All rivals rankings. That is the team that just went 2-0 vs SEC this season. Probably would have won the East. Who can explain this?

Paul Johnson gets more out of less talent than any coach around! In an option offense you don't need as many highly ranked linemen, running backs, quarterbacks or recievers. The fly in the ointment is defenses aren't great a lot of the time.

Coaching. Developing players regardless of star rating. Their offense. It's hard to game plan for. When it's clicking on all cylinders it's almost impossible to stop.

His system is designed to take those 'marginal' athletes and win by controlling the ball and wearing your defense down. It's hard to stop when you don't see it regularly. It is old school smash mouth 3 yards and a cloud of dust old fashioned football. I love it and you can't stop it.

Its mostly system and coaching....Having said that, to me it shows just what a fine line separates these recruits....I too get excited when we sign 5*'s and I do think for the most part there is a direct correlation between high rated classes and wins/championships....but when the fat boils away its still about two a days and long sessions in the weigh room and film study room....and systems and coaching....

The most underrated thing about Johnson is his in game adjustments. He really just sees how you play him and then does the thing that you are least prepared for or where you have the least advantage. He used msu speed against them all night and consistently got them out of position. If he ever gets an elite defense dear god.

They also lost to Duke and North Carolina. Calm down.

GT's troubles are when they turn the ball over. That pretty much caused their losses to Duke and UNC.

That and they're no good playing from behind. The offense severely limits what they can do in 2 minute drill.

Very few colleges run that offense any more but a bunch of high schools do so he gets to choose from a very large talent pool without many competitors.

Recruiting isn't the be all end all. Coaching and player development are still big components of the game.

Bill Snyder is an obvious example.

Johnson was 1 and 5 in bowl games until tonight. Most times when teams have several weeks to prepare they defend it pretty well. Not tonight.

Guessing schools that don't rank in the top 10, lose players to the draft less often.
A group of fully grown and experienced Srs and Jrs... well, it's a benefit.
This is not taking away from coaching though, nice job at GT.

Motivation and a unique offense with a very good QB go a long way in college football.

They also lost to a 7 loss UNC team. Who can explain this?

Msu has been playing awful for a month or more. Ga should have won the game had it not been for Richt being Richt. That offense will make you look bad if your dc doesn't understand how to practice against it, or make adjustments in the game. I think the msu dc leaving didn't help the preparation, not to mention adjustments. But I do commend ga tech, they looked well prepared and have several great athletes.

Reminds me of that year Wake Forest went 10-2 or so. Ton of 5yr Srs and upperclassmen. Not to say GT is traditionally as week as WF btw.
