Game Thread: (#15/12) Lady Vols 59 - Southern Illinois 49

I’ll be interested to hear what some of our more basketball savvy posters have to say but I did want to call out the positive contributions of Miles and Puckett.
I am sick about Rae. What ever it was she was pointing to the back of her knee. Meniscus?
Miles IMO had a better game. She handled the point for good stretches, wasn't sloppy with the ball, and mostly played good defense. She had a bigger role to play than Sara, who didn't seem to do much outside of those two made shots, although they were timely.

I'm surprised that Green and Striplin were so quiet, tbh. This is the kind of game that Green should have been very effective in.

It can only go up, seriously lol. This was ugly. Burn that tape.
We got in a jam with the key players all out of the game. Key in foul trouble, Horston not playing, and Burrell injured. Dye carried us but she is not quite in the shape she should be. Those two buckets by Puckett were huge. If everybody is not ready for UCF we won't win that one. Kellie will also need to cut the rotation down there I saw the players that could defend and the ones who couldn't it was obvious.

Horrible game. Nothing has changed from last year. Zero effort, zero hustle, zero give-a-damn.
I'm sorry, but that's just dumb. Jordan Walker and Miles no effort or hustle? Did you actually watch the game?
Might be her attitude and body language!!
I think that may be it. I think TK is way chippier on the floor than she seems outwardly. I can recall a few times over her career she's had alot going on verbally and even physically with opposing posts. Of course some of it is the nature of the position, the pushing and leaning. But I wonder if there's a reason every ref in the SEC seems to go out of their way to bust her chops.

Mmm

I expected foul trouble for TK this game because of the height differential and how refs usually ref in these types of games
Did not expect Horston to be out
Did not expect Rae to get hurt

This game allowed us to utilize the rest of our team and while you may think the team we played is not up to snuff talent wise.. but they are a team of senior players within a system and we literally played our bench almost the entire game(outside of Dye and Walker) and still won by ten… we have a damn good team. We played without 3 of our top 4 players… give it a rest.

Gritty win.

Very impressed with Miles. Puckett needs to adjust. I liked what I saw from Striplin but Dye was playing so well as was Keyen. Wynn needs to slow down a bit she’s similar to Rae her freshman/sophomore year.

On to the next one! **in my Jay Z voice**
Good comparison on Rae and Wynn. Rae was a bull in a china shop early on!

This will be the first LV team in history to miss the NCAAT if that was a season ending injury.
Don't think for a second that Jordon Horston won't step into that spot. They will make the tournament. Jordon Horston can score the basketball. She prefers to pass, but if scoring is what is needed, i have no doubt she will step up.

It looked to my inexperienced eye as if a lot of the new underclassmen were tentative and weren't quite ready to call their own number, to to speak. They played tight and even passed up a few looks that I thought they should have taken. And as the game went on, to some small degree, they opened up and got a bit more confident, and started making plays as a result. Maybe first game jitters? I don't know. I could be misreading it.

I give the ladies credit for coming back and showing some grit, but this was a hot mess of a game. If Burrell is out a significant amount of time, Horston and Dye will have to play their butts off and Key will have to be more relevant. She is still too passive. Walker did not do a bad job especially in the second half. The talent going forward is going to be a lot tougher than what we played against tonight.

Did Green have that many touches? I remember seeing her on like two possessions.

It was a good test, because this was not suppose to be a top team, but they were hitting almost every three and playing over their head. At any rate, we need to get much better very quick and possibly learn to play without depending on Ray, if she is injured for a while.

The SEC is garbage this year outside of SC and maybe Kentucky. Won’t be many opportunities for quality wins in conference. That puts pressure on this team to rack up big wins OOC

Hate to say it, but I think we’re gonna lose this game. Too much adversity and too many young players on the floor.

Horston - Out

Burell - Out mid game

Key - foul trouble

Poor officiating and a potentially emotional issue with Rae. This isn’t looking good.

Yeah, you just hated to say another negative thing about the team.

It would be a blessing if it was a meniscus versus
anACL. She won't miss the whole season.

Yes, sadly Darby was a huge liability defensively. She’s moving much better this season, but her anticipation is just off. Seems to zig when she should zag and is constantly out of rotation.

We did not move the ball well at all tonight. Horston will help with that immensely. Not having Rae also disrupted our plans. We passed the ball much better last season and we have the same guards save Rennia so I’m hoping that gets better as players gel. There are quite a few new pieces this season. Maybe more depending on Rae’s status.

Well she'd better. But until I see Horston and Key actually step up and do what has so, so long been predicted for them, I'm not going to bet on it. Injuries aren't a player's fault, but so far, halfway thru her career, nagging injuries have kept JH from delivering and constant foul problems have done the same for TK.

Now or never ladies, especially if Rae is gone.
