Fulton at Maryville

49-18...my momma is a happy lady tonight! Go Rebels. I wonder who is hurt more, Fulton fans or everyone in Blount Co that would love to see Maryville lose?

Tyler and Ryan Maples are brothers. My nephew was QB in GQ's 1st season. He threw a lot of TDS to Ryan Maples.

Last night was 2 outstanding teams playing each other. Maryville won because they made fewer mistakes. Fulton has a ton of athletes.

Just now reading through this hilarious thread. Wow!
Maryville does not recruit bc they don't have to recruit. I moved from NC to TN in 11th grade and its reputation was enough to convince my parents to move to Maryville. The school system is the best in the state, the Athletics teams are outstanding and the girls are cute.

You MHS haters are really embarrassing yourselves. Just give them respect and be a grown up. They've earned it, with not a ton of great players.
Why is this the topic on here anyway? How about more talk about the game? Is that kid alright?

About as bad as saying they recruit with absolutely no evidence.

I have lived in Blount County since 1973. Maryville without a doubt recruited back in the 70's and 80's. Now the school is just a huge magnet drawing the best football players from within Blount county, except Alcoa. That gives you a pool of players from three 6a schools funneled into one. Throw in an exceptional head coach and you have the making of a dynasty.

Is he alright? No clue. In the replay, though, you could clearly see him move his arms and legs after he went down, so that was good to see.

Phillips or Wilkes?

I'm not from TN and have no kids, so I have no ties to middle. Born and raised in FL, attended UT and family relocated to KY while in school. I've been a TN resident for exactly 2 of my 30 years of life.

My apologies :hi: I just get tired of hearing how all the middle Tennessee teams beat each other up during the season and that is why they don't win championships.

Fulton's defensive line coach has been there for 51 years? That's dedication!

That's Bob Black. He is a Knoxville legend. He may have been the head coach for awhile, but his son Rob is the head coach now. He used to be an SEC baseball umpire as well. Super great man.

Congratulations to Maryville. They are clearly the better team. I am proud of my Falcons, as they will still make some noise in the post-season this year. This game will be a good experience for them, and I think it will be much closer next year. I used to hate Maryville just because they were so good year in, year out. Now, I respect and pull for them, because they are a great program with a great coach and represent East Tennessee very well.

Spoken like a good-sport.
It's like they pointed out last night, the coaching staffs support each other at state every year. Both produce great football, and that's fun for everybody.

That freshman QB of yours is going to be a handful in the near future. Played much better than I anticipated against Maryville.

Sounds like it would be Phillips.
I was class of '99.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Phillips get hurt half way through the season and then Wilkes came in and was lights out throwing like five or six touchdowns in one game?

Yeah Fulton has some impressive athletes at QB and WR.

For Maryville TD Blackmon is one hell of a player. My goodness he was everywhere.

It's Wilks - no E in the last name.

Scott is on the strength and conditioning staff at the U of Louisville now:

I got to know Scott's Dad, Phil, very well when Phil was on Matt Lowe's staff at Powell after he left Maryville College. Phil was an outstanding football mind and one of the most classy individuals I ever had the opportunity to get to know. Just a salt of the earth guy.

I'm sorry but they did not recruit in the '80s. From '85-'91 they were absolutely terrible especially under John Olive. Their one year under Emory Hale ('88), they were okay but still lost badly to Sevier County. They had no athletes at all (with the exception of Ralph Lee who played at MTSU) and very little size. I would, however, say that their athletic director at the time, Jim Cambell (the little guy) was a man of great integrity who did a lot in their community for charity and also assisted quite a bit in the organizing of Blount County youth leagues (and I played biddy league basketball at MHS in the 80s despite living in Knoxville) and also the Smoky Mtn Classic softball tournament at Sandy Springs. I met him many times. Maryville simply wasn't cheating back then and if they were they were plain terrible at it because they sucked. Between '88 and '91 they lost 4 straight times to Alcoa and lost twice to William Blount and even lost to us (Bearden) badly!

I didn't claim they do, I'm just not dismissing that it may happen. Considering you have no ties to Maryville you sure slurp all over them.
You're right - I was confusing you with jokerman who claimed they recruit. And I'm not "slurping" all over them. Just can't stand idiots who blindly claim they must recruit because they are so good.

I would love to know what player Maryville had from 1988-1991 that would have even been worth recruiting to a fraternity flag football team on their 3rd keg of beer. Some people here seem to think they have always been good and that is just not the case. The team they had in 1990 could not have beaten most Pop Warner teams. They have gotten good coaching since Tim Hammontree took over, I believe in '94 but for the most part their success is the product of having a great academic reputation within a burgeoning community and most importantly, I think, is that they get kids to play in large numbers at an early age and get them in front of excellent youth league coaches. By the time they get to high school the fundamentals of blocking, tackling, route running and player safety have been drilled in to them. I doubt Quarles has to spend much time teaching his players how to line up in a huddle (but there are some coaches in this area that definitely do).

I believe there's some truth to it though. Like I posted earlier, the 6th seed in Ravenwood's 8 team regional last year had an 8-2 record. That kind of record disappeared after the 2 or 3 seed in Maryville's bracket.

Look at where an overwhelming majority of the P5 D-1 recruits in the state of TN come from, it's not east TN. So, the mid-state teams are going against the best talent and I don't think that's a point that can be argued.

Sorry but you are wrong and to say they had no athletes is a joke. Tennessee signed one of them around 85. I lived in the county close to the city and have first hand knowledge of players that were recruited.

I believe that you are talking about TJ Miles from 1985 but of course, his last season would have been 1984 and he certainly was not recruited by MHS. TJ never played for Tennessee and I believe transferred to Carson-Newman where he also never played. I know exactly what I am talking about when I say that Maryville had no talent from 1988-1991. I had a friend named Stephen Coleman (I did some commercial business with Anderson Lumber Co) who was their QB from '89-'91 and died a couple years ago of brain cancer that would have said the same thing. They were terrible and the results reflected that.
