Game Thread: (20/21) Lady Vols at Missouri

Missouri has lost to Texas A&M by 4, LSU by 2, Arkansas by 5, Kentucky by 6, Tennessee by 5 how is that for losing five SEC games. They usually can't finish watched them take a lead to the fourth several times and can never hold it.

Mizzou is well coached. They come in to each contest with a decent game plan and the players usually play smart, hard and execute it well. They often live or die with the three, and late in the game when the legs are tired the threes don't come easy. They don't have the depth that would let them match up with top 20 teams in the fourth quarter unless they've built a big lead. Of the five teams you mention, with the possible exception of LSU, Mizzou doesn't have nearly the same level of elite talent. But they do have a consistency of spirit and effort that makes them competitive in nearly every game they play.

Don't know what Missouri expects from their women's bball program, but she is a good coach. Might need a big time recruiter on her staff

Recruiting is tough for Missouri. A lot of high school kids still don't think of them as an SEC team. Of Mizzou's 12 active players only two are from southern states, three are from other countries. Missouri was a much better fit geographically in the old Big 8 and that conference was not nearly as tough as the SEC. And by the way, if the Big Eight Conference was still intact Missouri would probably be battling Oklahoma State for the conference championship. (For those who don't remember, at its dissolution the Big Eight also included Nebraska, Iowa State, Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.)

Will be interested to see JH’s season assist/to ratio after 6:1 tonight. Her improvement here has been amazing. She has got to be jumping up in SEC rankings. Big transition for her and she took it on like a champ!

Absolutely. She made some amazing passes tonight. They were the kind of passes that often did not work out but she has figured the time and place for those highlight reel no looks ones.

Rae tweaked an ankle a week ago. Wonder if it is the same ankle? Lots of bumps and bruises at this time of the year.
I don’t know that I have ever seen a player make such a jump in one year like Rae. You could obviously see her athletic ability as a freshman and last year she showed flashes as Kellie made her start on the bench to watch the flow and then go into the game. But goodness this year! Wow!!
Definitely all sec.

Hopefully, the ankle does not become a lingering injury. She was moving pretty well (amazing actually considering how bad it looked initially) but she will probably really feel it tomorrow.

Escaped tonight. Nothing else can be said.

Oh a lot more can be said. Great games from Rae, Rennia had a jordanesque (you know that other Jordan) 2nd half and Jordan H is trending in a very promising direction, very good all round game (9pts, 6 assists, 1 TO). I would have liked a bit more production from our posts. They both missed too many shots at the rim and contributed to many of our TOs. In fairness, sometimes the passes put them in a tough position and I think they were getting hacked a lot with no calls. But, they need to dominant when have match up advantages. Their combined stat line was okay (16 rebounds and 15 points) but we could have some separation with more post production.

Jordan Walkers 10 rebounds were key.

Armchair coaching, I am surprised that Kellie did not go longer with Destiny to help on the perimeter defense. The two post line-up was not effective at guarding the perimeter. But, Kellie made the adjustments to slow down the three point scoring when it came to closing time.

You flipping jinxed us, mad. What were you thinking?

No, no, no. The UT legal staff that the financial liabilities of destroying an entire state could not be absorbed because of the Covid-19 revenue shortfalls. Basic business stuff.

So, Kellie instructed the team to spot mizzou a whole bunch of threes and then let Rennia remove their beating hearts ninja style in the 4th quarter.

Re-watching and counting all of Frank’s flops. 5 so far in the first quarter. The officials bit on two of them. A bogus offensive foul on Davis and then another on Walker. Neither player made significant contact with her but she does have a knack for falling at the right time.

MIZZOU also had an over and back to end the first quarter that wasn’t called. Thought it was live and it definitely was on the replay. Not that it mattered much but we could have gotten in another shot.

Key intercepted the ball but threw it away toward halfcourt. Hansen interceted but was fully on their half of the court, both feet on their side. She then dribbled and took one large step over the halfcourt line.

WCCB officials are the worst always will be you just hope that you get the benefit of getting the majority of their bad calls.

Yes, also MIZZOU with a technical. Pretty sure they lead the league in technical fouls the last 5 years. Seems either a player or their coach has one in almost every one of their games I watch (which hasn’t been many this season in their defense).

Obviously a culture problem for them and a reflection of their coach. They play trashketball IMO. They run some nice offensive sets but mainly they get their work done because they toe the line between good physical play and just outright dirty.

Kasi not going and getting the ball is hurting us. I know she wants to stay rooted on that block so she can turn and score but she has to go meet the pass, even if it takes her out of position. Having to catch, turn and pass back out is better than a TO and makes the defense shift.

On the opposite end of that our wing players need to deliver the right entry pass at the right time. Against MIZZOU one dribble, a big shot fake and then a bounce pass to the post would have been more effective. Trying to lob the ball in they got a lot of deflections and forced turnovers shoving the post in the low back to knock them off balance. Something I wish the officials would call as this is part of how big girls end up with such bad back issues.

The way they were overplaying from behind and trying to tip passes if you go to the bounce pass and make the entry lower they will foul almost every time. If you’re coming over the top to get the pass and then have to reach downward it’s going to be a whistle just about every time.

And we threw several poor passes in to the post and i love KK but her skillet hands are lethal.Key gets pushed under the corner of the boards all the time.

Yep. We threw some questionable passes but it’s got to get better from both directions. Better passes and better receptions.

They need to call those when Key gets shoved like that. She gets 0 calls on the boards because of her size alone. They allow players to two hand shove her out of position. Being 6’7” isn’t her fault and it doesn’t mean the rules of contact simply dissipate because she’s so much larger than her opponent.

Like I said “Escaped”

I had a little concern about KK instead of Key down that last five minute stretch but I guess they wanted the experienced Senior in there instead of the sophomore. Looked like the plan for Rennia to take most of the shots anyway went away from the post that last few minutes.

Yes, and realistically Kasi is a more physical rebounder for us down the stretch. Key did a nice job on the boards but Kasi averages 8 a game to Tamari’s 6. I think that’s why they went with Kasi at the 5.

We’re better against teams like MIZZOU that shoot the 3 when we go small at the 4. Hard to absorb both Tamari and KK defensively trying to guard on the perimeter.
