Future OOC Matchups

There was a game against an above average Washington St. team in '94 and an average Texas Tech team in '97 that you left out. But your point stands, it wasn't exactly murderers row aside from the early 90's games with ND. I still don't see what you stand to gain by scheduling games that are almost certain losses at a time when you are struggling to get bowl eligible. Sure, there will be a lot of eyes on UT this fall when they play Oregon, but at the same time, a lot of eyes are going to see UT get humiliated. I don't know what good comes from that.

Ok if we take your tack...don't schedule future potential baddies...we'll call that the chickening route...but to dump an already scheduled, months away opponent"cause we be skeered" does WHAT for the program exactly?...flashbacks to us fleeing UNC when I was backing Dooley...brrr shudder

And you wonder why we have trouble recruiting top players to UT? Majors used a strong OOC schedule to build a national recruiting program and Fulmer continued it. Dickey believed in it. Great football players want to play the best. Fans want to see the traditional teams of college football. If your goal at UT is to beat UT Martin, South Alabama, Troy, and Austin Peay then you will always be a weak sister in the SEC. I did not hear very much excitement after we beat Troy last season. Why would we?

Look at the attendance in recent years. Outside of the conference, Oregon and UCLA have been our only sellouts. People are tired of UT pushing $65 tickets to play the sisters of the poor.

I'm not really advocating that we buy out of games that are already on the schedule. I'm just saying that going forward we should stop scheduling them because there are almost no benefits to playing these games and lots of downside. The point about Majors using a top notch OOC schedule to build the program is well taken. However, that was close to 30 years ago and the landscape has changed a great deal since then. At that time the only way to get on national TV and grow your brand was to play marquee OOC games. Now, with the new TV deal and the SEC Network on it's way, you're going to be on national TV every week as long as you're playing an FBS school.

As long as we honor already scheduled games I'm open to honest debate on future scheduling strategies
