Game Thread Lady Vols at Kentucky

Her man to man defense against physical, athletic guards suck but hey she can shoot the three.

I would also argue that outside of Carter, then neither Reynolds, Burdick, Nared or Middleton can defend physical, athletic guards man-to-man.

Mass was a liability tonight. Her two made threes did not make up for all her miscues and poor defense. I'm sorry don't agree.

How do we get a player each year with a concussion so bad they miss most of the season?

I would bet we are using a criteria to evaluate these things that is different from everyone else's. I have never seen a player miss so many games due to a concussion and we have had TWO of them. That is either some really bad luck or we are doing something no one else is doing in how we determine whether they are ready to play.

Actually Nared can. Also, Burdick is not a bad defender either. Reynolds should be better she just gets too high. Needs to be in more of a squat.

This game had that edge of your seat thriller like movie feel to it. i don't know about anyone else, but I kinda get a kick out of watching Mitchell do all his antics on the sidelines when he's losing. Kinda reminds me of the theatrics of Kim mulkey. With that said though, Mitchell is a really good coach. He helped Kentucky break out of that traditional bottom feeding status

I believe the medical people must be concerned about malpractice or something because they seem to be erring way on the side of caution.

Sorry, boxer, but Micky did that.

This game should been double digit win if they would have gotten the ball to the paint. They were in the bonus over 10 minutes in both halves and 21 turnovers.

I mean after giving a team 6 or 7 extra possessions, Ariel needed to do something (big shot tho) but Carter prayer saved the day.

I did like Ariel battling in the post, Kentucky couldn't capitalize, we have the same problem we don't attack or try to get the battle to the player with mismatch.

I've been thinking the same thing. I just don't get why holly can't tell us how long she will be out instead of just saying day to day, which really isn't accurate

I saw Reynold knock a player down and it led to a steal. Then Reynolds bodied another guard and got a steal. How many steals do Ariel average a game?

Burdick and Nared I agree but for Burdick it depends on the opposing player speed, cos Harper didn't do to much in the 2nd half.

Middleton is not ready yet....She will turn the ball over and her D is weak...Not sure she will ever be what we hoped she would be.

Good win against a scrappy team.

Burdick is a better defender against forwards, not strong, physical guards. Haven't seen anything from Nared to suggest she can keep up with the better guards either.

Even Carter has been susceptible to the better guards.

Ariel plays better defense as part of a team dynamic, but doesn't have the speed or strength to be a great man to man defender.

Nice post. We are ok with Carter, we know she is playing the opposing team best guard.

Ariel has to play better, especially in big games on the road.

At least ill be in a great mood tomorrow because of this win. I always have a down day following a lady vol loss lol

A day, til the next game for me. Yes, nice win, we beat Kentucky at home just laying the foundation of our expectations, losing to UTC. We dont want that a part of the foundation. lol Bout to rewatch the game. MSU next...

The downside of our switching defense is that we end up with our forwards defending the opponent's guards. That is why you must switch back ASAP if you get the chance, which we don't do very often.

Kentucky isn't all that talented, really. They've got a couple of pretty good guards, and they play hard, and they are good at getting us and other teams to play at a fast tempo that is favorable to them--but they aren't exactly loaded with talent.

You don't see us actively trying fix the mismatch. Izzy double/double, maybe this is the start of her run.

Mane I wish she could play a year with Diamond.

Epps, O'Neill, Harper and Goss are great players. Bishop is a good defensive post. Their posts are inexperienced, but will all be good players by the time they are upperclassmen.

I wouldn't call them chopped liver.

I agree 100%. We should have won this game by 15 to 18 points. There were too many stupid turnovers that weren't even caused by UK. I think Middleton is a better player than some are giving her credit for. She got yanked when she put up that stupid spin shot and that was the last we saw of her. Our senior leader can turn it over repeatedly but let Middleton do it and she gets yanked for the rest of the game. Good win on the road. I hate that guy that calls these games on the broadcast. He is horrible and is clueless about some of the rules. Time to enjoy the win and move on to the next one.

Tennessee has pretty mobile posts, except for Burdick. Harrison and Graves are quick enough that it's not a total mismatch. On the guard side, with the exception of Ariel and Alexa, Tennessee has big guards that can do a respectable job with opposing posts. Burdick fits somewhere in the middle where she does a good enough job on posts or guards, but she's not going to be able defend the upper level at either position.

Too bad Tennessee couldn't get Diamond to commit as a freshman...

Agree with all that. Other than the final score, there wasn't much to like about this game. We didn't play well, too many TO's, got outrebounded, and generally looked like a mess for much of the game. Even the announcer and the officials stunk more than usual.
