Game Thread Lady Vols at Notre Dame

Maniac, it doesn't matter if it was a specific question or not. You should have a answer! You get their attention by sitting them, explaining to them, that if she, they, don't take better care of the ball, then they can get very accustomed to the seat they're sitting in!
Everyone she brought in last night did the same things or worse. If the answer was just sitting a player, it would be done. The problem is it doesn't work on this team. Everyone loves to turn it over.

New to the forum but have been reading/watching the LV’s for years. Never had time to do much more than read til now.
I was excited to see the change in the team this year. I think it’s such an improvement over the last few years. That being said, am I the only one who thinks MR will not make a good WNBA pro? I rewatched the last quarter last night and kept rewinding and following her vs following the play. It wasn’t hard for ND to guard her as for the most part, she was stationary on offense. No movement whatsoever. Also there were numerous plays where she wasn’t even in the picture-never made it over half court. Is she slow? Not very well conditioned? She seems like a great kid, just seems to me to be lacking in certain areas. Call for the ball, no..demand the ball. Move around make it difficult to guard you.

First, welcome aboard. Perfect time to join, 🙄😂 If the game plan was to get the ball into Mercedes, she has to establish position in order to make herself a more available target. For some odd reason, when we look for her in the second half of games, Mercedes disappears behind the defense as if she doesn’t want the ball.

What might have calmed them down was running a specific set play that they know like the back of their hand just to see the ball go through the hoop and get refocused because they were getting so bogged down with what they were trying to do. Sometimes you just have to make it real simple. Especially in a hostile environment. They should come up with a couple of two-man plays for Nared & Russell and Russell & Westbrook. I know when UConn can't get going on offense Geno resorts to either a well known play or he just goes two-man for a bit. He did it a lot with Stewart and Jefferson also Tuck and Stewart or Stokes & KML. Now he will mainly does that with Dangerfield and Stevens or Williams and Samuelson. I think it would work well for the LVs because both Nared and Westbrook have a jumper, a floater, a 3, & can get to the hoop. That would get Russell moving and open up some space in the lane for her to operate more if the intention is to let her go to work & if she has nothing then you have a guard there with skills and space to work as well.

100% agree. There have been about 6 million ways this forum has blasted the coaching staff in the last week or two, but to me this is the most obvious thing that you can pin down to a coaching mistake/failure. It's possible that some plays were called, and the turnovers just kept happening too early in possessions to even get a simple play going, but I don't know. I know Holly wants to emphasize simplicity with such a young team, but...

Everyone she brought in last night did the same things or worse. If the answer was just sitting a player, it would be done. The problem is it doesn't work on this team. Everyone loves to turn it over.

Everyone was forcing their dribble.

Everyone was forcing passes, (both, within and outside of their abilities)

They were following the leader.

Cedes got clocked and she didn't get back on the horse. That was evident when Hayes penetrated and Cedes was already in her turn towards the goal instead of waiting for Hayes to feed. MR expected to get hit again.. . .She's human. But like a fighter that gets punched to a wobble....The trainer has to push them back out there and dare them to wince at the next one. Hayes made the appropriate pass (A little too deep in the POD though),,,but Mercedes knew such a pass was coming from playing with her all year. Yet turned.

From that point, Jaime tried to "force the game to come to her"...Can't be done.

+

Who leads the team, from on the floor? . . Jaime and Mercedes. One got hit and the other one was trying to play Super-Girl... By allowing the floor leaders to continually play like they were, the example for the younger girls was defined.

Leadership is more than just being a Senior and the elders....It's about awareness that YOU are being followed. Even when you don't think anyone is following your example.

You are always an example to be followed. That's why leaders are so hard to find. They can't be made, but they can be fashioned.
