It's the offseason and I'm sure this has been touched on before but I was curious what everyone else thought.

Tennessee was Martins first big time coaching gig (I'm assuming he was never offered at another school that wasn't a mid major?) and this is all a business so what schools do you see Martin jumping ship for? He seems like a high character guy so unless it's massive amounts of money, he stays put but is Purdue pretty much the only other school he has ties with? I would imagine it would be very difficult to turn that one down.

Weird I was thinking about that the other morning while at work haha...

I would have previously thought Illinois would be a possibility, but we just found out this past off season he wasn't interested.

So I only see him leaving for Purdue possibly, or one of the "big timers". A duke, UNC, Kansas, Indiana type of gig.

Yup. For our sake (and what we believe to be a bright future), if a coaching change happens at Purdue, I hope it happens soon and they look for a more proven coach. I hate jumping the gun but you can almost tell Martin is headed for great things. I just hope people understand his hard work and give him time to be successful while embracing the Tennessee tradition so a decision like that is difficult to make.

Painters doing a hell of a job up there at purdue, I hope it continues.

I thought people were unhappy with Painter recently or he was thinking about retiring or something. Or maybe I just got Mizzou and Purdue mixed up when Anderson went to Arkansas because the media always throws in that Purdue connection because of Keady.

He played in NBA so I see that being an option. Purdue as already been mentioned and possibly if Missouri falls off under Haith once Mike Andersons players are all gone since he is from St. Louis. If Tom Izzo were to step aside in next few years then I could see if CCM has success here getting a job like Michigan State that he could not refuse an offer from.

ohh i remember now. He was linked to the Mizzou job because I think they talked to him and they were wondering who possible candidates could be.

Indeed. Someone playing in the Big10 and then coaching there would be tempting. I couldn't imagine a Michigan State team without Izzo. The best coach in modern times IMO.

Shouldn't we wait on this thread until Martin actually makes his first tournament?

Maybe but I feel okay jumping the gun on his future. The guy can obviously recruit (closing out is a wait and see game) and he can obviously coach. He's done 99% of everything right since he got here and I see no way he's not going to be successful. I really believe the guy hangs a national championship banner in TBA before he calls it quits.

Well seeing as how Illinois wanted him before he made the tourney, obviously not.

It was never shown that Martin was pursued by Illinois......there was a website saying Martin was interested in the Illinois job which had our fans riled up.

I am gaining more and more faith in coach Martin but all of these kind of threads remind me of the old Chicago bear skits on Saturday night live....

if coach Martin drove the team bus in the Indy 500, who would win....Is this a big coach Martin or a little coach Martin?...a little coach Martin......Coach Martin and Da Vols by a nose......LOL

The University of Illinois is soooo funny!!! I remember that they announced prior to any interviews that they were purposely seeking a minority coach.
Well, it all fell through and none of the qualified minority coach's were interested in the job, so they ended up hiring a white man.
It is funny because (1) They opened their mouth too soon (2) No qualified minority was interested in their crummy college. (3) Had a university announced that they were seeking to hire a white person, the whole media would have attacked that university, yet Illinois got a free pass from the media....
They are soooo stupid......

It's great Coach Martin made the league. 99.999% of us didn't or won't, but he just played 7 games. Can't imagine that is an overwhelming factor for kids or other schools. Maybe I'm wrong.

What he does as a coach will have way more to do with his marketability.

Maybe I'm naive, but cuonzo's shtick would lead me to believe that as long as he has the proper support from the university and the fan base, and his family is happy here, he'd rather be the coach at UT and win championships. Lead and build this program instead of being another in the long line of blue-blood coaches. He's a leader, not a follower. Duke was nothing before they had Coach K. If you preach the things cuonzo preaches, why not try to create your own legacy instead of following in the footsteps of another? That's the impression I have of Mr. Martin.

Yea I'm not saying he'd absolutely leave for those schools, I just think those are the only schools that he'd even consider.

As you said though, I could see him staying here for the long haul.

Let's all hope, well all of us except UTIE95

There is something very powerful to be said about building your own legacy, in your own way without being associated with history (other bluebloods) you had no part of developing.

I think it is important to realize what Tennessee has and not what it doesn't have as a University with the potential to be a true "blueblood" on the basketball court. It may take 1 big high exposure year (Final 4) to amp up recruiting to another level.

As long as Tennessee is competitive with compensation packages and assuming Tennessee and Martin deliver on the court this relationship could be permanent and should be permanent. This is Tennessee folks not some mid-major. Think like a National Champion and you will become 1. Vol's can do it in the men's game also. Maybe as soon as this year with a little March Madness luck.

Mizzou made a good run at Matt Painter, but Purdue kept him. I don't see Purdue opening up. I do think UCLA could open up if Howland doesn't get it going. That is a pretty big job.

I think CCM will stay at UT for a long time.
