Game Thread: (#15/12) Lady Vols 59 - Southern Illinois 49

It looked to my inexperienced eye as if a lot of the new underclassmen were tentative and weren't quite ready to call their own number, to to speak. They played tight and even passed up a few looks that I thought they should have taken. And as the game went on, to some small degree, they opened up and got a bit more confident, and started making plays as a result. Maybe first game jitters? I don't know. I could be misreading it.

No I think you hit it on the head. They weren’t expecting to have to be the leaders. None of them. Not Dye, Not Walker, and not any of the others. That’s why winning is actually a big deal. You had your role players step up for the entire game and win it. They didn’t have their veteran leaders(Players with 3 years in the system) to look to this game. It was on the backs of Dye and Walker and the bench. I’m not concerned unless Rae and/or Jody have to be out for an extended period of time

I will say one more thing. I like little Brooklyn Miles. She wants to win more than anyone else out there other than maybe Rae. Oh, and Sarah Puckett looked really good at the end when it mattered! Give her a month or two to develope. She is gonna be really good!~

How can a team have this much bad luck in their first game. Horston injured, Key in foul trouble in the first two minutes, and Burrell injured before the half. Only happens to Tennessee it seems.

Me too, and I have to note how clueless this makes our self-appointed board experts about recruits. She was constantly predicted to be the one who would never play, while Striplin was practically awarded FOY.

Unfortunately, so far both Puckett and Striplin appear pretty raw, a step too slow, but with developmental potential. Wynn is still kind of an unknown to me. None are near where they'll need to be if Rae is gone.

Ten turnovers is an encouraging number, and 3 of those were by Key in her 14 mins. Walker and Miles had just 2 t.o.s to 5 assists. Unfortunately, Walker still can't shoot tho, 3-11.

I’m hoping it’s a strained meniscus. I’ve done that before on the takeoff. She did not appear to land on that leg, happened when she jumped like she hyperextended it a bit. Hopeful it’s just a sprain/strain. Rae is pretty flexy 🤞🏼🤞🏼
let it be this I’m still hoping for a minor sprain but I will take this too

An ugly win but they figured out how to get it done. A lot of players got some very valuable experience tonight in a stressful situation. If Rae is out, it's going to take more of a team effort by everyone from this point forward. The girls didn't fold and that's good. It showed a desire not to lose which is very important in my opinion.

Remember LA Tech and Old Dominion??? We've been headed in that direction for a few years. Not there yet, but after this season the house that Pat built will look very similar to those once storied programs. It wouldn't surprise me if the LVs fall out of the top 25 before Thanksgiving.

Miles played a lot this game because Horston was out. Good on her to make the most of it, but I still think she will play a smaller role compared to Striplin and possibly Puckett...especially if Burrell is out for any extended period of time. Don't think Striplin is FOY material, but she' should be good for a reliable 5/5 per game as the season progresses because the minutes will be there for her. Assuming Burrell is out next game but Horston is available, I expect to see Sara start.
