'20 GA QB Harrison Bailey (UT SIGNEE)

1. HARRISON BAILEY, TENNESSEE COMMIT

otgfnpq7urk3esxiijrl

This was the third year in a row that Bailey competed in the Five-Star Challenge and he saved his best performance for last. The ball flew off his hands during one-on-ones and Bailey took the reins during the 7-on-7 tournament, calling plays for his team and leading them all the way to the championship game. Bailey thrives in a 7-on-7 environment, but what impressed most was his confidence and swagger as he directed his team. Bailey was the clear alpha of the quarterback group.

Like Clemson? When did they last bring in two QB studs in the SAME CLASS? And they were still hurting when Lawrence got knocked out of the Syracuse game, due to Kelly Bryant transferring that week. What’s tOSU’s depth chart looking like? They’re a program that would sign a 4 star along with a Tate Martell while they waited for JT Barrett’s decade of eligibility to be exhausted. Bama took Tua Jr and the Bear’s grandbaby this past class...really no choice since everybody transferred. Just sayin this as a counter for the thinking that this would help DEPTH. If pins and needles every time our QB gets sacked lends us CHAMPIONSHIP MENTALITY? Go Vols.

So exactly how many franchise QBs do we have on the roster? Do you think Bama or UGA or Clemson would hesitate to take 2 to get back to a level they want to be? And I would be careful with tOSU reference. As I recall they won the NC with their 3rd string guy. Can only do that if your 3rd guy is good enough.

Clemson doesn't have to take 2 studs in 2020 class because they take one every year and always have a couple on hand even if one or two transfer. UT is playing catch up which is why it makes sense to take 2 in 2020.

New OC, JG graduates this year, Shrout likely transfers when he realizes he's not going to play...need 2 QB's in 2020 class. And if you're building a championship program and serious about winning why not bring in two studs and let them compete for the job? What if next fall JG and Shrout are gone and Maurer or Bailey get hurt? Wouldn't it be nice to have King on the roster?
If you think Maurer sticks around. You still haven’t shown me one example where loading up in one class gave a team depth. Yeah, Clemson takes ONE every class and they were down to a long forgotten backup pulling a miracle against Syracuse...where was Hunter? If JG isn’t back next season and Shrout leaves, then what do you think the two on the losing end of the starting battle do with the rest of their ticking eligibility? Ideally they stick around and try to win the job back. We’ve seen how ideals have weathered this generation.

I think JG is a RS Junior so he will be eligible next year too if he doesn't turn pro after this year.

Thanks for your tOSU point. They took 3 star Cardale Jones and he delivered in a short sample...what if they had NEEDED another stud in that class? I’m sure UGA would have accepted both Lawrence and Fields in the same class...then they’d have both to back up Fromm. 😉

It's moot. We don't get to choose and our opinion amounts to nothing. If the coaches wanna take 2, they will. If only they understood the minefield of recruiting. Suggest you inform them.

"He is clearly the best quarterback and would be worthy of that elusive fifth star if he weren't committed to Tennessee were an inch or two taller."

Where have I indicated otherwise? Thought you understood the power limits of individuals on a message board? 🤨 This is merely a preference in strategies conversation. The only thing I like about it is that Chaney was enabled to go after his guys...eliminating the micromanaging conspiracy theories that tend to evolve around Pruitt.

I’d rather have Bailey than King.
I’d rather have both. Bailey is an elite pocket passer, if everything is in place as far as Oline, offensive weapons, etc, he’s going to be fun to watch and would be who I would prefer to win out. King strikes me as a kid that can really stress the defense though as well and give you a lot of threat with his athleticism. Both of these kids are great qbs, I hope to land both and watch all the offensive players that jump into the boat to play with them.

If JG leaves and Shrout leaves i would rather they take in a grad trasfer with HB than 2 true freshmen

Setting the Stage for The Elite 11 Finals...

For the first time ever, The Opening Finals will be missing a five-star quarterback. Clemson commit DJ Uiagalelei has opted not to participate and while that won’t hurt his standing in the national rankings, it certainly opens the door for some of the other names of note to make a run at the top spot.

THE LEAD PACK

Heading into the event, 247Sports has two attendees ranked inside our top 32 players for the class of 2020: USC commit Bryce Young out of California and uncommitted Haynes King out of Texas. If you're placing bets, those are the guys we’re riding right now as the most likely future first rounders. Both are athletic, both are state champions, both are incredibly productive and efficient. King, who has visited Duke, Auburn, Tennessee and Texas A&M this summer, is the bigger, higher-upside prospect while Young is riding the success of Kyler Murray as another undersized but talented quarterback that has the look of an elite talent.

Both Young and King sit outside the five-star realm heading into the event but because of their current rank and their validation on the field in pads, both could earn that fifth star with a knock-out performance in Texas.

KEEPING PACE

Behind Young and King is a group of prospects that have been in the lead pack since the initial class of 2020 rankings. Tennessee commit Harrison Bailey has been extremely productive as a thrower but it’s his feet, and not his arm, that need further vetting. Ohio State commit Jack Miller was considered potentially the top quarterback in the country after his freshman season. He's since been jumped, but remains in the discussion. Texas commit Hudson Card, a former wide receiver, will be one of the better movers in Texas where he’ll attempt to show he has the arm talent of the other elite passers. Georgia commit Carson Beck and South Carolina commit Luke Doty both emerged as juniors with huge seasons. Doty may be the most athletic quarterback in the country so any way he can further elevate himself as a passer only adds to his value. Beck, coming off of his first full year as a starter, will have a chance to shed some more light on what appears to be a steep trajectory.
