Game Thread: 2023 Women's NCAA Tournament...Round of 16: Lady Vols v Va. Tech...Sat @ 6:30 ESPN2

it'll be a twenty point win
I think we are Hungry. I also think our bench production will be big in this game. Vt goes 6 deep most games. Hopefully we can get them in a little foul trouble early and keep turnovers low. Powell and Horston had nice games against them first time around. Tamari was obviously also a huge impact on that game, But Hopefully between Rickea, Jill and Karo we make that up in by about +20. Tennessee 77 VT 60.

Rick let a 12-2 run take away his chance,,,Time out
when will they learn that a timeout is a weapon not a weakness

When Rick did nothing as FAU reeled off all those unanswered points looking super dominant, and had our guys looking super perplexed, I admit I looked at my tv, said, "Kiss my butt, Barnes" ... and changed the channel.

I was absolutely, positively, 100% certain of what the outcome would be at that point and couldn't bear to watch it.

Yes, I still believe the Vols were fortunate to reach the S16 without a true point guard, but even just a teeny change in Rick's normal time out philosophy may have shown the guys he's involved and trying things to get them going instead of just sitting/standing there while they bleed to death.

Ugh.

I watched that game and actually Barnes made the prediction in his sideline interview-- basically he said the vols were giving FAU too many open shots and that they would start to make them if that continued. That happened and FAU was so much quicker than Tennessee that when Tennesee fatigued a bit, they just got outhustled and run off the court. I do think Ziegler would have made a big difference by executing the VOl offense more effectively under pressure and matching up better on the quickness dimension. But I gotta say FAU is one heck of a 9th seed.

When your team is getting their ass handed to them, call a damn timeout....

So excited! The players look like they are having a blast, they looked locked in during their practice videos. They seem to be having a great time and enjoying the experience. Everyone looks pretty loose. I’m pumped y’all.

I don’t think we are gonna run VaTech out of the gym like our first two opponents. But I do think the VaTech players and coaches are probably a lot more nervous than we are. They have way more to prove for a change. Rare air for the Lady Vols to be the team with less pressure for once.

I said to begin the year that I thought Elite Eight would be a good goal for this team. No doubt they can make it if they play like they have been.

I’m going Lady Vols 68-60 in a tough defensive battle.

I’m my dreams it would be Lady Vols 80-56 if we come out and blow their doors off like I know we can.

If we are hot from 3 like the last game we are super difficult to guard. We had 11 3s from 7 different players. Our posts/forwards went 5-5. That’s almost impossible for most teams to guard efficiently. It’s so discouraging when you’re trying to make a team pick their poison and they just keep blasting 3s on you.

Toledo actually changed their game plan and we had only 2-3 3s in the second half but then we went to work inside because they were all spread out. That’s the way to do it!!

If we can I’d like to see us make it really difficult for Amoore to even get the ball. She’s the head of the snake for them. If we can make it really difficult for her on the catch and face guard her some they are going to get frustrated.

They don’t really have anyone else who can handle the ball super well since Owusu never happened. Force someone else to try to create and they will struggle.

Amoore is extremely talented, especially off the screen, makes great decisions on when to shoot and when to pass. That’s why I really think we need to limit her touches somehow. Really need to bother her and force her to give up the rock and play through someone else.

Traylor and King are quality scorers/shooters but cannot run the offense or create for themselves like Amoore.

They truly only go 6 deep and have all season. If we can get them in a little bit of foul trouble they will be in big, big trouble. Would be impossible for them to guard us/adjust if we are able to get Kitley or Amoore in some foul trouble.

I was thinking something similar, maybe like 72-67.

It's incredible how close this matchup looks like it will be on paper - we're a 1-point favorite on Her Hoop Stats and Massey, and ESPN has this as dead-even. Both teams are playing extremely well right now. I kind of wish both of us could make the Elite 8. From watching all the teams in the Sweet 16, I think both of us were among the top 8 remaining.

They're more efficient than us, but we should get quite a few more looks with our offensive rebounding (and we get a couple more steals per game than them). If we take care of the ball and even a couple of our players get going from 3, I think we should win this.
