Game Thread: Lady Vols 108 - Carson-Newman 63 (Exhibition)

We need a guru guard with handles that make us feel secure. The last one i can remember was Shannon Bobbitt. You knew for sure no one was taking her ball 1 on1 . Unless she passed and turned it over against the press. Horston has the size to see over but decision making when under pressure as far as passing ive yet to see if there's any improvement. Her looking to score was her main job yesterday and hopefully with the additions at guard that pressure is elevated a bit to where she's not the decision maker.
One of my all time Coach Summit moment was when Bobbitt committed that tech against LSU after a made basket and coach ask the ref who it was on and she said Bobbitt and coach yelled Shannon get over here but I love myself some Bobbitt

Just based on this game here is what I saw.

PF-Horston, Franklin, Suarez
WF-Jackson, Puckett, Pissott
C-Key, Hollingshead, Striplin
2G-Walker, Darby
PG-Powell, Wynn, Miles, Darby

This seems to be the way they came off the bench with some playing more than one position. Jackson and Horston are really interchangable in their positions. It appeared to me that Wynn was the backup point guard. Darby replaced Walker after about four minutes into the game. It appeared that Suarez played both the four and the three. Hollingshead appears to be the backup center but on offense she is all over the court.

When we cut the rotation in some games think we'll still see about 11 or 12 players even if they only play two or three minutes.

Walker is going to be spending a lot of time at PG. Wynn isn't going to get off the bench unless she figures out how to put the ball in the hole. Last year she couldn't finish at the rim or make FT's, and from this one exhibition game, it doesn't look like much has changed.

In this game Walker was the starting two guard and Wynn was the backup point guard of course that might just be for this game.

In Kellie’s comments after the game:

On playing every active player on the roster today and excitement of the team depth…
"Well, our depth is our strength, we know that. Game to game I don't know what that is going to look like. Going into this game, the minutes were scripted out. I knew how many minutes we were going to play each player. I think the only deviation we had was Jordan Horston. I had her down for a few more minutes but she was pretty productive with 12 so we stopped there. It got a little choppy at times in terms of our substitutions and who we were playing with, but we wanted to make sure everybody was getting a certain number of minutes so the next time out, they feel comfortable. Each game it may be somebody different step up. It won't be predetermined moving forward."

We had 4 players who were the top scorers and also the highest in efficiency. They are Horston, Sara, Rickea, and Marta. Then we have Powell and Key who will play. Walker and Justine are knocking on the door for minutes. Franklin will play because of her exceptional rebounding, her shooting will improve. Tess may play because of her experience and savvy, and possible better shooting days.

Of our 15 players, 9 shot 50% and above, 6 shot 25% and below. Franklin was in this group, but will definitely play, because of her rebounding. The others you can say had a bad game, or will improve, but in crunch time in close games, we’re likely to see the players named in the paragraph above, on the court. All will get minutes whenever possible, because that’s what Kellie does.

This was one game and it's stats don't count. Somehow I think after a few games the crunch time players will emerge

This was one game and it's stats don't count. To make judgments about shooting for one game and to ignore career shooting percentages for the upperclassmen does not make sense. Likewise to tout high shooting % for one game against a D2 opponent's defense is not necessarily reflective of % players will shoot for year.
High school stats were not touted or mentioned. The stats for this game do count. Will our players get better? Of course they will.

We all wanted to see how each player looked this year, especially Horston after her injury, Marta after her injuries, the Sophomore improvement from our last year’s Freshmen, and each new player we got from the portal. Justine had a great Freshman beginning, Edie, too. We saw much improvement in this team, and much hope for the future.

The actual point of the post was that this was a predetermined scripted minutes game, so lineups we saw were not what we may see in the future. The top scorers in this game shone like the stars they are, and it was not just because of the competition. Not saying anyone will not play, or will not play well in future games. If you’re thinking about Tess, yes, she did not have a good shooting game, but will have great shooting games in the future, I’m sure. Same for Franklin. It was the first look at our players, some already look great, some show lots of potential, all will get better.

GO LADY VOLS!!!

Just as the game ending horn sounded, Justine caught a pass and sunk about a 25 footer....She just casually walked away....The girl can shoot!

She makes decisions every time she gets the ball: Pass, shoot, or drive? She's also making decisions when she doesn't have the ball: Post up? double team the opponent?, etc. So far, she's making a lot of good decisions. That said, she's not a great point guard. At least not yet. She may become one in the league, however.

One thing no one has really talked about is the turnover numbers. I think they only had 3 in the first half, and only 11 for the first exhibition game is really good. Hopefully Kellie finally having a true point guard to run the offense will lead to her first team that actually values the ball...

Even a complement is a backhand to the face.
