Game Summary (Memphis - 11/22)

Another great losing effort. Its great to lose as a TN VOl.
We'll see if this team will win 19 games and beat some top teams like last years team did.

You seem to forget that this is not last year's team. Four new starters, most of whom played little to none last year. Your hero would have been blown out in both games in the tournament with this year's team. If you are impressed with the start this year, you can't be impressed and just continue to look for ways to criticize our new coach. Get over the past and support our current players and coaching staff.

Have to mention lack of any coaching happening with that Memphis squad. They don't defend or rebound and both require coaching apart from rah rah AAU style horse shiz.

Gimme a break man. You're giving Pastner absolutely no credit for our offensive scheme in the first half. Sure we shot well from outside, but Will Barton was also scoring at will on the interior. If not for the big first half lead, UT would've won in regulation.

We didn't rebound, at all. For all the "athletes" that Memphis has, we have no one that can guard and rebound at the 4 position. It showed vs. Belmont, Michigan and was extremely evident in the way Maymon played yesterday. When Black and Simpson fouled out in regulation, I thought Memphis was destined to lose for sure.

As for defense, Pastner had our guys playing very well, especially on the perimeter. The only glaring hole was the defensive boards, and it was a killer. How many of UT's baskets came on puts backs in the final 15 minutes?

Pastner did a good job of juggling his lineups at the end of the games and putting Memphis in a position to win. Not a good overall came by the coach, as he let UT creep back in, but we didn't lose despite the foul trouble and rebounding hole.

Though highly entertaining, the fouls made this a very unusual game. Memphis lost its two big guys for basically the final 8 minutes of regulation and both overtimes and had trouble offensively when it had to play small (much like it did against Michigan without a post presence). Maymon had a great game, but almost all of his points came from offensive rebounds and free throws. Basically, the circumstances that created the way the game was played are unlikely to be replicated in the future.

Memphis was clearly better for 34 minutes and did almost everything possible to give it away. But once the game got to overtime, it was Tennessee's to lose and they lost it. I don't think either coach did a great job managing the situations. Both teams will be different when they play again in January.

For the way this game went as stated above, and the fact the Jan game is in Memphis I just don't think we will have much of a shot. When looking at the rest of our schedule I have that game as a loss. I would put it in the same category as at KY,Vandy, and Florida. Doesn't mean I don't think this team will do special things but winning on the road is very tough.

Ferrakohn Hall, 6'8" F, will be eligible to play for the Tigers when we play the Vols again in January. I assume that he'll draw the task of keeping Maymon off the offensive boards. I think he assumes the same:

I have a feeling this will turn out like the time Joey Dorsey called out Greg Oden before the Elite 8 game in 2007.

Memphis has great quickness and is very athletic. They do as good a job of creating transition baskets off defensive rebounds as anyone in the country. If TN doesn't play Memphis style basketball the first half, we probably win by 10-12 points. As for Pastner, he is a great recruiter. He is not a great X and O guy, but will be very successful at Memphis. Her is a young coach who will improve in this area as he gets more experience. He has so much talent, he can't help but have a good team. I would think most Memphis fans are very pleased with his product.

Pastner is not a great X's and O's coach, at least not according to anything apparent in his first 3 years of coaching. But he's got this stigma by being at Memphis and following Cal that all he does is roll the ball out for his players. He get's criticized for the bad games, but no credit when the Tigers play well. It was his schemes that let Will Barton get into the lane at will in the first half, and he made chicken salad out of chicken **** in OT when he had to play with 5 guards on the floor at a time.

I'm just trying to figure out how so many people from Memphis persuaded their parole officers to let them travel outside the mainland, looks like they have a good crowd out there.

Jokes from the UK fan. Kentucky fans always travel pretty well. Never have to worry about asking off of work.

I do support this team staff and players, but come on we lost 2 games and the folks on here are acting like we just won a national championship. I really don't have confidence that Martin can get the job done. That doesn't mean that I don't want him to be the greatest coach in TN history, I just don't believe he will be. If you look at the history of this program only two coaches stand out as really being excellent.

Which brings up the question why doesn't the administration at UT hire people who are qualified to lead these programs. Pearl proved that if you offer a quality product you will make money and the fans will come out to see you. The Pearl hire was a fluke, Pearl had never been a head coach at the div 1 program and really no one knew he could coach\recruit at this level. So we just lucked out hiring an unknown quality. Same with the football program and Dooley. If Dooley works out and competes for conference championships it will be a fluke. Chances are he will be gone in five years. Same for Martin he will probably be gone in five years. The Kiffin hire was a good hire as far as the quality of the staff Kiffin brought with him. Kiffin probably could have competed on this level. The fact that he had no ties and no love for UT and left at the first opportunity does not change the fact that this was an excellent staff. I no longer support UT monetarily. If the administration does not care enough about the fans to hire top flight coaches, I will no longer go to the games. Hell I can watch practically all of them on TV for free like probably 9 out of 10 posters on this board. I'm through spending my time and money on an inferior product. But TN is still my team even though the people who are in charge care little about anything except what the University can make off of the fans and contributors. I have been a UT fan longer than most of you have been alive. That will never change. But I'm not going to call a sows ear a silk purse.

Those who can post intelligent comments do. Those who can't post intelligent comments post insults.

I ask for your intelligent reasons why CM wasn't the guy in another thread and you disappeared. All I got from you was if he had won yesterday that would prove he was the real deal. Well that's 1pt your intelligent opinion is based on. I am still waiting for more???

You should try be a little optimistic for once. There is no reason at this point to believe that Dooley and Martin will be fired after 5 years. Based on the limited information we have on Martin at this time, there is every reason to believe he will be an excellent coach. Dooley came into a situation that no coach could have been successful at. He has proven to be an excellent recruiter and we'll know about his coaching ability as to development of an elite program within the next two years. No reason to be completely negative because neither coach was a big time hire. Let's support the programs and only reach you level of negativity when we have no other choice. It is fans like you that make it so difficult to have elite programs.

Willie sure does like to dodge questions that take some intellect to answer. Still waiting on your specific reasons CM won't succeed.

Do you think the fact that they went to double overtime against us caused them to wear down a bit?

I just saw the last minute of regulation and overtime.

Probably a factor, but not as big of a factor as milking too much shot clock with the lead, becoming passive, and letting the other team back in it.

Turnovers killed the tigers today. They were a lot better on rebounds but the TO killed them today. They will get a rematch @ GTown on Dec. 22nd.
