Game Thread: (16/14) Lady Vols 86 - Mississippi State 64

She needs to shoot it more! She has great touch. So nice to see her get lots of looks tonight. 14 shot attempts is monster for her. 23, 15 and 6 on a tweaked ankle, that’s my girl!
They were saying tonight in the presser that when Key gets 10 shot attempts in a game, she averages 19 points and 12 rebounds. If I were a guard on that team, I would find a way to get her 10 shot attempts a game with those kind of numbers.

So... Coach Mulkey said they clinched the #2 seed no matter what happens at TN. They would be tied and TN would hold the tie breaker and FL would have 5 losses.

Someone help me figure that out ... Also, i didn't watch but i guess Alexis Morris went out in the 1st qtr. I'm sure she will be back

Went back and watched Coach Mulkey's interview twice. She said they (LSU) clinched 2nd place in the conference, regardless of what happens at Tennessee. That is true. But if we beat them, we will be tied with them (LSU) for 2nd place and would have the tie breaker giving us the number 2 seed in the tournament.

Here is the deal. Couch Mulkey said that LSU clinched finishing number 2 in the league. She did not say the number 2 seed. She is correct, LSU will be number two in the league, but if they would lose to us they be tied for #2 in the league with us and we would be the #2 seed since we beat them. If we lose to LSU and Florida wins their last game, we would likely sink to #4 seed because Florida beat us in a tiebreaker for 3rd. All bets are off if we lose, Florida wins, and Ole Miss beats S. Carolina. That would be a three way tie for third with each team being 1-1 against the other teams. It is too late tonight to figure the fall out from that one. In any case, we will be in great shape about everything if we beat LSU (#2 seed, 2nd in conference, and likely host of the first two rounds of the NCAAs).
Note: Sorry if some of this repeats what other people posted about the seedings. I should have read those before posting.

I kept yelling Burrell what are you doing guess she didn't hear me. Kellie sure needs to have a talk with her about decision making.

Her TOs are a problem but she is getting to the rim, with decent looks. Not sure why she can't finish, if it is the knee effecting her lift or something else. And even her jump shot is not that consistent. This team desperately needs her to find her groove. But if Tess can shoot 5 for 6 from behind the line every game...

Snoop did a great job finding her teammates and delivering the ball with authority. Tess, in particular, was ready and let it fly.

If we can develop solid ball movement and screening action, we can be a serious threat next year with Darby & Pissott (and Sara) hitting outside and TK inside.

We had some offensive breakdowns with botched handoffs and getting tied up or stripped on drives, but there were some really pretty assists, too. And the team looked happy to be sharing the ball.

I was really glad to see Jessie get that breakaway layup at the end. She was ready to fire up a three earlier when a teammate got the play whistled dead. Jessie made some quick, accurate entry passes and played solid defense shadowing #23. In fairness, Jess had fresh legs and MSt was gassed at that point.

Not sure if it was Annie Hayes, but one State guard kept driving and kicking/throwing/cocking her leg to make contact on layups. Whether trying to draw fouls or just to punish the defender, it didn't look good.

Jessie has always been a great passer. She has consistently put more zip on her passes than anyone else, which I have always appreciated. Fortunately, I have noticed gradual improvement in the velocity of the passes of almost everyone since the beginning of the season when I was getting on my soapbox about how desperately they need to work on that. So it has been fun seeing that they have been working on it. Still not as crisp as they should/could be, but it has definitely gotten some better.

Darby is now shooting 50% from 3 in conference play. 26 makes in the SEC. Really great season for Tess, she shut all us up. Far exceeded expectations this season. Looking forward to seeing what she does the next 3 years.
Sorry to be a downer.she had a great game but again it was against a non quality opponent look at her scoring against the elite SC Stanford UCONN give us that what she did tonight and we can beat any of them

The timing of this game was ideal. They had a comfortable win so there was no need to go deep into the intensity tank (even more important with the team being even more shorthanded). On the plus side, getting Wynn some good minutes is great for her development.

LSU will be the real test of what this team can be without Jordan H.

Ok here goes If we lose to LSU, Florida and Ole Miss win then we would all be tied with 1 and 1 records so we go to the next tiebreaker which would be versus SC and if Ole Miss beats them they would be 1 and 1 while Florida and Tennessee would be 0 and 1 so this would make Ole Miss the number three seed. Then you go to the next team which is LSU if we lost then we would be 0 and 1 and Florid would be 1 and 1 so that seems to make them the fourth seed and us fifth. I think we need to be focused to beat LSU which makes us the number two seed. If Sc beast Ole Miss were fourth for sure depending on what Florida does in their game with Missouri we could be third. Them saying that we have secured the double bye on the press conference doesn't ring true as after the head to head you go against team finishings in the league so that would make us lose to Ole Miss vs SC while tying with Florida. Then to LSU they would be 1 and 1 versus LSU while we would be 0 and 1 that seems to put them fourth. We need to win or one of them needs to lose.

I disagree that Rae is getting decent looks at the rim. Her looks are usually from her backside on the floor after a desperation heave. IMO if the knee is hampering her its in the initial few step of the drive. Hurting her even more is how the drives develop. They are extremely telegraphed, she leans over, takes a few slow dribbles and then launches. Everyone and their Granny knows what's coming. Rae is such a good outside shooter, I wonder if a shot fake might occasionally be a better launching pad, like Vescovi does so effectively.

Balance is a big problem for Rae. I don't think I've ever seen a player fall as much as she does. It was always a problem, but has gotten much worse since her injury. She's on the floor at least 8 or 10 times a game. I suspect its a head thing, a physiological fall back (literally) for a play gone wrong. Needs to stop. Rae HAS to get fixed for our postseason hopes.

As far as Tess, Kellie made a great observation in the postgame interview. Tess now only has to shoot, not necessarily hit, to be a problem for the opposition defense. She's established enough of a threat where she has to be considered. Which helps open up the lane for TK. Of course we want her to hit the shots which is a double bonus. Hopefully hitting 3s against better teams is the next step in Tess' evolution into a solid SEC player. A summer in the weight room, along with Striplin and Puckett, would also be a huge help.

Wish I coulda seen this game. Did Secn+ have a fallout with ESPN+ on DIRECTV or something. In the past, I thought I could watch SECN+ games.

Anyway, saw the highlights, the thing I noticed with Darby is just how quick her release seems to have gotten. Whether it be confidence or continued practice or both, I am hopeful that can help her surmount the challenges against the higher ranked teams.

Can watch on the regular ESPN app live or on demand anytime. I have DIRECTVSTREAM (so much better and cheaper than cable) and access to regular ESPN is part of the package.

Yep you are a downer, but you don’t sound particularly sorry to be one.

SECN+ is free and you should get it on the ESPN App if your tv provider has the SEC network (ESPN+ is the one you pay for). I used to have this problem when I had Directv before I switched to Directv Stream, which is wonderful and saved tons of money, and using Roku. Anyway, if you are having the problem of not getting SECN+, you need to delete your ESPN App and reinstall it, I used to have to do that for almost every game I wanted to watch on SECN+.

That's not correct. We have secured the double bye. Ole Miss has lost 5. We have lost 4. If we lose and they win, we are tied at 5 losses. We have the tiebreaker over them. The first tiebreaker is head to head. We can't fall below Ole Miss period. Florida can push us down to 4 if they win and we lose Sunday because they have the tiebreaker over us. We have secured a double bye.
