By and large, Butch was pretty darn good at bringing in highly rated classes.
His efforts in recruiting to needs left a lot to be desired.
His ability to retain those he recruited was abysmal.
His recruiting fell off a cliff after the 2015 class. Very odd considering all the hype surrounding the 2016 team and how the season started out for them. I think there was a real effort issue in recruiting starting in the spring of 2016 when it came to the coaching staff.

It became evident really quick what some of them were being sold to come here wasn't ever going to happen. And in some cases no effort was ever made to. When that happens word spreads quick.
I believe Butch gave us a bunch of 4 star guys that werent takes at other SEC schools. In other words, we got the guys that the big schools flirted with but never offered. I believe those higher ranked classes had a lot of fools gold in them.
WHO: 4-star WR Ramel Keyton
TO WHOM: Vols
THE REASON: He says a decision is coming in May. Don't think AU will be ready to take him at that time. Pursuing a few other WRs harder. With him down to AU and UT, Vols are the more likely destination at this time.
STOCK RISING
WR Ramel Keyton, Marietta, Ga.
Keyton, a four-star prospect, returned to Tennessee on Saturday for the Vols spring game, making his second trip to Knoxville in the past two months and his sixth since September 2016. He has been high on the Vols for months, and he admitted Sunday to 247Sports Keith Niebuhr that Tennessee and Auburn are his top two as he moves closer to a decision. Hes currently planning to announce his choice sometime in May, and sources have indicated that the Vols now are in the drivers seat to land him. Auburn, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Miami and Penn State are the other teams in the running.
Keyton, a four-star wide receiver from Marietta (Ga.) High School, visited Tennessee again April 21 to attend its spring game, returning to Knoxville for the second time in less than two months. He admitted after the visit that the Vols were one of the top two teams he's considering, along with Auburn. Tennessee has hosted Keyton on a half-dozen visits since September 2016 and has been widely viewed as a strong contender for him over the past few months, and all signs currently point to the Vols having the upper hand, with Ohio State, Miami, Penn State and Ole Miss also in the mix in addition to Auburn. The 247Sports Crystal Ball also points to Tennessee as the favorite.
