Game Thread: (#15/12) Lady Vols 59 - Southern Illinois 49

Whoa Nelly! Vultures? Carcasses? Irrational hatred? Seems a bit melodramatic.

No, it's pretty accurate, although expressed more poliitely than I would put it.

These "fans" come out of the woodwork to insult, hand-wring, pearl-clutch, gloat, mock, ridicule, and doom-predict every season. If it were after games, it would still be insufferable, but it pretty much ruins game threads unless one immediately takes the time to put the ignore function into overdrive.

The hilarious thing is that these same "fans" would be shoving to the front of the line to fawn over the same players when the team is successful. We've all grown up with, worked with, and gone to school with these two-faced, Eddie Haskell-type of back-stabbers who play Iago to Othello.

With "fans" like these, who needs enemies?

(There's a vast difference between a "homer" who can see no wrong and a fan who can be analytically critical when necessary while still supporting the team...and then the roaches who crawl out to gloat at a player's misfortunes on the court. The latter are miserable people who love to drag others down in order to gain some sort of perverse compensation for their own inadequacies. Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet provides fertle breeding ground for these losers).

The tl:dr version: The ignore function is our friend.

We need to remember who these officials are and pray we never see them again. They really are bad. Of course, it's early in the season for them, too, so hopefully they'll also get better. [Can't get any darn worse]
On both sides!!

It's clear Tennessee has a lot of learning and lot of growing up to do if they want to be a competitive team in the spring - Rae Burrell's status notwithstanding. They don't seem untalented but there's a lot of questions to answer in a hurry. And you can't shoot 2-15 from three and win a lot of games. You just can't.
It was a bad shooting night .poor Darby couldn't buy one!

Me too, and I have to note how clueless this makes our self-appointed board experts about recruits. She was constantly predicted to be the one who would never play, while Striplin was practically awarded FOY.

Unfortunately, so far both Puckett and Striplin appear pretty raw, a step too slow, but with developmental potential. Wynn is still kind of an unknown to me. None are near where they'll need to be if Rae is gone.

Ten turnovers is an encouraging number, and 3 of those were by Key in her 14 mins. Walker and Miles had just 2 t.o.s to 5 assists. Unfortunately, Walker still can't shoot tho, 3-11.
I don't get the Striplin us a step slow banter. She plays inside, outside and will do well .

Striplin seemed comfortable sitting at the end of the bench with Emily!!

You guys are killing me. Jordy didn’t play, Rae and TK both missed most of the game. Why are so many of you overreacting? Obviously if Rae is out for a significant amount of time that will hurt, but there were a lot of positives out of this game…mainly Brooklynn Miles.
It does seem at times TK. doesn't even want to be there...

Hi there guys…..just got finished watching the game and have yet to read through this game thread.

I came straight here to ask……was anybody else embarrassed or no? 🥴
What has always bothered me during Kellie's tenure is when a player comes out of the game, Kellie tries to say something to them and they keep walking. Walking away from a teaching moment! That would stop immediately!! When Pat spoke, the players stopped in their tracks and listened! You walk away when I'm talking to you, keep walking .

We really could have used Marta last night I wasn’t to worried about her sitting out when it was first announced but now with Rae season in question I really want Marta back on the floor

Even her little bit of experience would have helped. Darby didn’t play many minutes last season. We relied heavily on the freshman and Alexus to get that one done last night. The newcomers won that game after Rae kept them in it.

Was good to see a couple people step up. I’m holding out hope we won’t be without Rae for too long.

Brooklynn Miles played 23 minutes and Sara played for 20 minutes in an ideal world without injuries they wouldn’t get all these minutes in a close game but we had no choice last night

How do you know at this point in the season SIU is a bad team? They looked pretty good to me. In fact, they looked very good.

I think they’ll do very well in their conference. They have a very experienced roster and they play well together. Defensively they were pretty solid and took us out of a lot of what we were trying to do.

If they can shoot the 3 like that all season they’ll be very tough in their conference.

They executed their game plan really well too. They were trying to take the air out of the ball and score toward the end of the clock all game. They did it expertly and converted on numerous last second shots to beat the shot clock. Really limited the possessions for us and kept it close for them.

I could care less how she seems, in 14 minutes on the court, we were plus 13 on the scoreboard when she was in the game. That rang true last year too, when she's in the game we get good results.

Yes. Her presence alone is extremely important for us defensively. Teams are suddenly very leery to even attempt driving the lane when she’s in.

While she was on the bench several of our guards got beat back door for layups. This is partially due to the fact that they are used to having Tamari back there as the eraser. From memory I can only recall one bucket in the paint while T was in the game.

Late in the game their forward threw up an ugly running layup over Tamari and it rattled in.

I hate to point out specific player shortcomings, but honestly about half of their points were given up by Darby. She got beat back door numerous times and kept losing Love and the blonde who could shoot. Really got to figure that out or she can’t play against better teams. I was hopeful we had enough athletes to cover for some of our poorer defenders this season but injuries are quickly eating into any perceived depth we had.

All the fouls called on SIU in the 4th quarter turned the game in our favor. No complaints about the refs.

They were committing those fouls the entire game. The officials only started calling them the last quarter after Tamari got frustrated. Her frustration foul actually helped us out. They finally started calling the displacement fouls after that.

Their post defender, #25, was a borderline dirty player. She was giving me Cunningham vibes.
