Worked for a veterinarian several eons ago. Our deal was that I’d go after the cats and the Dobies and Rotties and GSDs, and he’d do the little dogs. It seemed like a very fair deal to me.
In my experience, little dogs are often bitey because, well, they’re little. They get sat on, tripped over, treated inappropriately as if they were human children, including being fed chocolate candy(!) by weirdo owners, dressed in bizarre outfits, and generally not treated like dogs. And nervousness seems frequently bred into them.
I’ve known some pretty chill little dogs (including dachshunds, and even one super-chill chihuahua

), but I’m overall prepared for them to be paranoid chompers. It’s generally not their fault. My lunatic cat of unknown but obviously abused background often reminds me of little dogs, sharing the belief that the best defense is a good offense. Chomp. I definitely let them know that they had stepped over the line, but I didn’t hurt them.
I’m sorry to hear of your daughter’s bite (and the pic, yikes!) I hope she heals quickly and completely.
