Guard play will decide the game. We have height but they have quickness at guard spots and I think this is the biggest weakness with our team. I think we have some excellent guards but their size makes them slower and thus we haven't been able to guard in the man to man. We play the zone very well but end up giving two or three shots at the basket because we have to play it and can't get the rebounds on the long misses. I've looked over a few games and we seldom lose because of post play it is always guard play that does us in of course added to our unforced turnovers and giving up steals. Our slowness is evident based solely on how many possessions we give up to stolen passes. Vandy had 13 steals against us how terrible is that.
I agree, it’s going to be won or lost at the guard spot today. I think the inside battle will be essentially neutral.
Our zone defense is great except for the rebounding out of it. If you’re going to play a zone like that there has to be a shot call when the shot goes up. Everyone then has to matchup and 5 players need to block out.
I’ve noticed we often have a guard trying to leak out in transition before the rebound is secure. We are way better off sending everyone to the boards and securing the rebound before we even consider transition. Once you see it’s in the hands of a teammate then you can turn and sprint.
Plus if they stick around and snag those long rebounds they can start the break themselves.
