'22 GA EDGE Joshua Josephs (Tennessee signee)

What edges (that played) did we lose from last season? We didn't lose anybody. I know the depth there is not ideal, but we also don't know how many of our DL have progressed. We won't know until the season starts. Every year there are guys that become stars that we don't anticipate. Tillman and Jackson last year for example. If they aren't ready, you don't burn a redshirt unless absolutely necessary. If I'm a 6'6" 330lb senior left tackle, I'm licking my chops if I look up and see one of those freshmen across from me.
Really think about what you just said :).
Think about their performance.
Now imagine if they had gotten 10 more plays to rest each game. Perhaps that equates into a whole other series of a defensive stop and the offense one more drive per game.
_ so your seniors are fresher and therefore perform better
_ your young guns aren't overwhelmed and they're developing much faster even making critical pressures late in games.

I'm not sure why you're agruing against numbers. Yeah we didn't lose anybody, now imagine if we had??
They 100 % will play. They have to. They absolutely need too...

If they aren't ready, you're giving 10 opportunities for a big play or touchdown for your opponent. Yes, one player can make that difference as well.

Let's be specific.

I'm saying they need to come in and rush the passer 10 times a game + special teams.
The rest of the veterans around would know this as well.
This isn't ILB. It's not CB or LT.
They used this same strategy with JRM back in 2014.

You would have us wear down our veterans.
I'm trying to rest them for 150 snaps over the course of the season and get the youngsters ready for 2023.

You putting us behind the ball Fulmer😁

Have to? Only if they are prepared to otherwise you hurt the team and potentially hurt the player in their potential growth

Following recruiting is fun. The issue is some that love recruiting get caught up every year with new players, so let me tell you about 10 snaps a game.
When a player arrives for their first college team meeting, all high school accolades are out the door. They got you to this point. Everybody in the room was a stud in high school. From your first workout, your first practice, your first team meeting... you are trying to move up from the bottom of the depth chart. That's the only spot that's guaranteed to you. 10 snaps a game. Everybody on the roster that doesn't start is fighting for those 10 snaps. If you only have 4 guys that are considered an edge, it doesn't matter. You have 9, 10, 11... that are a defensive end. Even more that are considered a linebacker. The guy sitting next to you has been busting his a$$ for 3 years to get those 10 snaps. So is the redshirt freshman next to him, and the senior walk on next to him. Those 10 snaps are earned, and there's a roster full of guys trying to earn them. You may be a 6'5" 230lb former 4* edge. Well, there's a 6'3" 270 Jr SDE that says he can bring it better than you for 10 snaps. He's 4th at his position on the depth chart because theirs 8 guys with that designation, but only 3 in the regular rotation. Guess what? What he puts on film everyday backs it up and he's ready for those 10 snaps a game. This is the reality of college football. If the freshmen are ready and give the team the best chance to win, then they will be out there. It won't be because they're an able body to give starters a breather for 10 snaps a game. Those 10 snaps can be the difference between an 8-4 season and a 10-2 season.

If they can't come in and simply "go get QB" - yeah i spoke like a caveman on purpose - then we probably shouldn't have recruited them.

This is us simply letting them use their 5 star 4 star ability without thinking on passing situations. They're not covering anyone. They're not fitting gap responsibility. They are there for 10 snaps over a game to create pressure and give our vets a rest.

Yes, they have to play.

More than likely I'm underselling it even. Because they will be the #2s off the jump.

Spot on.

Whos there to keep them from those 10 critical snaps? From what I can tell, nobody.

I mean Solon Page has been here since our last SEC Championship game, but I'm not about to throw him out on the edge just because he's been busting his butt. But who else would you put out there if not Josephs or Pearce?

Man, no that isn’t how it works! I was that high level recruit that went to a D1 school. Once they have u sign on the dotted line & you show up on campus everything that you once accomplished no longer matters. They want to see you perform, they aren’t handing u anything. So both these guys, Pearce and Joseph’s will have to show that they are able to perform and get to the QB. If that’s for 100 plays or for 10 plays. I hope they do because we definitely need a pass rush

I'm not at practice or inside the building, so I don't know. It could end up being somebody like Bryson Eason, Dominic Bailey, Amari McNeil, or hell even Austin Lewis. My point wasn't about playing some older, high effort guy because he's been around. You seem to think that if a kid can't give you 10 quality snaps a game as a true freshman outside of special teams, then he shouldn't have been recruited. It just doesn't work that way. I wish it was as simple as throwing a talented kid out there and saying "sick em", but it's not.

I think people think I'm knocking these kids. You've been there as well, so you understand and know exactly what I'm talking about. I guess it's one of those things in life that you can't fully understand unless you've experienced it yourself, and that's not a knock on anybody here.

I think the biggest thing is that there is literally no one in front of them stopping them from contributing early. I mean what other edge guys are there. If Pearce and Joseph’s were DL, then I would totally understand, A lot more guys there. Pearce and Joseph’s are the second and third best pass rushers on the team imo and I’m excluding Harrison because he’s more of a tweener. With as many plays that the defense is on the field i fully expect Pearce to come in on third downs and do damage this year. He’s a freak athlete

I don't know if you've seen, but Harrison was up to 245 heading into summer workouts. I seriously doubt that either is close to Harrison (as a player) entering fall camp. If they are, get ready for a fun season.

I saw. I’m hoping he breaks out this year. I just don’t think his length is a real problem for OT’s, hence why I called him a tweener

VQ is predicting he'll have the biggest impact on defense of all of the 2022 commits.

Someone asked why he over Pearce,
I think Josephs is a little more polished fundamentally and is a little bit ahead strength wise.

Some rando added this bit...take with a grade of slaw, but it was too optimistic not to post:
Cause he’s an absolute freakshow. Kid is ready, has put on some weight and his hands and feet are some of the best folks in GA have ever seen in HS. Dude was defensive player of the year in 7A for a reason. Kid has natural rush skills, esp with that crazy wingspan and his hands. Then, he’s also athletic enough to drop and play coverage and flow to the ball across the second level.

Also forgot he was rated a 93 on 247 👀

Edit: and a 96 on On3 👀

This kid would be ~top 100 if not for the jackass sites of Rivals and ESPN.

He's looking more and more like a huge steal.

Absolutely a steal, imo. Kid is twitchy athletic and really physical. Film is really impressive.

Watching our defense last year on the sec network, I would guess every recruit has a good opportunity to play several snaps per game this year. We were God awful last year. It better improve or we are looking at a similar record, or worse. Hoping for better performance from the players and coaches.

But but it's too hArD for him to contribute and he needs to redshirt 😏
