Game Thread: (12/8) Lady Vols 64 - Alabama 74

To add to my previous post, the foul on Key did not look common to me. The girl grabbed her around her neck and threw her down.

I know I'm repeating myself, but Alabama committed multiple flagrant fouls against Key. Unless it's legal to grab a player and sling them around to the ground, which, call me crazy but I'm pretty sure that's not a legal play. I'm pretty sure Alabama's coach has had them play Tennessee this way for some time now. Just attack and pull and throw people around, and make the officials call it.

No worries, I hear ya. And you're right about Barnes being a different situation. He's a Hall of Fame coach someday, so I don't consider him and Harper to be an equal comparison, but rather reference him only to say that it's possible for teams to turn misfortunes around, even from apparent debacles of games. You're right that this is not a good look - for anyone, player or coach. It's not the first, either. Multiple losses to unranked bad teams is a very not-good look. I just don't know enough about what's going on with the team's chemistry or the coach's motivational strategies to feel like I can judge the situation. Maybe it's something that needs roster turnover to fix. It certainly appears that way. If the current players don't want to fight for forty minutes then Harper is going to roll up her sleeves and find some who do. Anyway, I hope she can figure it out also.

Yep, I think there's more than meets the eye. They were not that inconsistent the first 20 games of the season. This team just doesn't look right at this point. The Vandy and Mizzou wins looked ok, but there sure looks like there's underlying issues... I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist, but maybe something's going on since Rae returned? We may never know...

and how could anyone say that wasn't flagrant? Even the announcers pretended it was cool. I don't even know what happened with Horston. None of this is an excuse for losing (LV were lethargic for much of the game and should have used the fourth quarter press defense much earlier) but it still was something to concern over.

full court press from the gitgo
mever let their guards and shooters breathe,,,hmmm
I've suggested that before and was told we suck at pressing. When you're down, you need possessions and pressing is one way to generate more possessions. I would have begun pressing with the beginning of the third but that's just me. Our length can be effective in the press in my opinion.

Talk about going from the Penthouse to the Outhouse in a short time. Our men played a great game and ran Kentucky out of the gym on Tuesday night, and our Lady Vols go to Alabama on Thursday night and embarrass themselves and everyone who pulls for them simply because they did not have any desire to play. Auburn - Florida - Uconn - Alabama were all the very same games with the very same effort.

They were playing like a machine for those games, and then Green got hurt and Rae came back full time and we lost our mojo. Teams have bad games (Pearl's Auburn lost to the worst SEC team) but not constantly like we have been lately.
