Game Thread: (11/12) Lady Vols. 72 - Gonzaga. 73

I listened to the 4th qt in car and Brian Rice was upset saying the phantom foul calls on us the walk and then the big pushed Jordan off to get the game winning shot. It sounds like the officials were determined to help the Zags stay and win this game. He was very adamant. In CHRIST Alone

Phantom travel call was a travesty. Ejim's game winning shot did not look like a foul. In fact, earlier in the game Marta scored in a very similar manner with the Gonzaga player flopping on incidental contact. So, the refs were consistent here.

In 1981 – 82, Tennessee was 2 – 4 after their sixth game.

That season, Tennessee made it to the first ever NCAA Final Four, losing in the semi final game to the eventual national champion Louisiana Tech and ended up ranked fourth in the AP.

The season is far from over.
Got to win that next game as home though I feel it is a must can't lose those home games and that is another good team were playing.

Looks like Colorado, VT and UCF are the only semi-decent teams on that run before Stanford. I think VT is legit, but have no idea how good the other two are. Tennessee should win both handily, I would think.

I’m more concerned about being up 4 under 1:30 and losing the game than the bad call. 3 shots in the final 12 seconds and not getting one to go down

The best way to judge Kellie’s coaching is to simply look at the last :15 seconds. First she does not elect to inbound the ball at half court. This with a team that had 28 turnovers against a pressing team, knowing that Gonzaga would be in a full court press. Then she decides to get the ball to Horston who is a turnover waiting to happen. She has coomitted more turnovers than anybody in the last 3/4 years. Then, look at the look Gonzaga got at the basket. They passed the ball around and got a one on one shot right at the basket. Ok, we are down to the last and most important decision. Instead of drawing up a play like Gonzaga with good spacing, she elects to have a player take the inbounds pass and drive to the basket and everyone crash the boards. Gonzaga knew this was going to happen and not respecting Tennessee’s outside shooting, had everybody in the paint. (Gonzaga gets a clean look, we get three contested shots)!
Basically, Kellie made 4 decisions in the last :15 and everyone was wrong.
I truly want Kellie to be the face of the program, however, the lack of recruiting, inability to get transfers to blend in, game preparation, and in game decisions is hard to overlook.
Has only 4 sec quality players. No athletic players, just big and slow.

ON NOT ADVANCING THE BALL!!!

Kellie said in her presser that she had wanted to advance the ball but that "there had been an action had already occurred that prevented us from advancing". she did not explain what the action. KJH added upon a follow-up, that she would have had to use her last time out to advance the ball and she wanted to save in case, they goy trapped in a tough situation in the last 5 seconds. As she pointed out, they got open on the in bound play so that was not the critical factor in deciding the game.

Good thing no one has called to fire her then.

Are you being facetious or being sarcastic (as in Mr. White hasn't made a call firing her)?

If you're talking about posters here, there were several today saying that we need to get rid of "her"...today! Rip off the bandage!

I was assuming that the her being referenced wasn't the athletic trainer.

In the press conference she explained her decision. It is not what you say here.

Colorado game is a must win. They beat Stanford a couple years ago so they have a good program won't be an easy game, but we need to find a way at home. Goal is to still finish in the top four of the SEC get to 20 wins and hope you can make a good run in the NCAA Tourney. I think Kellie made a mistake today not using that last timeout to advance the ball but she wanted to keep it to prevent a five second call but I think I would've took the gamble.

The ladies played pretty hard for the most part today. However, if I were KJH I would have to reassess some of my coaching decisions. Like calling timeout and not inbounding the ball on your side of the court. With these loses, questionable coaching decisions and coming up zero in 2023 recruits, if I am the AD I are thinking if she is the right fit for the program. There were some bad calls down the stretch but that does not excuse bad and questionable coaching decisions.

Yep. I rarely complain about officiating costing us games, but this time....

At least players can see how a few careless decisions on their part can be crucial in a game officiated like this.

If TN advances the ball the walk and questionable call never happen. It was close, maybe she took steps, but you rarely see it called on that kind of evasive maneuver.

It was a 50 50 call but I probably gamble it would've took her last timeout and she was worried about needing to use it for a possible 5 second call if we couldn't get the ball in. I would've gambled but she decided not to.

6'6" and she only had 1 stinking rebound against under-sized Gonzaga?? Key is PATHETIC! I don't care about her nails, her lashes, her race or any of that; but she's atrocious?? Does she even give a damn?? A damn midget could out-play her lazy ar$e? Worst start in my memory and right about now I'm so fed up with their lack of teamwork, hustle and basketball smarts?? Sure, a lot of that is on the coach, but players need to also self-motivate themselves and take responsibility?? Will anyone on this team step up?? I won't hold my breath?

If I remember correctly, Key rebounded her own layup miss which she subsequently made.

One thing about Key is she still catches and brings the ball down to shoot. They need to correct that she needs to keep that ball up there where she catches it should still be able to get up a decent shot. Bringing it down was a turnover three different times.

I still think they'll finish top 4 in the SEC, but they need to win at least 1 game vs. VT, Stanford, UConn, SC and LSU to get a decent tournament seed IMO

They can win the VT game and the LSU game, No chance vs SC or Stanford none just don`t have the talent to deal with those two teams.

I'm not conceding that either. We'll have to see how it goes this season is far from over. I can see 8 or 9 wins coming up and there are only three maybe four teams as good as Gonzaga or the other teams we lost to in the SEC this year. I do think she will need to think playing top teams early in the season start out more like LSU who are 5 and 0 and have played no one and don't plan to until SEC play comes around.

Obviously if you say it depends on her performance then she doesn't have a three year leash.

I think VT is the best shot as LSU is on the road and that is always tough. We will have to play a fabulous game to win any of Stanford, UConn, or SC. Need to win all the rest and all the SEC teams we should beat should relate to at least 11 conference wins. We may come in around 20 wins and be a low seed, but it is going to be tough cause we have no post presence other than Franklin and she is undersized and still not quite 100 percent. Key may come around but you really can't depend on it to happen. I think we were a little to ambitious to begin the season. I agree we should play all these games but I think when you this many new players you start out with some easy wins like LSU. Their best win might have to be Tennessee they are not really playing anybody in the pre-SEC season.

Tennessee players missed three shots at the basket that would have won the game. That's on the players, not the coach.
