'19 GA DE Nolan Smith

I want to believe we have a shot here.

BELIEVE, I do. Rumph wouldn't go if he didn't think we had a shot. We can believe regardless. It very well may not happen but we can believe it could happen :)

Many of these elite recruits have to realize they will be starting from day one if they come to TN. Nothing against the guys on the roster, we have some good ones, just not many elite ones.

GO VOLS!!!

Well, you could draw a comparison in college recruiting to the NFL draft. The principle is to bring in the best talent hungry to go after the golden ring.

Ditka and the Bears drafted quite well....The '83 draft was absolutely lights out for them... 6 of their first 8 draft picks were solid gold...I had to look it up, but they got Richard Dent in the 8th round--the 203rd pick of that draft. Just completely mind-boggling.

But more importantly, they got Covert, Thayer, and Bortz to anchor their OL. Ditka had to get HIS PLAYERS...

The same is TRUE for CJP. Those guys on here trashing CJP are just completely stupid. It's NOT surprising that a lot of CBJ's recruits laid down in games--they didn't commit to CJP or his process. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. I have no doubt that CJP and crew made every effort to lead this bunch to the water. We'll find out a few years down the line who were the quitters. It always seems to come out.

CJP knows what he is doing and what it takes from players to become champions.
He will/has shot it straight all along the way so far--with his players, us fans, and the media.

He will get his guys who will submit to his process and build a championship team.
Even CPF doesn't know what it takes to do that--he inherited CJM's players, but at least they believed in him and followed him (with a HUGE assist from Cutcliffe.

CJP's recruits will do the same.

That's my opinion....GO VOLS!
Of course it could also be said that Johnny Majors did not put together a very good team until Fulmer became the lead assistant and recruiter.

No, not really. We had good teams who were inconsistent all thru the 80s. Fulmer coached OL from '80--'88. He didn't become an Assistant HC and OC until '89.

Our '83 team was a good team who lost to Ole Miss...'85 team Sugar Vols...'87 team was VERY GOOD...'89 team, too.

The point that I was making was that the program was very "talent-poor" when Majors took over in '77. Simply stated--we were terrible!
MAJORS and crew did the heavy lifting in rebuilding the program....and had the cupboard well-stocked with competitive talent when Fulmer was promoted to OC/assist. HC in '89.

Fulmer's transition from OC/AHC to HC NEVER required him to build a program from nothing into Champions. And I'm not trying to minimize Fulmer's impact--but Cutcliffe joined MAJOR'S staff full-time in '83 and worked with Fulmer from then on. And we all know now the IMPACT Cutcliffe had all the time.

Simply stated, MAJORS had us knocking on the door and it even took Fulmer 5 years after taking over with excellent talent to get us a NC.

CJP and crew are starting at a place BELOW the talent Majors inherited back in '77. It's

AD Fulmer was also the Recruiting Coordinator under Majors from 1982-1988 before he was promoted in 1989. He was DEEPLY INVOLVED in stocking the cupboard in the 80's and beyond. A major part of building a program is recruiting top talent and he was "the guy" on that staff to make that happen. Unfortunately for Majors, he was not able to get us over the hump as well as know when to play his cards regarding his contract with AD Dickey at the time.

we all seem to forget that getting to a national championship caliber is very rare

Actually, it's a little easier to make the 4 team playoff for a chance at the NC now than it was back in the '90s.

The '95, '97, '98 UT teams would've been in the playoffs. And a case could've been made for the '99 team to be in the playoff as the 4th team, too.

The point being that the gap from Majors' teams to Fulmer's NC team wasn't very wide.

The '85 Vols brought Tennessee back to national prominence again, even if the '86 and '88 teams crapped the bed.
The 80's ended with us 11-1 but still not able to win the SEC championship.

Fulmer had a very small gap to close.

CJP has a Grand Canyon to cross.

And Nolan Smith is a Hoss who can help him cross it.

Doesn’t this settle the argument of whether we could visit Bailey or not?

Can you reconcile it to this?

Outdated.... they can take OV’s before the first day of class senior year now..... not sure how much if any of the other parts of that have changed or not
