Game Thread: (#15/12) Lady Vols 59 - Southern Illinois 49

once season starts players signed after have wait to next year to play?

Wondering about Shavers? I’m not sure on this at all.

I would think in her case she would be allowed to play immediately due to the circumstance. They had a coaching change less than a month before the season and she opted to transfer before they had played any games that counted.

I’m hoping a bit that we might pick her up. I know we were one of her final schools. She’s a freshman, but if Rae is going to be out we’re gonna need some help on the perimeter and she can shoot the ball.

They were committing those fouls the entire game. The officials only started calling them the last quarter after Tamari got frustrated. Her frustration foul actually helped us out. They finally started calling the displacement fouls after that.

Their post defender, #25, was a borderline dirty player. She was giving me Cunningham vibes.
Key needs to be more physical she plays like a wet noodle a lot. I am sorry that Cunningham still lives rent free in your head.

more physical??? hell the refs would have her in handcuffs at halftime if she plays MORE physical against players 6+ inches shorter then her she’d probably foul out in the 2nd Quarter 🤣

With Key it is the same as last season. She is being held by the opponent and that is not being called. When she tries to break away they call her for a push or sometimes nothing. If they are not going to call holding which was so obvious then she will get in foul trouble a lot just like last season. You can't prevent a player from holding you only the Refs can stop it.

Yes!! She’s plenty physical. Honestly she needs a little finesse. We need to find a way to run her off a little screen block to block so we can swing the ball and get her an entry before her defender is set.

Due size difference she posts up hard they almost always call her for a foul. Meanwhile her defender is allowed to shove her in the back without repercussion. That “travel” she was called for was a push. #25 two hand shoved her in the back as she went to dribble and moved her feet. I’m seriously over officials letting smaller players abuse bigs. It’s an advantage to be 6’6” in basketball, STOP PUNISHING IT.

You notice at the next level players like Tamari do so much better because they are allowed to actually operate. Guarantee you Tamari makes the W and is more effective as a pro than she will be in college due to the officiating.

She’s gotta learn to control her emotions a bit better and start politely communicating things to the official. I wasn’t above saying “excuse me sir, im being held!” While pointing to the the player literally holding me hahaha

Hard for them not to call the foul after that. Bring it up politely a couple times toward the beginning of the game and she’ll start getting those calls. When she does nothing then gets the retaliation foul call and mouths off and rolls her eyes it does her no favors.

See what happens with Burrell hopefully just out for a week or two. Knowing she is out tomorrow I would like to see Kellie move Puckett into the starting lineup at the four. Dye to the three, Horston hopefully back playing two, Walker one, and Key five. Back up Key and Puckett with Green and Striplin. Miles backup for Walker or they both play in some situations. Wynn in the rotation because she can really defend lock down defender. That would be it Darby, Saunders, and Rennie have to get better to play 28 total minutes 0 points, 0 for 8 shooting, and 1 rebound. Defense from all three was not what you want to see either. They have to get better to many minutes and to small a contribution last night.
The freshmen as a group went 5 for 9 from the field that is effective enough for them to play more and get more involved offensively. 0 for 13 from the three is a reason to not take as many threes and drive the ball more and take more mid-range shots.

Of the freshmen Miles seems to get her role more than the others. Puckett can play she has been a little timid in willing to take the shots and try to make plays she finally did that a couple times in the fourth quarter. I really like Wynn's aggressive defense very lock down can really guard. Striplin took a bad shot and didn't get back in the game. Her role is down low or mid-range around the basket.

I agree start yelling holding never push away backward always fall forward even to the ground if necessary to get the call. When you break lose pushing or moving backwards they will call you everytime.

I agree with the falling forward and even falling down a couple times early in the game. Make it clear the contact is excessive. Rae is good at this, she did that a couple times early last night when she could tell we weren’t gonna get calls. She went to the floor and forced the officials hand.

80 percent of her fouls are called when she gets the player off her by using her arms and moving backward into the player. She has to break away forward away from the player. She can always repost and sure falling down gets you a call 75 percent of the time.

Man, this person rubs me wrong. I’m talking disingenuous like you were taught to recognize by your parents and told to ignore And say nothing. I guess I failed that lesson, but I take too much pleasure in pointing them out, I know it is a bad trait, I was taught right. I just cannot help myself on this person.

Flip Wilson would say “the devil made me do it”.

The difference is that I am a basketball fan that appreciates UConn. While you are a South Carolina fan. I know that's hard for you to understand. I saw what KJH did in a game that a lesser coach would have lost. I saw a team without their 3 top players not quit. I saw two freshmen step up and play big in moments. I would wager that you saw a team that should have won by 20 struggle to win by 10. I saw a team that I liked because they did not quit and eventually took the heart out of their opponent. The man in the arena allegory fit this team last night and this win, so early in the season, will pay off later in the season. If Rae comes back and if TK can learn a couple of things, they are going to be a tough out come tourney time.

Did you watch the game? You gotta be a troll. These gals was behind the whole game in a dogfight. Get outta here with that crap
Yes I watched the game. If that was max effort, they in for a long year. Running at the goal and throwing up a prayer, missing most of them by the way, is not hustle. They didn't decide to play defense until they though they were going to embarrass themselves by loosing. That was not a dogfight. It was an opponent that player there butts off and a home that though they could put on the jersey and win.

Your right about her pushing with her arms. I feel she plays too upright and doesn't get lower and use her glutes to get position. That is rarely called a foul in the post.

Same with your posts.
My bad. That was the best performance of any Lady Vol game that I have ever seen. Is that better. Pat would have the names off their jerseys, and banned for the locker room. That was not a good performance in any way shape or form.

I post on the FB forum and let me post a positive here. Its not a bad thing that the team and these freshmen players had to overcome a lot of adversity in the first game to win. Won't be the last time and it shows them that nothing is easy at this level. Lets just hop RB is not serious.

And the posts on here about the sexist responses on the FB forum was not good. I haven't seen those but I don't read every thread on there. They should be reported to Freak if that happens a lot. He is pretty lenient on the rules here as free speech is still allowed but crossing the line is not.

No, it's pretty accurate, although expressed more poliitely than I would put it.

These "fans" come out of the woodwork to insult, hand-wring, pearl-clutch, gloat, mock, ridicule, and doom-predict every season. If it were after games, it would still be insufferable, but it pretty much ruins game threads unless one immediately takes the time to put the ignore function into overdrive.

The hilarious thing is that these same "fans" would be shoving to the front of the line to fawn over the same players when the team is successful. We've all grown up with, worked with, and gone to school with these two-faced, Eddie Haskell-type of back-stabbers who play Iago to Othello.

With "fans" like these, who needs enemies?

(There's a vast difference between a "homer" who can see no wrong and a fan who can be analytically critical when necessary while still supporting the team...and then the roaches who crawl out to gloat at a player's misfortunes on the court. The latter are miserable people who love to drag others down in order to gain some sort of perverse compensation for their own inadequacies. Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet provides fertle breeding ground for these losers).

The tl:dr version: The ignore function is our friend.
Impressive literature reference! Well played!!

We did go 17 to 2 in the fourth quarter when Key was able to play the most of her minutes in the game. She is going to be a major factor how well we do this season. We need her in there at least 25 up to 30 minutes.
Even without Rae, Tamari will keep Tennessee competitive in most games because of her ability to be so disruptive on defense. Even if Tennessee has trouble scoring, their defense will allow them to pull off some games that they have no business winning.

The poster admitted Key was being displaced and they finally start calling it. No one on SIU’s team should even be able to displace Key😂
