Game Thread: (4/5) Lady Vols 61 - Auburn 71

When ever we lost you see some fans start comparing the coach, negativity start pouring in.. Each time a good team kept winning, we kept rejoicing not understanding that other small teams are planning for us. SC was given their own shock by Missouri. Uconn lost to unranked teams like 3 teams when they have far better team. It's just a game. TN needs to learn not to relax to any team small or big. No excuses, move on and not trying to say wat Kellie should've done because that woman has done a great job.

You could also look at it as if we didn't lose the possession to a turnover we wouldn't need the offensive rebound to make up for it. Let's not have to compensate. But we have been doing exactly that all season, trying to outscore and out rebound our t.o.s. It was bound to catch up with us. The two Jordans and Rae just have to cut down turnovers. Period.

Stagnant offense and no pressure release puts Walker in a tough spot. This team plays incredibly hard defensively but tends to view offense as a physical break. They have to go hard on both ends of the floor.

Would cut down on all those player control fouls if our freaking offense would get moving as well. It’s much harder for your defender to be in legal guarding position if you’re actually making yourself difficult to guard.

Yep...without even doing research...and without even having to dig into Holly's years.

Under Pat, there was Ball State 1st round, there was the championship beatdown against CONN, there was a game in which we blew a 21-pt lead (to LSU?) and lost by 14 or more, etc. This team has overachieved; I remember games we list when we had been #1 all season. Jolly's last game that prevented the opportunity for a 4th straight was devastating. This game looks bad due to the rankings, but it's just a regular season game, and the real fans who have watched this team are well aware of their limitations. It's not a shock to some of us despite being really disappointing.

Although I trird not to look ahead, I knew Arkansas and Florida were coming up before CONN. I anticipated one or both of those games being a struggle but not Auburn. I hoped we'd be 21-1 when we went to CONN, but this should present the team with urgency to improve their well-known weaknesses.

Nailed it. Got caught in a trap game. Some of these responses are over the top and I don't understand how some folks can go from roses and sunshine to gloom and despair so quickly. This season isn't over. The team is probably going to come out of this tougher than before. Support your players. Support your coach and get back in the saddle.

As usual, I’m over here. Y’all love to sub post me. You forget I’m never afraid to own it. If you’ll read the post just a few above I make it very clear that I’m very aware of how I come across.

Not looking for your approval (thank God) and vol fans certainly don’t need your smarmy advice on how to act after a loss.

Scoot on out of this game thread Eva, nobody invited you.

Agree. The coach can't put the ball in the hole for you. It just looked like the effort wasn't there from some of the players. If they don't get over this quick, Arkansas will hang another loss on them. I watched the game against LSU, and Arkansas young players look a whole lot better than they did the first time Tennessee played them.

I tend to agree. Seemed to me she was feeling sorry for them. I know it’s been an emotional week, but they can’t dwell on it and tender emotions can’t be an excuse for losing.

I thought she was pretty realistic in her post-game interview. Yes, it's been emotional, but she noted that she is concerned by how shaky their confidence was last night, and the reality is they're without Keyen and that's not changing. They've handled adversity all season and have to find a way to get through this, too.

Yes, it’s probably the right approach. Just got to be confident for them right now and she can’t act all bothered.

I’m sure she was steaming mad inside, or at least some part of her was. They’ll get that part in practice though.

We got rocked last night....No doubt about it.
Study the film...Learn from your mistakes.
No opponent feels sorry for us, nor should they...

Too many thought it was inconceivable we could lose...

If losing a backup center is all it takes to discombobulate us so badly that we can’t beat the worst team in the SEC, then we were never for real. This loss will drop us 2 seed lines. We went from a 1 seed to a 3 seed overnight.

Not the same, IMO. Mizzou and SC are conference rivals. Mizzou’s arena is one of the toughest places to play (in the SEC) and when SC goes there, you can’t really pay attention to the rankings/record. I also believe Mizzou is projected to be an NCAA team. Auburn is not even close.
Funny how we can always rationalize it when other teams lose in an upset, but never when we do. And if you don't think UT and Aub are conference rivals, well, that says it all.

