Gaffin with a fracture

What I have seen of Bush thus far makes me think she may never be ready to pitch at this level and may get recruited over in the next couple years. I guess Ralph will move everyone up a slot and put McClain in the ninth spot. She is a great fielder with an awesome arm but not going to give us much with the bat. I think Moss will start and Erin will be ready if she gets in trouble. If we get a big lead we may try Bush late other than that looks like we'll go with two pitchers.

What has happened to Bush?

Is it control problems or is she injured?

Red shirt?

Mostly control, throwing strikes, and getting batters out. Bush has faced 58 batters, given up 14 walks and 14 hits. That means half the time the batter gets on base.

Laura Rutledge for the SECN reported during the Florida-Ole Miss game that Gaffin was out for the SEC tournament and would be re-evaluated in Knoxville.

A little late with my thanks, but, I had to check your stats...:)

GO LADY VOLS!

Have some faith man!!! This team is talented! Rainey will still be around and will become a vocal leader for this team! She probably still has the ability to pinch run but her voice will help carry this team back to the WCWS this team has a new drive and will play for Rainey

Believe me I'm trying to stay as positive/optimistic as I can but I'm also realistic, you know. At this point reaching the WCWS seems like a remote possibility. I'll be pleasantly surprised (and leap for joy) if that happens.

This team just hasn't played well on the road all season and losing Gaffin even makes the task that much tougher. Lately, we had good road series against GA (2-1) and Ole Miss (2-1), but the level of competition we'll be facing in the super regional will be a bit higher and more difficult to overcome. But hey, if we get someone that our batters can handle, then we'll have a decent shot. Hope for the best.

Could you care to share what you have seen of Bush??

In her lack of innings pitched she has shown a lack of control a walk per inning. She isn't a power pitcher by any means so not having control and being able to hit spots with strikes makes her very average at this point. She has allowed one of two batters faced to reach base for a .500 on base percentage against her by opponents.
I hope she can make it at this level next season seems to be do or die for her.

It's all about pitching matchups. I was very encouraged with Matty Moss's pitching yesterday against LSU. With the exception of two pitches, she pitched a very strong game. If this team can get a favorable pitching matchup in the regionals and super regionals, they just might get to the World Series. It's a longshot, but it's not out of the question.

Per WBIR report, Gaffin is ruled out for NCAA regional this weekend and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. I'm not an orthopedic physician, but it looked to me as though Gaffin suffered a substantial injury, and I personally don't anticipate Gaffin's return at all. I suspect it will take at least another month or two for her wrist to heal...

Which approach should the coaches/players take? 1) Let's wait and see if Gaffin can return and contribute OR 2) Gaffin is not coming back, Next Man Up, everyone step up and pick up the slack and get the job done with a collective effort? I personally hope that Gaffin's injury won't serve as any sort of distraction for the players, but the coaches/players will use it as a platform for extra motivation and source of encouragement just like Auburn did with their turtle's injury, and I believe they will...

The Gaffin injury no doubt took the wind out of their sails in the SECT. I think they've had time to get over that now. I expect them to play with a lot of fire & emotion in the NCAA regionals.

Gaffin will be in that dugout rooting them on & supporting them. I expect all of them to give their all. That includes pinch hitters & position replacements. We need Gabriel & Moss to be at their absolute best above & beyond everybody else though.

These 2 pitching will either lead us to the supers or allow us to be knocked out. We will need some hitting at some point but Erin & Matty just need to pitch lights out for us to advance.

I think we will go with the lineup that we used during the tournament and start Erin.

Probably so, but I would personally revert back to Overstreet at catcher. Geer at 3B. Start C.J. McClain in CF. Vines in RF. Geathers in LF. Aucoin at 1B. Keep the rest where they've started all season. That's just me though. I just think Lockman would be better coming off the bench and /or being used as a pinch hitter.

Nothing wrong with splitting time with Aucoin at 1B by bringing in Lockman in the later innings say 4th or 5th inning. This way she could get at least 1 AB in per game too. Aucoin hasn't been hitting that well so that's the only reason that I would even do that.

so no official word on how bad Gaffing is hurt ? and yes,I know there probably won't be anything from the Vols until the season is over

but it would be great to see her back on the Field,to close out her Senior year with the Lady Vols

Watched Ralph Weekly's recent interview and he seemed to be okay with an idea of going with just two pitchers, Erin & Matty in the NCAA tournament. Ralph said that the team won't miss Gaffin's pitching in the circle as much as her hitting in the batter's box & her leadership on the field, and I completely agree with that assessment. What's new? i seriously doubt we'll see Bria Bush in the circle for the remainder of the season. Ralph sounded as if Bush is making a progress but I doubt the validity of it. If we're gonna have a third pitcher at all, then it will be Gretchen Aucoin I think, and when that happens, then it can only mean one of the two things; either we're way up or we're way down..

Just like the rest of you, I'm not sure what exactly is going on/wrong with Bush; has her reported pre-existing injury dating from high school days slowed down her development in her rookie year (seems to be a poor/unsatisfactory excuse/explanation from what I've been able to observe) or was she never an elite (?) pitcher that we were widely led to believe? She was certainly advertised/hyped to be (much) better than what she has shown so far with some fanfare before her arrival at Rocky Top. At this point, I tend to think the latter is the case; as someone (I forgot his name) expressed on the other thread, I'm afraid that Bush's days at UT are numbered and she'll get recruited over in the next couple years. Unless Bush's pitching does an amazing 180-degree turn next year, my fingers crossed, we probably won't see her here anymore. That'll be pretty unfortunate b/c she seems to be a really sweet person, and UT has been her dream school since she was 8 years old. But we'll move on.

I like the lineup we used against LSU in the SECT, and expect Erin to pitch against Marist. We'll save Moss for AZ/OH St. Darn it, we'll surely miss Gaffin in the 6th spot. She had a hot bat too before the freak injury happened. Why couldn't that cursed pitch hit her anywhere else but there??

Good Luck to Rainy and hopefully the Lady Vols will keep winning and advancing into the NCAA Tournament.

Melissa broke her hand in 2013 playing the last weekend of the season against Missouri in 2013... she missed the SEC Tournament, Regional and the Super Regional but made it back and played in the WCWS and even had a few hits... she reached base 4 of 5 times against Ricketts in the 12 inning Marathon game...

Not so much an issue going through airports as a there is with a big nasty scar... Mel worked hard to make it back to be able to play... she needed her teammates to keep winning and advancing.... Melissa had to relearn how to hold a bat and when she finally made it to Oklahoma... her first practice ... she hit a few bombs out of the stadium.

Melissa had to overcome a lot... a torn patella tendon on her left knee, 2 shoulder surgeries and a hand surgery... She would have had a very special career at UT if she could have avoided the injuries..

Melissa spent the 2015 softball season with the Fresno State Bulldogs as a director of operations. It was an administrative job. The pay wasn't great so she decided to go back to school to get a teaching degree and look into possibly coaching locally. She has had a lot of requests for lessons and to speak to youth groups about her softball experiences.

Melissa was a very good player at UT despite all the injuries she suffered, and we appreciate everything she'd done for the program. She's a great ambassador for our university. We wish her the very best going forward. She'll be successful in whatever she chooses to do.
