Fulton at Maryville

I believe that you are talking about TJ Miles from 1985 but of course, his last season would have been 1984 and he certainly was not recruited by MHS. TJ never played for Tennessee and I believe transferred to Carson-Newman where he also never played. I know exactly what I am talking about when I say that Maryville had no talent from 1988-1991. I had a friend named Stephen Coleman (I did some commercial business with Anderson Lumber Co) who was their QB from '89-'91 and died a couple years ago of brain cancer that would have said the same thing. They were terrible and the results reflected that.

I never said they were a dynasty in the 80's only that they recruited which they did.

Well, as long as they paid tuition I don't even see a problem with it. I just think it's funny now, that when I tell people that Bearden beat Maryville 31-0 my junior year in high school that pretty much nobody around here believes me.

Yeah they did have a few lean years. The way they have dominated Heritage and WB, schools with larger enrollments is amazing. Can't find the records but I'm guessing those two schools combined haven't beat Maryville more than a handful of times combined from 1977 to the present.

MHS sent Brett McBrayer to UT a couple of years before TJ. We had a few solid players from time to time, but nothing dominate like they have been of late.

Edit: maybe it was a year before not sure

In 1990 WB 3-7
Heritage 3-7
Alcoa 11-2
Keep in mind the players funneled to maryville from within Blount county do not come from Alcoa, those players for the most part stay and play for the tornadoes. 1990 looks like a year where Blount county was completely without football talent and John Olive was a less than an average coach.

I don't believe Maryville recruits like they did in the 70's and 80's they don't need to anymore. But the recruiting that happened back then laid the foundation that Maryville is enjoying today. You have three 6a schools funneled into one as far as football talent goes, that plus very good coaching is the only way to explain the dynasty we are seeing today.

I believe there's some truth to it though. Like I posted earlier, the 6th seed in Ravenwood's 8 team regional last year had an 8-2 record. That kind of record disappeared after the 2 or 3 seed in Maryville's bracket.

Look at where an overwhelming majority of the P5 D-1 recruits in the state of TN come from, it's not east TN. So, the mid-state teams are going against the best talent and I don't think that's a point that can be argued.

I agree that there's more talent in the midstate, though East Tennessee is starting to get more. It depends on which classification a team is in as to who has the easiest route to the championship.

I'm sorry but they did not recruit in the '80s. From '85-'91 they were absolutely terrible especially under John Olive. Their one year under Emory Hale ('88), they were okay but still lost badly to Sevier County. They had no athletes at all (with the exception of Ralph Lee who played at MTSU) and very little size. I would, however, say that their athletic director at the time, Jim Cambell (the little guy) was a man of great integrity who did a lot in their community for charity and also assisted quite a bit in the organizing of Blount County youth leagues (and I played biddy league basketball at MHS in the 80s despite living in Knoxville) and also the Smoky Mtn Classic softball tournament at Sandy Springs. I met him many times. Maryville simply wasn't cheating back then and if they were they were plain terrible at it because they sucked. Between '88 and '91 they lost 4 straight times to Alcoa and lost twice to William Blount and even lost to us (Bearden) badly!

Emory Hale was a heck of a coach. It was at Oak Ridge for a time. They still tell stories around Oak Ridge about him.

He was a great coach. Unfortunately, he forced a player with asthma to run sprints after practice (and reportedly denied him access to his inhaler) and the kid's parents complained to the school board. He was forced to resign after having a pretty good season at Maryville.

Yeah ive heard stories of him going to parties and dragging his players out. He won 3 state titles at Oak Ridge.

They get around the tuition part when they feel they need too...A lot of teams recruit in several different sports.

Their fathers are brothers. They are cousins. Rocky top talk does not trump biology.

Ryan and Tyler are brothers, they have a sister who was a basketball player at Maryville. I have known this family my entire life!!! My parents are friends with their parents and my dad grew up with their dad.

Ok some of what you say is true and some isn't. I was a student t Maryville during this time and know a little about this program. When I was in 8th grade Maryville lost to Alcoa at Alcoa when a guy named Willie Lundy dominated the game and actually waved at the crowd on a long touchdown run, this was the first time in 15 years that Alcoa had beat Maryville. My freshman year '86 Maryville had a solid team and was knocked out of the playoffs in the quarter finals by AE. They went back to the playoffs the next year '87 but couldn't advance past the first round. My junior and senior years Maryville jumped up to AAA and didn't make the playoffs. So yea you can say they were terrible, I think we won 4-5 games my senior year, I quit going to games and went out drinking 😀. During this time Alcoa was solid, they had solid players all over the field, guys like Rusty Chambers, Chad Smith, Shannon Mitchell, Kevin Jackson and UTs own William Williams. BTW Jim Campbell was a great man, I also played in that Biddy League basketball league
As far as athletes go, they had some pretty good ones come through. Bo Spears and Mike Kirby went on to play baseball at TN Tech, Ralph was at MTSU, Jamie Richard played hoops at Amherst in Mass. Mike Parker played basketball at Walters State, Rod Cross bounced around at a few colleges playing hoops, Clint Newman was a walk on at UT in basketball. Some of the better players just walked away from it and went on and got an education.
Maryville became a pretty good basketball school during these years getting knocked out of sub state by oak ridge in 88-89 and making it to state in 91. They beat a Mark Newman led Sevier County in 1990 when they were #3 in the state. Won the Blount county tournament 3 years in a row over Alcoa. BTW John Olive was a horrible coach but became a legend at Tullahoma. Emory Hale was asked to move on after grabbing a player by the face mask during a game, the player was always whining and could never practice but was always ready Friday night

Yes. I am a huge Fulton fan and I think that they recruit, too. As do plenty of other teams.

I am a huge Maryville fan and I think Fulton recruits. Look at how A-E went down hill about same the time Fulton started winning...hmmmm

Maryville recruits but so does a lot of other teams....Maryville just does it better and puts more effort into making their school appealing to kids.

It's funny, I'm sure we used to know many of the same people. I played on the same team with Roderick Cross in biddy league ball at MHS way back when (Maroon team) and I'm familiar with some of those other names as well. I know Spears was on your state championship baseball team in '89. I think you had a really good pitcher named Kelvin Burns and a catcher name John Dalton back then as well. I played baseball against both of them. My best friend is getting married over New Year's in Vegas and we are staying at The Palazzo... I should buy you a Jager bomb!

Represent the Big Orange out there now!

Oh I'm always representin the Orange. Yea I know Rod pretty good, a police officer now. Kelvin was a good pitcher and John was a good catcher, grew up playing baseball with and against both of them. I was on the green team but had a couple of friends on the maroon team.
I may take you up on the drink I'll buy you one as well.

I graduated MHS in 1990...thanks for the reminder of how bad it was during my entire time there. 1989...wasn't that the 1st time William Blount ever beat Maryville?

It sure was... Only game I didn't attend in HS. I graduated in 90 too.... Hmmm

I'm sure you were friends with Scott Word (and the Heustess brothers Ed and Brad). He was our best player and his dad (Ralph) was the coach. He was a great guy and I played with a kid named Bernie Gladden who wasn't much of a basketball player on that maroon team but a very good baseball player who I also think was on your '89 championship team.
