Game Thread: (12/8) Lady Vols 64 - Alabama 74

When she was hired she said historically her teams play better as the seasons goes on but I agree it has been the opposite during her tenure.

She was milking the one time it actually did happen which, fortunately for her, happened to coincide with the time this job came open...

This is correct, defense is the Key to it all. We can't afford to give up 20 point quarters. Zero, we can't give up any and win.

I don't think Key's defense has dropped off at all. Teams aren't going at her anymore, and honestly, it's stupid if they try. You beat our defense by shooting over us and generating fastbreak points off turnovers. We need to lock down the perimeter defense and get back to funneling the opponent to Key.
That’s an amazing observation, I think you nailed it

Except for Horston and Burrell the other players are a complete disaster, no way they are top players, at least what players were back in the day.
Key will lead the nation in blocks and is maybe the best rim protector in the game.

This has been a consistent theme since Kellie took over... peaking too early then crapping out late. ..
Why is that? How does a coach achieve perfectly timed peakage? Is she doing something wrong consistently that's causing the crapping out? You'd think she'd have noticed over 20 yrs. How does a coach even control that? If they're too good too early you tell them to dial it back?

Most teams binge on cupcakes early and play much tougher league games later so I wonder if teams in general lose more the second half of the season. There's also fatigue and injury factors late. Alot of stuff you can't control accumulates. I'm curious how KJH dropoff fm early to late season wins compares to other D1 coaches. I'm sure there's a stat out there for that somewhere.

This has been a consistent theme since Kellie took over... peaking too early then crapping out late. They look like a completely different team by postseason, and not in a good way...

I looked it up and her teams at Tennessee loses more games in backend of their SEC schedule than the front end. It is because the tougher teams are on backend or something else?

I mean, they're losing to Auburn and Alabama... the dregs of the SEC. I brought up the point after the Arkansas game but the record regurgitators tried to drown it out. Tennessee went down and beat Arkansas at their place because they were the better team. They still managed to pull out the win, in overtime, in the rematch at home but I wasn't convinced at all the better team won that night. It happened Kellie's first two seasons here and it's happening again -- other teams are improving over the course of the season while Tennessee remains stagnant, and even regresses significantly in some areas especially on defense.

I don't know why it happens, just like I don't understand why Kellie sucks at bringing in elite recruits into what looks like a pretty good situation here. This is why they pay her that moderate WBB salary -- to figure it out...

I looked it up and in 19/20 the last 5 SEC games UT was 4 wins - 1 loss. In 20/21, last six SEC games UT was 4-2.
Tennessee went 3-5 their last 8 regular season SEC games in the 19-20 season and 8 is half of 16. I wasn't including their wins and lost in SEC tournament.

Tennessee went 4-3 in their last 7 regular season SEC games for the 2021-2021season 6.5 is half of 13 but I rounded it out to 7. I didn't included their win and lost in SEC tournament.

All is fair to report of course, but I stand by my post. The troll said, "This has been a consistent theme since Kellie took over... peaking too early then crapping out late. They look like a completely different team by postseason, and not in a good way..." How could they be "crapping out late" if they were 4-1 and 4-2 in their last SEC games in the past two years? And why shouldn't SECT games count? They're SEC games, aren't they? Kellie's teams have been worse in the second half than the first half, but they haven't crapped out at the end of the season. If anything, they have rallied late.

I am sorry, but you need to give Kelly some respect. The way I see it she is one of the best at coaching turnovers and teaching ways to miss free throws.

Oh those pesky facts. You should absolutely include the SEC tournament results, particularly the margin in which they lost both times. And of course, we know how Kellie's only NCAA tournament here went. She really has them peaking (crapping out) in March...
