Tennessee has liked Means for a while. He ran a 4.4-second 40 at around 205-210 pounds at one of the Vols’ camps in June, and they hosted him again for their cookout in late July. They kept recruiting him, and WRs coach David Johnson stayed on him even after he committed to North Carolina in early November. It was pretty clear that Tennessee was going to continue recruiting him all the way to signing day no matter what, just in case the Vols had a spot for him. And I think they brought him in on an official visit last weekend because they knew there was a scenario in which they would sign him this month.
In short, they’re pretty high on him. This isn’t a guy they pulled out of left field last week to bring him in on an official visit. This is a guy they’ve evaluated in person, recruited for six months and been honest with him from the start about how he might fit into their plans, and it worked out for him to be part of Tennessee’s class.
