Game Thread: 2023 Women's NCAA Tournament...Round of 16: Lady Vols v Va. Tech...Sat @ 6:30 ESPN2

Iowa St lost because they went 6/31, 19% from 3. Toledo was 7/19, 37%.
If we defend the 3, take good shots, and don't turn it over, we win this one 81-63.

Toledo is maybe the shortest team we've played in 2023. Their only starter over 6ft is 6-2 Jessica Cook who averages only 15 minutes per game. They also have no answer for Jackson and Horston should have no problem locking down their top scorer/creator Quinesha Lockett. Walker should have no trouble guarding Wiard and Darby should do okay guarding Goss.

Nice post. Thanks for the stats and thoughts.

I agree they cannot check us. They are a quality team that plays team defense well. Gonna have to execute offensively and not turn the ball over.

If we can avoid giving them open 3s and easy scores in transition I don’t think it can be closer than 15pts.

Agreed this is no slouch opponent. I definitely think part of the problem with Stanford last night is they didn't take Ole Miss seriously. The LVs aren't in a position to take anyone for granted and need this almost as much as Toledo to keep the good vibes going.
I’m gonna respectfully disagree I think they took Ole Miss seriously.they were very concerned about the defense OM could apply but OM was relentless all game long and it was just too much and you only need to be the better team that game cause it’s not a series

Toledo also outsiders Iowa State 42-32 in the paint. Impressive for a team that lacks size overall. Iowa State got outplayed in general that game.

I agree, coaches comments before and after the game show Tara was fully expecting this. She knew her team had not seen defense like that since the last time they played us and South Carolina. The physicality the SEC brings is hard to replicate in practice.

She was obviously worried about how her team would respond to the physicality and defense of Ole Miss and had good reason. Stanford never recovered fully after the first quarter. Ole Miss hit ‘em with a couple haymakers and they were on their heels the rest of the match, so to speak.

Not going to predict score but I will predict either Sara or Justine will break out of their scoring drought tonight . Good shooters get going at some point! Having another sniper step up would be fabo!!

I would LOVE to see Puckett come alive a little today. She really needs a good one for her confidence.

Thanks for your detailed post! My only thing to add would be that I wouldn't be surprised to see Walker guarding Lockett to begin the game. We'll see though.

Yes! I think confidence is everything for her! Tough to compare yourself daily with someone with the athletic gifts of Ms. Jackson.

No doubt. Kea just makes it look easy.

Puckett has been over thinking the game all season. On both ends she is a little frozen. On defense in particular she seems like she is way over complicating the game. She’s so worried about secondary and tertiary coverage she literally forgets her player has the ball in their hands.

Gotta simplify things and just play her game. There was no pressure as a freshman and she just came in and hit shots. A little more has been asked of her this season and it’s befuddled her a bit.

We just need her to hit the open shot if she has it and keep her player in front on defense.

That's a reasonable plan to keep Horston out of early foul trouble. I wouldn't want to see Powell guard Lockett, but Walker would do the job.

I’ll bet she sees more than 1 look defensively. I do think we will start with some size on her like Horston to frustrate her early. Then let the guards have her in the second half and keep fresh legs on her.

What do folks on here think about Toledo’s seeding? Are they truly a twelve? Was Iowa State seeded too high? Did Toledo have an unusually good night?
To me there is a difference between a twelve seed that should have been an eight versus one who got hot. Can that sort of team punch above their weight two games in a row?
Princeton yes, Furman no?

I think you are spot on. And it helped that Brink, among others missed a lot of shots at the rim (a somewhat familiar story). But, Ole Miss's had Stanford rattled and they were rushing things.

I think both teams were seeded appropriately. Those 5-12 games have always been dangerous in the men’s tournament. Committee did a really nice job pairing some great mid-major teams against P5 teams that needed to prove themselves to advance.

Stay in front of their guards and Striplin along with Jill will need to be prepared to step outside the arch as their bigs can shoot it as well.

the LV will have little trouble beating Toledo IF, as Walker said after the St. Louis game, they are "sitting down" on defense from the get-go
This is wat i said not to be cocky but of course it maybe close in the first quarter but i expect to beat this team and beat them pretty handily there is no reason we shouldnt

Another interesting article by Cora, this one about Walker. Her sister was at the game and talked about how strong and persistent Walker is. She also said that she and other families of players were noting how happy the players on our team seem to be. Funny how just a few weeks ago that many people were painting a picture of a team in dissention in which everyone was ready to leave ASAP. In any case, I will post the article here given it is not a "subscriber only" one. If someone could let me know if this type of article is accessible to everyone here, I would appreciate it.
Jordan Walker played crucial part in Lady Vols' first March Madness win

No paywall issue for me. Thanks!

I do expect a big W Iowa St was really slow and not very tall themselves. We should take care of business putting 4th SEC team in sweet 16. GA and State were close as well so much for desparinging Coach record against SEC looks better each day. In CHRIST Alone

Me being an old fart coach please explain why so many of these ladies teams including ours have players with one leg of the shorts pulled up as far as they can to the crotch ? And why do they wear tights on one or the other legs and the other one clean? Is this the fad or just to look sloppy and self promote?

by the looks of the earlier posted starter stats... we don't want to get in a free throw shooting battle with Toledo

Get Tess Darby an early touch and shot that way she gets confidence early. In every game when she gets early confidence she scores double digits.
