Game Thread Lady Vols at Florida

TN doesn't have a single player that can pressure the ball-handler. DD comes close, Nared can at least stay close to the ball-handler, but no one can stop the ball-handler.

I agree that the Refs in women's basketball are pathetic. I don't know why they can't find some decent Refs. Some of their charge calls are ignorant and they have no clue who to give the ball to most of the time.

I despise teams that hack and slap at the ball - I consider it a huge sign of weakness. But since TN can't hold a basketball in their hands to save their ever-loving life, Florida's hacks and slaps were a (near) winning strategy.

Welp, on to SCAR. We'll need another great game from DD and stepped-up play from Russell and Nared to pull off the upset.

Five home and four road games left and the next one we will get blasted out of the gym so looking at 13 and 8 going into the last eight with seven of them winnable.

Reynolds needs to be on the floor for 40 mins. Whatever her limitations, she takes care of the ball, rebounds, and prevents the offense from degenerating into chaos. Taking her out for Middleton is always a disaster. If CHW feels Middleton needs to come in for her outside shooting, then bring her in for Jackson.

Mercedes always looks lost in a scrappy, physical game and tonight was no exception. Nunn needs to get a lot of minutes in a game like this because she plays much better through contact and hangs onto the ball.

I really shake my head at most of the charge calls in basketball. Be it women's or men's BB games. The tie up ball might be the one that bothers me most in any games. One player has the ball and two or more jump on them, wrapping their arms around them and taking them to the floor while another or two fall on top of them and....tie ball.

Florida is a really bad team.......

True.

...Tennessee is lucky that we got Diamond and they don't.......

True.

...Offensive sets for the LVs is a mystery to me. I just don't see any kind of movements with or without the ball that suggest Holly has drawn up a play.......

Not at all true. I don't know why people keep saying the LV's don't run plays or sets. They clearly do. They just don't run them very well.

...TN beats Florida but I don't feel good about what I just witnessed by them.......

True.

...Mercedes must be sick. I don't think she had 5 rebounds......

I wondered the same thing. Worst game of the season for her.

...Jaime plays like she rather be somewhere else.......

I thought she had her moments. She at least didn't stink up the court like most of her teammates.

...Holly doesn't play Kortney and puts Nunn in for a couple of minutes.......

The bad rebounding got worse with Nunn. TN needed live bodies that could counter Florida's aggressiveness. Nunn was a tree. At least Russell is a tall tree.

We'll need a miracle I expect we lose by 15 or more.

We'll need great games from our McD's AAs and a career night for DD. SCAR is a tough venue and it will be rocking to the rafters. We'll see which LVs team shows up-- the one that beat ND or the one that got blown out by Auburn.

Yes. But I keep preaching that women's college Bball is a guard game. That is USC's weakness and unfortunately so it is TN's. If the LV's give USC some trouble I think it will be because the LV guards do well.

Agreed 100%.

Reynolds almost gets her ankle broken because of this kind of shenanigans.

Years ago when Alana Beard was at Duke she had a reputation as a defensive stopper - a reputation that was in part because refs refused to call her for a foul when she wrapped her long arms around a player fouling them to knock the ball away or darted quickly at them hitting them and knocking them off-balance and simultaneously knocking the ball away.

I didn't start watching the game until right when Jordan got hurt, but then and a few more when they trapped her in the fourth period, she seemed lost and turned it over most of those times.

Very astute observation. She committed 2 turn overs for the game.:hi:

We don't have the discipline and fundamentals to really put teams away. We led auburn 14-0 (!) and lost the game by, as I recall, 18 points. That is almost unheard of.

Tonight we had a 17--rpt. 17--point lead in the first quarter: 25-8. That is when I tuned into the game, and the Vols immediately went into their knucklehead mode. A few minutes later, the score is 27-23, florida outscoring us at the end of the quarter by 15-2. That's just not acceptable; it's the reason we're not a serious title contender--too many lapses. (Connecticut builds early leads and then goes on to win by 40 or more--most every game.) To our credit, we built the lead back up again the 2nd and 3rd quarters, only to see florida rally again and make it a lot closer than it should have been. But it was an outstanding shooting performance--one of our best.

I'm encouraged by the LV's not folding when it started getting tighter. Middletown is playing better. Only 2 turnovers for Middletown and Diamond had a great shooting night for her. I feared this would be a trap game with the Gamecocks on the horizon. Florida has played the LV's well recently. I'm glad the Lady's persevered and got that important road win. If they shoot well and avoid turnovers, they will give the Gamecocks all they can handle. The post game needs to be really effective on both ends of the floor.