No
and players can't call timeouts to interrupt momentum and make on-court calls to discard the call of zone defense and instead up defensive pressure on a surging team when you have 3 fouls to give on a one point game with under 4 to go.

Everybody here knows I fully support and back Coach K...Everybody here also knows I will not give her a free pass.

One thing I don't understand... Horston was dominating the second half but mid to late 4th quarter Dye and Rae cost us 4 straight wasted possessions with bad shots and TOs. Horston had been doing such a great job creating (for herself and others), and AUB had no answer. Why did we not continue to go to the Horston well, until AUB made an adjustment?

Second thing I don't understand... I hate the zone. I don't understand the responsibilities and spacing. It appeared to be a variation of a box-and-one or a one-one-three. What it was, was an invitation to take wide-open 3s. We gave up 2 twenty point quarters.

What a terrible loss. And the thing is, it doesn’t get any easier. Our next game is against an Arkansas team that is clicking right now. Currently beating LSU by 20. After that, is another tough road game vs a Florida team that’s hot right now. If we don’t get back on track, the rest of the season could get ugly.
The bubble burst last nite so it is natural to be anxious about effect it will have on the future.....only time will tell and that time is less than one week ....we will have part of the equation answered by Monday around 9 PM

Swarming defenses again cause problems for the LVs. Too much dribbling and not enough off the ball movement. Overall, the team looked badly out of synch. Horston played well, Walker had her moment and not much else. This was a game where Dye needed to have more presence. Maybe Puckett should have had more minutes she seemed more locked in than most.

Defensively, they looked much less cohesive than usual. I would point to the loss of Green but they were just as porous with Key on the floor.

As noted, Rae looked like Rae of earlier days. It seems like her body is not quite ready to do what her mind wants. i would have rather seen her take a few pull up jumpers than driving in, falling down, and bouncing the out of boards off her leg.
But all that really matters is she really back by tournament time.

Reality, Saunders has a limited range of situations where she can be effective. Her reflexes are really slow so, outside of situations that call for bang and bump defensive post play, she is not going to be the answer for back-up. I think its time to give Striplin her run.

I am chalking this one off mainly to a bad night and look for a big bounce back on sunday. The made their SEC road tougher but they are still in the race.
I agree with your assessment.......reminder that our next game is Mon...not Sun.

The plan still hasn't changed win as many as you can in the SEC on the road and win the home games. Were still on the plan with 4 and 1 SEC road record and 3 and 0 home record. If we can win the five home games and hopefully two more on the road 14 and 2 is a fantastic record for SEC play. Not one team in the league that hasn't lost a road game. Only a few have won all their home games so forget this game and get back to what was making us win. Back to dominating the boards and better ball movement and less dribbling. Back to playing the tough defense that made us number one in opponent field goal percentage. We didn't do any of that last night. All team have a breakdown or two during a season next game is at home we have to win.

Context is your friend nimrod. Are you familiar with the season so far?

I was afraid losing Keyen would be one blow too many. Not that by itself it was worse than Marta, Rae, etc, its that it ended her career and also left us vulnerable in exactly the spot we're thinnest. We're running out of options. Also, IMO the emotional impact "gut punch" is why they looked dazed and confused and lacked energy last night.
Do you have info that she did not "get on their ass " ?
Exactly. I know this is painful to many but KJH is not Pat and actually has a very different coaching style. She is not an in your face in public coach, never has been that I can see. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen behind the scenes. Because we don't see it doesn't mean accountability and adjustment doesn't happen.

Before anyone says KJH SHOULD coach more like Pat and publicly rebuke players, she's been coaching almost 2 decades and her style is what's brought about the previous success this season. To abandon that for theatrics at this point seems an over reaction and a real bad idea.

It's a big challenge to bounce back, especially in the meat of the schedule but they've earned the benefit of my doubt.

Just so everyone knows cause I keep seeing it in the thread…..for some reason the Arkansas game seems to be moved to Monday instead of this Sunday.
