Game clock

I read the article.

Read it more closely in particular this line.

"The game clock can only be stopped by an official's whistle, according to Tim Reese, the arena manager."

Who restarted and why, who knows but that is really moot since the foul was called with 0.2 seconds witnessed by the clock stopping at 0.2 seconds.

I understand that's what they say. I'm just interested to hear the sound of a whistle at .2

Because based on acoustics, when you blow one of those whistles, it makes a sound. And quite a loud one if you hear the sound after the time reads 0:00.

I wonder if they would also say that the only way to start the clock is with the belt clip as well. Because it magicly started again too.

People can "Say" lots of things. Whistles make sound. And it's not a muffled sound.

When I bought my oven it was estimated to last 10 years, yet it blew up after a year. A malfunction perhaps? No way!

Rutgers can complain all they want to, but if the tables had been turned, they'd have jumped and screamed and celebrated and argued that those 0.2 seconds were legit. The TV announcers need to learn to keep their personal bias out of the sideline commentary. THEY are as much to blame for the "controversy" as anybody.

1. I doubt any of us can pretend to know exactly how the system works. We're told that the only way for the clock to stop is for a whistle to be blown; that seems like something that could be easily proven or disproven. The officials are not Tennessee people, including the one sitting at the clock on the bench. They saw the same replays everybody else did. Either the clocked stopped (and then started again) because of something one of them did, or it didn't; if there was a malfunction, they should have noticed it. If you're convinced that something was fishy, blame the officials. Not Tennessee.

2. When you watch the slow-motion replay, it's obvious that the foul is occurring with 0.2 seconds on the clock. Whether the all-important whistle was being blown at that exact moment or not is unknown, but the referee who blew the whistle got a chance to review the play in exacting detail. Presumably she knows when she blew the whistle. Again, if you think something is fishy, blame the referees.

3. If the Rutgers player had not committed an incredibly stupid foul as the ball was on the way down from the rim with less than half a second to play, it wouldn't be an issue.

4. As a poster points out above, it doesn't matter anyway. This game is meaningless. Both teams will play deep into the tournament; there's a good chance both will be #1 seeds.

5. If all the major conferences use a system where a clock stoppage is tied solely to a referee's whistle, then it's inexcusable for the announcers not to have mentioned that on the air last night.

Stolen from the Vols forum posted by Stunna N Orange but I thought the people reading this thread should see it!

Four other fair points aside, this is absolutely the truth.
If things are as we are being told they are, then those knuckleheads should be well enough informed to know it. Instead of carrying on as if such were not the case.

Fine point Vercy...

See the ESPN article at this link: ESPN - Stringer devastated, awaiting explanation after controversial finish - Women's College Basketball
It seems that all big time schools have a time/clock system with a wireless interface with the referee's whistles. That would seem to totally rule out anyone stopping the clock for a micro-second to help UT. That's the facts gang. Also, how would this conspirator know how long to stop the clock- Nicki had not gotten her rebound when the clock paused at .02. Unfortunate for Rutgers, but the best team really did win this one.

How do you figure? Rutgers overcame an 11 point halftime deficit and hit a shot in the closing seconds and made a big defensive stand at the end. They fought hard and deserved to win that one.

The only thing that matters is that the clock stops at 0.2 AND THEN starts again over a second later. SOMEONE PURPOSELY STOPPED THE CLOCK AND THEN RESTARTED IT. THERE IS NO OTHER EXPLANATION.

Shame on the refs. Heads should roll after this game. Not Tenn's fault at all, but the entire officiating team and whoever was working the clock should be finished after this game - finished as in career over.

You can watch it for yourself here:

YouTube - Rutgers Womens Basketball Travesty

This isn't Tenn's fault, but Pat Summit is an absolute MORON for not knowing about a clock problem. She needs to face reality.

It's just an absolutely travesty. There are no words to describe it. Shame on society.

There is no possible way to defend the refs/time keeper. None. The clock stopped. Maybe if it stopped and didn't just inexplicably start going again there could be a whistle blown. But there is no argument here. The clock just restarted itself. Someone purposely stopped the clock for one second, restarted it, and Rutgers was screwed yet again.

Tennessee has gotten its second loss of the season, Rutgers has beaten another #1 team in a week, and that's the end of the story, period, end of discussion.

If I was a voter in the AP/Coaches, I would definitley take into consideration that they really won this game. They should be 4-5th in the latest rankings

They're fourth. Anyway, what do you expect Pat Summit to do, go "Oh yeah, we lost....but we'll take it." News Flash: It's not her fault. She doesn't control the clock. She doesn't control the Ref's actions. I don't understand the notion behind blaming Tennessee's coaches, fans, players, or anything. It is the REFS!!!

By the way Skip Bayless is a complete tool and if he were to get run over by a bus, the world would be a better place.

You can think what I wrote is all wrong all you want, but you know it's the truth. Tennessee was handed the game by the referees, plain and simple.

And this isn't one of those times where an obsessed fan will say that on a questionable call. I don't even go to school in New Jersey. This is PURE FACT: Tennessee was handed the game by the referees.

What angers me the most is that there are still people like you who insist on supporting the call. No person with eyes and a brain can deny the truth.

It's fact cause you say so? That's funny. In your other post you took a swipe at CPS which is just ridiculous. She has no control over the clocks.

You also said "shame on society". It's a game played by college students. It really means nothing more.

Careful with those sour grapes. You wouldn't want to choke like Rutgers did.

Dude, we BELIEVE you, we REALLLY do. :eek:lol:

This is PURE FACT: Tennessee was handed the game by the referees.

I personally think God gave them the game myself. And THAT is PURE fact!

What angers me the most is that there are still people like you who insist on supporting the call. No person with eyes and a brain can deny the truth.

I have both eyes and a brain and I support the call. If that angers you, well I guess you just need anger management counselling for getting so upset over a G..A..M..E.

I have no problem with CPS. She is one of the greatest coaches in the history of basketball, men or women. The clock problem was not her fault. But she did say something along the lines of "I was not aware of a clock problem" and to me this is ignorance.

This game should be investigated by the NCAA and whoever was working the clock should be held responsible for this travesty.

I provided my old e-mail address, but if you'd like I can provide you with my school e-mail (a university in PA) to prove I have no affiliation whatsoever with Rutgers.

"I have both eyes and a brain and I support the call."

:eek:lol: Love it. Your ignorance has me laughing on the floor.
