'24 GA WR Mike Matthews (Tennessee)

Gotta close on Matthews, Franklin, Bennett, Bates, and Spillman. Anyone else we land past that (Russell, Singleton, Cole, Jefferson, Okoye, and Ross) are just bonuses

What if we don’t close them all? Also we’ve missed you over in the Satterwhitw thread for some reason.

Then this class will have been a disappointment. At the moment our highest rated player in this class very likely may never play a meaningful down at Tennessee. I’m glad we landed Sat and it’s a huge pickup, but we need some tackles. IOL has never been a concern. We’ve done good there the last 2 years. The tackle position is a completely different story though

I'll be honest though something seems odd about Braylon only being worth 5 points in their system a highly rated 4 star
They take like the 15 or 20 highest rated players and weight them into an average. So Braylon Staley taking the whole average up 5 points is huge.

An easy way to look at it is that a 1.000 rated 5 star is worth 40 points, if your next highest rated guy is a .95 4 star then it's 38 * .95 = 36 points, the third guy is 36 * .90 is 32.4 points all the way down.

I don't know the exact weight they use, but Braylon Staley basically bumped everyone below him down a spot.

That is very confusing lol

Merklinger will play meaningful down in 2024.

You're way off about him

Why do you continue to refer to Bennett Warren by his first name and everyone else by their last name? Just curious.
Bennett just doesn’t sound like a first name. So I get it mixed up from time to time since he has 2 last names. People did a similar thing with Conyer last year by constantly adding an s to his last name

Ok bro, just keep pretending that we’re going to catch up Georgia when they continue to sign talent that’s in a completely different category than us because you think we develop talent better than the program that has had 25 players drafted in the last 2 years. Is it the end of the world if we can’t sign top 5 classes year after year? No, but I want to start winning SEC and National Championships, and that’s simply not going to happen if we don’t recruit at the level that Georgia, Ohio State, and Bama do consistently. A top 10 class should be the floor going forward. With at least 1 top 3-5 class every 4 years. Right now South Carolina has a better class than ours, and Florida (who is in a similar situation that we were during the start of the dark ages we just left) is killing it in recruiting too. If calling things how I see it makes me a joke then so be it I guess
To recruit at the level of GA, Ohio State, and Bama who have sustained success year after year, you actually have to have sustained success. We had 1 good year. Expecting us to compete with those classes is just dumb. I dont get why that's so hard to understand?

Yes sounding the alarm about our "issues" in recruiting in July, going into year three of a total rebuild, IS A FREAKING JOKE.

And you and hundreds of mouth breathers just keep repeating "we gotta recruit like UGA and Bama" "we gotta get better recruits"

For one thing DUH

Second of all, Heupel has done nothing but improve our recruiting since he got here. Like how can you possibly expect us to recruit better than everybody already? That's delusional. There isn't a coach on the planet that could be doing much better unless Kirby or Nick Saban inexplicably jumped ship to coach us and moved everyone of their Bama/UGA recruits.

Not to mention Ohio State.

How can you not put things in perspective? Why would you think since we aren't recruiting top 3 talent RIGHT NOW that we won't ever?

Somehow going from the 21st class in 2021 to having a top 10/7ish class in 2023 gives you no reason to think that we will continue to recruit better? How?

You're way off about him

I agree. He's not going to beat out Nico I wouldn't think (Nico is a phenom), but Merklinger really reminds me of Hendon Hooker in the way he throws the ball, and his pocket presence as well. Just watch him play. I think if Merklinger is patient, JH and company will put him in the NFL. The kid is really talented. Merklinger has all the ability to take us to the playoffs in the future and win a ton of games for us.

Right. We have improved out recruiting every year under JH. We also landed some great ones out of the portal and that shouldn't be overlooked. This year, we have a 3.75 star average per player according to Rivals. That puts us top 5 in the SEC in that category as of right now, and we will likely land a couple of 5 stars, and a few more 4 stars at least to pad that even further. That is absolutely huge. If you want to compete for championships then you have to average at least 3.4 or 3.5 stars per player on average every year. JH is doing that. Not sure if we could ask for more at this point.

Also, JH can flat out coach. I would take his coaching ability and scheme over anyone else in the SEC He and his staff can also develop players. I think it was Will West that said on the radio recently that JH had taken "scrap heap guys" (Tillman and Hooker for example) and turned them into super stars. That is a sign that this guy absolutely knows what he is doing.

You can’t have enough talented qb’s. Heup is too caught up in rankings. We have several quality 4 stars at this point who know’s which will be best, that’s splitting hairs. They key is do we have the coaches that can coach em up. I think we do, I do think Martinez is on the clock to coach his group up. I think overall we have a great group of coaches that can coach players up. I also think Martinez does have some good qualities and I won’t write him off yet. But he does have more to work with now so we do not need to underachieve there. He was the only one that didn’t get a raise or extension. But hey by this time next year he may have a big one. Recruiting is going well, we are on pace for 2 solid top 10 classes in a row. This one has a chance to approach top 5 if things land just right. Keep winning and recruiting will continue to rise. Nobody gets to the top instantly. But hey we went 11-2 last year and we have gotten better ever since Heupel and staff have stepped on campus. GBO!!!!

Yeah I mean we had the 19th ranked roster and beat Bama who had the 1st ranked roster. Basically all you need to know.

A top 10 roster gives you significantly more talent than Heup had last year, you know the offense is great and if you add a great QB to that mix you are going to be very difficult to beat.

Lol imagine if we had Caleb Williams. People would be picking us to win it all this year.

This class will end up being a very good class overall . . . But will be lucky to be 4th or 5th rated class in the SEC (Bama / UGA / LSU / Texas AM etc.).
Us lsu and Texas A&M will be so close it won’t matter tho. We just need a few good seasons to be up there with Georgia and Alabama, their classes are steps above the leve below and I think Tenn has moved up to that second tier in the sec.

And these ranking aren’t a perfect science. Anywhere from 4-8 in rankings the difference is very small and highly subjective. The bigger importance of the top 10 teams is who gets coached up and gets better and who doesn’t. Show me 4 years later what the real rankings are compared to what they were when they committed. Sure the top 2 or 3 are probably going to be up there. But I bet the 4-10 isn’t exactly the same.GBO

I feel the same, after Georgia, and Alabama it’s LSU, Texas A&M, Florida and the Vols. This year I really feel like we’ve jumped into this tier and all these teams are so close it really matters about the coaching and what’s happening at the next level. After that the talent falls off. I would say theirs 3 tiers in the sec , the top, the contenders , and the pretenders in recruiting.
