Game Thread: Lady Vols 69 - Chattanooga. 39

I am going out on a limb, but if Tennessee play as well as they did against VT, they win this one easily. The big problem will be the subbing match ups and if they can get their pedestrian offense up and going. If not, this could make the game closer than it needs to be. I am concerned about our offense. The defense seems to have found its legs but the offense is hit and miss. We need Jackson, when she makes it back into the lineup, and Horston to take control of the offense. They seem to be the only ones who can create their shots at a high degree. I really believe that Powell has the ability to create shots but not to the degree of Jackson and Horston. Darby cannot create her shot, or make contested shots. Now I was impressed with TK’s defense and her aggressiveness on offense against a very good post. If she is like this the rest of the season, it improves our chances of being a very good team. I was also impressed with Striplin’s aggressiveness in the post. I think that Suarez is a very good player, however, she needs to play more in control.

Actually, we have seen Darby create her own shot several times with a ball fake and then getting open. She's just missed most of the mid-range jumpers. But it's a fallacy that she can't get herself open, although she's not going to do some acrobatic elevation or spin move...nor does she need to.

When the shots start falling, I think we'll see Tess faking out some closing defenders and possibly drawing fouls. She's money on the line.

I think when most say a player can't create their own shot they mean off the dribble. Tess has employed a sweet fake a couple of times, and her stroke is good, but very inconsistent. Hits em all one game, hits none the next. Of course everyone behind her is not hitting them ever, so there's that.

IMO if you are going to start a player as your 3 pt specialist who cannot create, it's poor coaching not to set screens, etc. to free her up.

Bookend Tess and Justine on the arc to stretch the D and run a triangle with any of, JH-TK-RJ-JP

Sure hope some of the players out Sunday can play today even one of them would be a positive. Hope to see an under control Marta. She could really help us if she would play the type game she needs to play.

Not a cupcake game in my opinion. We tend to just play to the level of the opponent and if it is still close in final four minutes, prepare to cringe.

Thinking it is time to start collecting funding for Jeff. He is also having a bad year, and might be searching for a fresh place to start over.

I'm like 99.9 percent sure it won't be Tennessee. I give that little .1 percent in case he has a rich buddy Tennessee fan willing to pay the 2.5 million salary that he would require. He is on a big downward trend of 0 recruits in 2023 just like us and another five star just got in the transfer portal. He has three fours seasons at over two million remaining at Louisville which they have to pay him and no one else will. So no he is not leaving there he will collect those millions and see what happens in the years to come.

if only we had played Justine 30 minutes per game we would now be undefeated. Why does Kellie choose to lose by not not playing Justine 30 minutes per game?

A team that took Belmont and Bama to the wire is not imo a cupcake. Especially given our results this year.

Can’t lose this one so hopefully we come ready to play 40 mins.

He is only 51. Seems rather young to be put out to pasture like that. But, you obviously know more than I on his contract. The entire Louisville sports program is currently heading toward rock bottom. He has all unraveled. I can see why he can't sign anyone.

Just not that many schools willing to pay what he is already making. He can get another job just not for what he is already making there.

Yes...exactly! Until we get our act togther (if we do???), Belmont would pount us right now.

Chattanooga plays four starters for basically the whole game. They rotate two in the fifth spot. A seventh might grab a minute or two at most.

Use our depth to wear them out. Press Press Press!!!! Take the fight to the enemy. Don't sit back and allow them to shorten the game. We are slow, but much taller. Let Key, Hoghead, Striplen serve as rim protectors....and release the rest of them as dogs of fury!

Looking at TN schedule they will need to beat 2 of these five teams to make the ncaa tournament i think. Stanford, UConn, LSU, Arkansas , South Carolina, with or without Jackson. I know there are some winnable games on the docket they should win. But there are a few that i think TN will have there hands full. GA,FL twice, Mizzu.

I recalled more once Tess step to side hit three while being guard. On fast breaks i saw put out like she wants ball to shot. If wait to throw to shoter just you can not shot. Tess makes good passes. Tess put hands out wanting ball wide open no pass. No body gives marta or striplin credit for pit player so teammate has layup. Like kellie said she wants grit or clue play

Well, I guess I'm available to sit behind Kellie and offer up some 'encouraging' words.

By 8:00 pm tonight, I want us to have 14 Lady Vols who tired out and ready to get a good night of sleep. No more of this laying back and being all defensive all night. The press will create some easy baskets which we desperately need. We are not a shoot 50% type of team on a consistent basis. But, we can bring the defense and hustle every night.

HerHoopStats has us as a 77-50 favorite. Even with our 4-5 record, we are still ranked at #17 by HerHoopStats - the schedule has just been brutal (#2 strength of schedule per Massey).
Easy to get back just beat most of these SEC schools that took the easy route to victories. 12 conference wins gets us in if we don't lose to any of these weaker teams left in non conference meaning Chattanooga, Wright State, UCF, and Wofford. That is 8 plus 12 for 20 wins and a top 4 finish in the SEC and into the NCAA we go. We won't be playing at home and will likely be somewhere in the 7 to 9 range as a seed, but we will have our shot. Still got to win those 12 conference games though and the road is very tough place to play anywhere these days.

We’ve yet to accomplish a true roadie this year. Do have the one neutral site victory over Rutgers.

I feel confident we can take down Vandy, Texas A&M looks really weak, then we have Kentucky, Missouri, Florida, and Miss St which I would rate tossups. LSU and Arkansas were the underdogs. That is our road schedule. I think we need to win four and really need five cause we have SC at home which we probably can't win. The other seven home SEC games should be wins. I think we need to get to 12.
