Game Summary (Memphis - 11/22)

I thought the guard play was going to be the stength of this team. Doesn't appear to be the case. CM said after the Duke game that it was a lesson, thats loser talk. I would bet TN will be in for a lot more lessons this season.
Troll or idiot....you make the call

1) Jeronne Maymon. Jeronne Maymon. Jeronne Maymon. Incredible performance. That's as good a performance as we've seen in years. An All-American worthy performance.

2.) Trae Golden choked. There's no nice way to say it. If he plays even mediocre, we win the game. Plain and simple. He was utterly atrocious on both ends of the floor.

3.) Dwight Miller, Kenny Hall, and Yemi all provided quality minutes today.

4.) Jordan McRae sucked. He nearly gave Memphis an 8-0 run by himself in the first half. He also played sub-par on ball defense.

5.) Richardson was excellent for a true freshmen. He clearly beat out McRae in this game, and if McRae doesn't pick it up, Richardson will continue to play.

6.) We dominated the glass today. Dominated. That bodes well for us in the future.

7.) This was a game of two halves. Coach Martin learned very quickly why it's not smart to play up-tempo with Memphis.

8.) The second half adjustments were fantastic. Fantastic. Good shot selection for the most part, and we controlled the tempo and the game.

9.) Big time kudos for Coach Martin for getting us in a position to win in the late game situations. He put his best player in a position to make a play each and every time. That's all a coach can do. And, it's refreshing to see that rather than a half-court heave like we saw last year on numerous occassions.

10.) The bottomline is this team can be good. We learned that we have some serious toughness today. We learned that we can compete with anyone at anytime even if one of our big guns is playing poorly. Congratulations to Memphis on a well-deserved win. Both teams played their hearts out today. It was a true classic matchup that is only going to help both teams going forward.

Go Vols!

go orange

With Martin, that kind of crap isn't allowed. That's becoming very clear. McRae saw where tossing up stupid shots and playing nonchalant defense gets you.

You got to be kidding, Golden played one of the worst games as far as taking rediculous shot. Throwing up off balance forced shots time after time. At one point he was something like 3 for 19.

Man ... some of you guys would complain if JC didn't make enough wine out of water.

Another great effort by the team today. 180 degrees from last season.

Another great losing effort. Its great to lose as a TN VOl.
We'll see if this team will win 19 games and beat some top teams like last years team did.

What were our options? Please share how you would have distributed his minutes.

LOve this team and their grit and hustle. Great coaching so far and the players really seem to listen to the coaches during the time-outs. Cuanzo needs to rein in McRae. He is not as good as he thinks he is (has potential) and should not take some of the shots he takes. Woolridge should be 9 or 10 in the rotation. Impressed with all of the freshmen and Miller.

Lets see Golden shoot 10 percent takes bad shot after bad shot and CM need to rein in McRae. Very astute observation.

where where?

Also, using the word "our" leads everyone to presume that you mean to be a VOL fan, when in fact it seems the exact opposite.

I am indeed a vol fan probably for more years than youve been alive. I have invested thousands of dollars in the vols basketball team. i will not accept that we have to hire bush league coaches and be a mediocre program. Not after the heights to which Pearl took this program. If Martin takes us to the top I will support him, but I have not seen anything so far that suggest he can do that. Our first real test this year has been a miserable failure.

Are you drunk or just dumb? This team has nowhere near the talent that last year's team did.

If Pearl was the coach this year, with this talent, both of these games aren't even close. Come on now.

Though highly entertaining, the fouls made this a very unusual game. Memphis lost its two big guys for basically the final 8 minutes of regulation and both overtimes and had trouble offensively when it had to play small (much like it did against Michigan without a post presence). Maymon had a great game, but almost all of his points came from offensive rebounds and free throws. Basically, the circumstances that created the way the game was played are unlikely to be replicated in the future.

Memphis was clearly better for 34 minutes and did almost everything possible to give it away. But once the game got to overtime, it was Tennessee's to lose and they lost it. I don't think either coach did a great job managing the situations. Both teams will be different when they play again in January.
