you really look at it, if that's as bad as it gets for us, we still got it pretty good.

Of course this all fine and good right now. the difference maker will be what happens this coming season. This season will be a good indicator of what direction this program is really headed in.
I would agree if it were only the occasional 8 win season. However we've won 8 or fewer games in 3 of the last 6 seasons.

ah yes, but we've also had 3 seasons of 10+ wins....see, it just depends on how you look at it....

The 11-2 in '01 was a great season. The 10-3s in '03 and '04 weren't exactly dominating performances.

HELLS BELLS!!!!!!!!! in one breath you say 8 win seasons should not be our norm then you come back and say that 2 of our 10 win seasons weren't up to par either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too dont see why you think those 10 win seasons were so special.

UT didnt finish ranked in the top 10 in 03 or 04, and in 03 UT didn't finish ranked in the top 15.

Is that the state of UT football now? A season finishing ranked outside the top 10 is a great season?

Didn't say they weren't up to par. See my initial reference to the Parcells quote. I'm simply saying, given the number of mediocre performances in each of those seasons, I'm not going to base any optimism on those two years. For example, if anyone in America not named Brock Berlin is the QB at Miami in '03, we lose. How would that season look then? The record is the bottom line on your season, but all 10 win years are not created equally. Some leave you with a much better feeling than others.

here's the "yeah, but". Yeah, but, he WAS the qb that season. we can't do anything about that. Neither can they. But that team was loaded with talent. and we did after all WIN that game. was it ugly? yeah, but i'm not going to give it back cause it was "ugly". we won. bottom line.

some people had similar opinions about the UF game we won and the 5 OT bama game...."luck". Luck's a part of the game. some times you have good and sometimes you have bad. You tend to have more good luck when you have better teams and more bad luck when you have not so great teams. And them sometimes....well, sometimes you just get a raw deal.

the bottom line is, we still got our 10 wins. and when the season is over, you can't be unhappy about winning 10 games. you might be unhappay about some of the things that happened in some of the games, but you're not going to give any of 'em back.

These are the same rankings that put a pathetic #2 Oklahoma up against S.Cal and screwed Auburn out of a shot at the NC, so yeah rankings mean a whole lot to me, let's face it unless you go undefeated with this BCS system what difference does it make what you're ranked it's all regional ,political BS anyway, all I'm saying get *&&*^ing over it and let's concentrate on the up coming season because it's the one that matters now!

Again, no one would call it "great". but 10 wins, is 10 wins, no matter how ugly a game was or where you finish in the rankings. There's abslutely nothing wrong with finishing a year with 10 wins, no matter what you're ranked.

Personally, the rankings have really just PO'd me off the past few years. I mean i still pay attention to them, but at the same time, i'm more concerned with beating the rivals in our conference. there's nothing that can be done about the rankings except complain about them.

Don't disagree. However, if you're asking me to draw hope for the future based on those two seasons, that's a bit of a stretch.

I think that's already been addressed...i said it earlier, there were signs of what we went thru in 05 as far back as the 02 season. but the bottom line for those seaons, as Coach Parcells would say is "you are what your record says you are". and we were a 10+ win team for those seasons. And at the end of the day, that's all that mattered at the time.

We were a 10 win team in '03 and '04, no + to it.

I can honestly look back to last seson and say theres not a team on that schedule, with the coaching staff we had, the players we had....that we didnt have the potential to beat. We just had a domino meltdown so let's all just bury it and hope that the changes that were made were the right ones, and that the problem has been fixed.

Strangely, one team we beat(LSU), was the only team we played that I thought had significantly better personnel than we did.

me too. UGA and LSU were the scariest teams on the schedule. I thought we had a little somethin for everyone else....and we did, it was called fumbles, and dropped balls....Christmas is early for the SEC when you played TN!!!

we'll be a grinch next season.

Go Vols.

me too, again. I don't know if all the changes and attention placed on Discipline etc... will translate in to W's, but like i said in another thread....it's one thing to get beat by a better team. It's an entirely different thing when you continually beat yourself, which we did plenty of last year.

I don't want to step into this argument. I just want to forget about what might have been and think about what can be. I see two positives for next year.

1. Let's don't forget most of us were blaming Randy Sanders for the offensive collapse. Well, now he's gone and Cutcliffe's back. So we got what we wanted there.

2. That bad year can be a blessing in disguise. Up through this season, everybody was laying in the weeds for UT. Maybe they won't be next season until it's too late.

The eternal optomist speaks again.
