Game Thread Lady Vols at Mississippi State

What is really sad is that with a half way competent coach, this team would have no more than one or two losses at this point. To start the season as a top four team and many believing we would be a lock for a final four bid, and now possibly not even making the NCAA tournament?? I think I remember reading some who said the only thing that could hold us back was poor coaching by Holly..

At 12-8 it is a disgrace to Women's Basketball to still be ranked

Hey, I agree completely. I don't think this is a top 25 team right now, which I completely blame on piss poor coaching. However, the AP and Coaches poll react slowly to dropping historically successful teams out of the polls completely..

Draw up the play for the freshman, she missed the layup and the 6'6" post and Graves where no where in position to get the rebound, Outside the Top 25 we come.

Russell and Graves were both boxed out. I think Russell may have tipped the rebound.

I don't know how you could really fault them for not getting the rebound. If the ball had rolled off the rim to the right of the basket instead of the front, it would have fallen right into Russell's hands.

Thats excuses imo, Nicky Anosike gets that rebound, Glory Johnson gets that rebound, Vicky Baugh gets that rebound, Candace Parker gets that rebound, Russell was barely touched, if she would've left her feet, she wouldn't have got "boxed out" look at the play again

I would bench DeShields and leave her on the bench. She's been terrible. No one needs to tell me about our coaching issues--about which I've been yelling since about a week after Warlick took over. Still, players must have some accountability, and DeShields has been weak---we played much better without her tonight. I'm beginning to think she is the big problem with this team. She's certainly A problem--why, I'm not sure. She comes in the game--and this was the only brief stretch I watched, and she immediately makes an ill-advised pass into the low post to....Cooper! I was amazed she actually corralled the ball amid all the bigs. It was the type of cute pass that DeShields likes to try regularly--and they usually end up as turnovers. DeShields then comes down the court on the next two/three possessions and takes two off-balance shots--both misses. If you are going to shoot, square up and go up strong. She is often off-balance and seems to take shots sometimes just for the hell of it. Her decision-making and general play have been AWFUL.

The player we thought was one of the most talented in the country is dragging down this team. Is she a prima donna? That's the vibe I've gotten from her since game one. Am I wrong? Is she out there encouraging teammates? No. Does she bust her butt getting back down the floor on defense? No, she runs/jogs at about 3/4 speed. Does she show any passion or fire or vocal leadership on the court? None that I've seen. The Vols have a lot of issues--and Warlick is top of the list. But DeShields, IMO, is right behind her. She was supposed to be the bell-cow on this team and instead she's been bad in a LARGE number of games--bad shooting/high turnovers. She's arguably been the worst player on the team in more than a few games--certainly in the florida game she was terrible, and she was terrible against kentucky, and she's been terrible in other games I've lost track of. Tonight she wasn't terrible--didn't play that much, did she?--but she didn't do anything to help us get a victory either. 3 points. That's not the way it was supposed to be, not at all. This team badly needs her to be good--and she's been just the opposite.

Teams like Tennessee, UCONN used to have superior talent to almost any other team in the country but slowly over the past 6-8 years it has spread and now thanks to girls high school basketball being better coached and girls learning at a younger age more and more teams (South Car., Notre Dame, Baylor, Stanford etc..) have that same talent across the country and its now trickled down to other teams in the conference as well.

Theres some truth to this but I don't think its a stretch to say any SEC coach except Dawn Staley would trade her roster for our roster in a heart beat. That's how good on paper these girls are supposed to be. So yes there is more equitable talent but Tennessee still has more than everyone but Uconn, SC and maybe Baylor

No, they wouldn't have. Okorie is not small. She's got height and she's stronger than Russell. She got perfect position and there was way Russell was getting that ball when it rolled right above Okorie, unless she reached over and fouled her.

MS was fortunate how the ball came off the rim. If it came towards Russell, that should have been an easy putback and possibly + 1. It was bad luck, but Cooper should have made a very makeable shot instead of blaming a player that would have to defy physics to get that ball.

Jordan played a heck of a game..... Carter hit some nice threes and up until holly made her usual substitutions we were playing much better as a group as I can remember this season so far... Then comes diamond in the 4th and things went back to the usual standing around on offense and throwing the ball into the stands and not stopping dribble penetration etc......holly needs to bench diamond and nared for the next game and see how the team competes without those two

She was the leading scorer against Florida and 2nd leading against UK.

If you want to point at players who have consistently not brought it this season, I'd start with your girl Andraya and Jordan.

Yes but their games are coming around. DeShields seems to have difficulty with the concept of team. That was my biggest fear when I heard she was coming here. My question is do we win tonight if DeShields doesn't play? Would we have beaten Kentucky if DeShields hadn't played?

I don't think Diamond's absence would have given Tennessee a better chance to win either game. However, I believe her absence would have cost Tennessee a couple of their wins. Tonight, her one TO in the 4th quarter was the charge on Dillingham (who is one of the best defensive players in the league). She had three of Tennessee's 5 points in OT. Jordan was 0-5 after hitting the buzzer beater to end the 3rd, and Carter took one shot in the last 15 minutes.

She has been about what I expected, minus the turnovers, but no one...NO ONE on the team other than Graves and Russell has provided consistent support. Carter, Reynolds, Cooper, Middleton and Nia have been MIA for 75% of the season, and I don't think that's Diamond's fault.

Every player on this team has been inconsistent and they all have a tendency to disappear after having a good game so i ain't getting my hopes up.

How does Diamond play for 30 minutes in a game and get zero rebounds? You'd think if she just stood in the same spot for 30 minutes a ball would come to her.

Oh, by the way she did manage three turnovers. Couldn't get a rebound but can sure manage to get turnovers.

Wasn't she playing on a gimpy ankle? I would imagine that would affect her ability to elevate for rebounds.

MIddleton will turn it over or have a shot violation every 4 times she touches the ball...She is a liability....Nared is not capable of playing SEC ball.

Sad Ball! Bad Coach!
