Game Thread: Fla ST v Lady Vols, Wed Dec 4th; Home-FCC; 7:15 PM; SEC+ network: TN wins 79-77

Like I said, I don't mind the fast pace and press - but continuing on a pace where you have one shot at the basket and if you miss it is right back to the other team when the shots are not falling into the basket will get you beat more often than not.
Guess it's a good thing we lead the country in O boards then

I follow both the men's and women's basketball teams - would be saying the same thing about the men if they performed the same way the women performed in the second half.

We were beaten soundly in the second half.

We only won because of "frenetic chaos" in the first half.
We won because we didn't wilt and die when what WAS working stopped working
We won BC we now have a coach who doesn't fold when challenged
We won BC the tradition of the Lady Vols of old is finding a place in the new team/org.
We won bc we didn't give up
We won in spite of negavols wanting us to lose

I don't think any returning player benefited more from the coaching change than Cooper. Her athleticism would've gone to waste in Kellie's plod ball
Agreed. She’d be averaging about 5 turnovers a game right now.

I like how well CKC balances letting Coop play through mistakes while also coaching her to a high standard.

Yes, Jill’s interior defense in the first half was a difference maker. She was giving Timson a fit with her length.

Latham needs all of Puckett’s minutes. I said max 10 for Sara yesterday. Truly don’t think she should be playing that many. She is 24% from the floor and 16% from three this season.

She is taking about 10 shots a game on 21 minutes. If she’s going to shoot like that there is no reason to have her out there shooting 10 shots a game.

Latham is a much better defender and rebounder. Shoots 44% and 26% and is playing 15 minutes pg. I expect her minutes to increase dramatically in SEC play.

Tess is still valuable because she is truly a knockdown three point shooter if left open. Teams have to guard her and it spreads the floor like we want. Right now teams are just waving Puckett off because her shooting is so bad. Giving her the Raven Johnson treatment.

Volball 09, have read your posts for years now and found them reasoned and adding to the discussion. Recently you have developed a penchant to discredit and downgrade some players that you obviously don’t like. This becomes a diatribe for you as you continue to beat that drum time after time. Your opinion is yours and constant repetition does little to bring anything positive to the board. The coaches should be trusted to say who plays and when. Constant negatively does not become you.

CKC said in a post-game interview earlier this year that Latham is a good 3 point shooter. Herr game stats don't bear this out. She is just starting her Sophomore year and played mostly in the empty Penn State arena, so nerves might be a factor as well as the new system.. So, I wouldn't put her in the category of Jillian and Spearman of people who should always drive rather than shoot the 3.. There is also a mistaken idea that Kim thinks all shots are good shots. She repeated again last night that she was disappointed with the shot selection. Remember that her Marshall team had very high percentages in their 3 point and 2 point shooting, respectively. She also said that part of the two month adjustment period is to learn to shoot the three in the fast paced offense. So, it is a work in progress for all the parts of her system to click, especially for players she didn't recruit.

A game requires in game adjustments. When something isn't working you don't just keep doing it and hoping it magically starts working again. That is what I felt like was happening during the third quarter and into the fourth - it was like - we are going to keep doing this in hopes it starts working again because it was working in the 2nd quarter.

I want this coach to succeed as she seems like one who is very determined to succeed. I just think, like any and every great coach that has every coached this game, one has to adjust to the ebb and flow of the game.

That said there was an obvious adjustment towards the end of the game where the team started working for the shots that were closer in, where rebounds were possible and the chance to make them increased. That is why they held on and won this game. Had they keep throwing up bricks from beyond the 3-point line, we would have loss number 1 right now.

That is all I am saying - it was good to see the adjustment after what happened in the third quarter.

That is "coach-speak" and can be said for EVERY game ever played. this offense has very few bad shots bc it is dependent on volume shooting,,including leading in off-Rebs,,,which can only be gotten on missed shots

You can't ask a team to put up 40+ 3's and under 8 second offense and then ask for shot selection

She did adjust, yes too long in making the adjustment, I agree,,,but unlike other 1.1 second coaches,,she did go against her grain,,,subbing less,,,calling a timeout,,,and won

It was very obvious the FSU coach was taking advantage of the tendency for the fast shot. FSU coach did not panic because she knew they were going to get the ball back enough to make up the lead if those 3 pointers stopped falling.

I love the 3 after 3 after 3 if they are going in - but if a player and the entire team goes cold from the three, at some point you need to work for the best shot to get back into rhythm.

When we're in heavy press mode, I think sometimes the frantic pace carries over to our offense. We have to learn to play w pace without hurrying and losing control. Hopefully that will come.

Agree. That's what I've been thinking. That faced pace mindset seems to carry over to their shooting, resulting in a shot that seems rushed even when they appear to have time to settle a bit and get their feet right. Some more than others. I hope the game will slow down, mentally, for them as they get used to playing so fast.

Coach, we all love Sara as a person, but damn son, the girl moves at a slower pace than the rest of the fast twitch girls....If she was a Gazelle on the plains of Africa, she would be extinct on the first run for your life from the watering hole....

Go Sara go!

It is helping me to remember that Kim has installed this system a few times now and with great success. According to her, each time there have been early growing pains, and sometimes her teams looked a mess.

But as she has seen the progression many times, I'm guessing the same or similar issues have come up over and over again -- such as the frantic pace of the press carrying over to the offense -- but she has, every year, seen how, eventually, it all comes together.

Kim is quite sure of her system. There's probably a few more issues that'll come up in the future, but I believe she'll have them covered. She and assistants Jenna, Angel, Lexie and to a certain extent, S&C coordinator Horvath, are the ones who've seen this system being learned before, from week one of practice to whatever championships they were winning year after year.

They've seen ALL these markers before. Because we haven't we wonder if it'll work out. But I don't think Kim would be as confident as she is unless she knows everything is going according to plan.

They've got this!

A double-digit win against Iowa would sure be nice, eh?
Ask her how those markers turneed out for the same system by her boss at Sac State

Taking bad shots is not part of the system

That is the part you don't understand.

Are there "bad shots" in a system that depends on a wide margin of shot attempts? I think the coach thinks there are, and that's what the players are working on determining. It adds to the problem that we don't have any consistent 3 pt shooters so alot more of our attempts fall in the "bad" category. Hopefully they'll figure it out.

She's a Senior and won't be part of "team rocket" next year,,,but sheis also very strong, very smart, a 3pt threat and stayed when others jumped board...Got to give her props for that,,,her only weakness is her speed (and she's not alone) and her own mind at times

Hopefully this year, where everything and everyone is new will be the hardest learning curve ever. If not, they need to adjust either the system or how they teach it. Shouldn't be like starting fm scratch every year.

Other than her shooting % she's been playing good basketball.

Two steals against FSU, one of them was critical.

with 5 freshman coming in next year, you could definitely see some uncertainty with them. i think they will see a lot of minutes as a freshman class. our returners should limit the “starting from scratch” feel tho.
