Game Thread: (11/12) Lady Vols. 72 - Gonzaga. 73

Looking at the stat sheet, it's hard to figure how we lost this game. We won the TO battle. We won the rebounding battle. We made more FTs, AND we shot better percentages from 2 and 3!
To’s and rebounds were almost equal. It could have gone either way tbh, tight game.

I think a couple more pieces fell into place today in a tough and controversial game. Franklin, coming off knee surgery, was a contributor today. The synergy between Jordan and Rickea is growing. Still many things to address but I expected a loss today and we almost pulled it out.
Not only Horston but their less others players forceing shots while being guarded well. Franklin will get better as her knee heals.

If it was a flop then you can add that to the bad decisions that were made. She is taller, faster and can jump higher than that girl. Make her shoot over you. Either way, they got the ball within 2 ft of the goal with minimal effort. You have already had a poor defensive possession when that happens.
It was a total flop. I think Franklin switched on defense and left the Zag star post player open, so Jordan tried to slide over. She was late, so she tried to flop but didn't get the call. @glv98 You saw this play too, right?

I agree with you but for an opposite reason. It was what Tamari did on defense that was what kept Tennessee in games. Even if they couldn't score, their defense anchored by Tamari made damn sure the other team wasn't gonna get an easy looks either. This season, she's just taking up space and opposing teams are not afraid to go right at her.

It seems like she is letting frustration get to her. In the category of another bad, there was a play in the 1st half where Tamari had a double block and the LVs would have possession but the ref whistled a foul. Both blocks were clean and there may have been some incidental body contact but the refs (as they should) were letting that go all game long but decided here to essentially bail out Gonzaga. It looked like that took some of the wind out of her sails. If I am right, that is a correctable problem.

It was a flop and a bad one, and indeed a very poor on the spot decision. Jordan works so hard, contributes so much, but crucial moment decision making has never been her strong suit.

Re TK, her hands, which have never been good, are bedeviling her right now. She literally never catches a pass cleanly, if at all.

And if she does not then do we settle for Phil not caring about the Women's program at all anymore as suspected or do we continue to give disclaimers for little ole Jolly for 4 more years and stay loyal to the program ? I call ******** ,

Well, I'm sure Ol' Phil would appreciate getting some Christmas cards from the disgruntled. He's probably a little bored.

I've been critical of the team for the UCLA game and the Indiana game. Why would I want to be critical if a team that played with a lot of heart today. It showed me that this team hasn't given up and they believe in their coach. They worked very hard on defense today couple different calls and it is a win.

Yes. I called it out on the game thread at the time. Even a hard foul right there would have been a better decision

Just because she doesn't publicly get in their faces doesn't mean she doesn't do it in the locker room. To say she has no fire is just not right. I watched her on the sideline today and she was full of fire. Just ask the refs. I thought she was gonna get a technical on one call.

I watched to and she did not lay into Key who was bad did she ?. Forget the refs your not gonna change there mind on a call. So let not make this about the refs, Marta was out of control many times today and i watch when she went to the bench nothing said to her.

It's funny but old folk used to say that "a bad beginning makes a good ending".
This is the first time in years that I've seen our precious team lose so many games before SEC
play.
Can someone tell me when and what was the results ?

And I counted three. But if you're gonna call that then, call it all the time. It could be called forty times per game.

Also, superslow motion replay really could not discern if she had started her dribble at the same time or not.,just too close to call at that point in the game. A ref should know better. If its not obvious, don;t call it.

So, you think chewing out players in public is a necessary trait for a good coach?

Yep, I only counted three because of the super slow mo. She put a little bunny step in there, but got the ball down just a millisecond after the third step. But in real time it was not discernible and it couldn't have been to the ref. It's stupid to call that there.

I doubt the last play was designed for Powell to go to the hoop. I hope someone asks. If I had my way, that play goes to Jackson with Horston crashing the board.

The irony is we played much more under control on offense today - until the last few crucial seconds. So frustrating.

First half or second half? If it's the one I'm thinking of in the 2nd half, she brought her arm down. I think it was a clean block, but that almost always gets called as a foul. Keep your arms straight up and the call goes your way.

That's been the thing. There have been a great many games in the past decade that didn't go Tennessee's way because of panic and lack of composure at the end. Remember against LSU one season where they intentionally fouled an LSU player when Tennessee actually had the lead by 1, allowing them to win the game at the FT line? More often than not, they have not been clutch at the end of tight games.

That Ref had been bad all day he called Horston for touching a ball that went into the backcourt that she wasn't within five feet of. it was a big possession for them when they made a run.

Yep, that is one of those things that is technically against the rules but is never called. We saw a few of those in this tournament. I wonder if the style is just different wherever these refs come from or if they came down from the states for the tournament?
