Game Thread Lady Vols at South Carolina

We did everything we could to lose that game.

It's not like we were naturally the better team or ever had it under control. Kind of hard to do on the road vs #2 in the nation. In fact, if anything we made a hell of an effort to win it at the end. We had our fair share of mistakes, but considering the circumstances, this comment seems a bit harsh.

Couple of points on "changing of the guard" talk.

1) This isn't the first time another non-Tennessee team has won back to back regular season titles. In fact LSU won 3-4 between 2005 and 2008. If you want to say there's a changing of guard it's in who will play along with Tennessee and challenge us. Over the last 5 years it's been Kentucky. The baton has been passed.

2) The best player for either team wasn't in a uniform. Wilson is good but she's no DeShields either.

We have a couple of plays for back door cuts by Draya. Just didn't work that time.

I can't nitpick any particular player, coach, play, or strategy for tonight's loss. Overall, we played very well without a center against a much bigger team. Kudos to our players who all played tough all night.

abused us in this game. She abused Reynolds, who is only an inch shorter and has pretty good size herself. Usually, Mass is the lazy one on defense--but Reynolds was poor tonight on defense. No excuse for getting beat all night.

exactly.. with two starters out for the season...

Play with this heart and Tampa Final Four is still a possibility.

Welch is also built very stoutly

Listen...I think you guys win on a neutral court. We are not national championship ready yet. This game proved to me that Tennessee, UCONN and maybe Notre Dame will win out over us in the NCAA tournament if things don't change for us. Just my Gamecock loving opinion.

Welch is also strong as hell. I can't fault Cierra for getting outmuscled, because you could see she was giving her all trying to box out Welch, Coates, Ibiam and Wilson. Reynolds just stood there.

That was a great basketball game, wish we could've pulled it out, but nothing to be ashamed of at all. They played hard and Holly did her part as well to keep us in it with a chance at the end.

Go Lady Vols!!!

Our guard play is not Championship level. Sweet 16 for this team. hmmm Way to fight ladies, a couple more threes we win this game.

Welp, let's enjoy the rest of the season, cos to me all spots are open for next year, no one is a fasho starter and that sounds good.

Beastshaara great game. Burdick great game. Beastshaara be careful what you show us cos now we're gonna expect it all the time.

Our bench is young and will go as far as Burdick and Graves carry us. A perfect opportunity for our guards to seize the moment, Reynolds and Carter both will have to play like All Sec performers in order for us to advance far.

Yep Defense, Rebounds and good guard play win championships. Remember when we had good to great guards....aah the days.

I thought our guards played pretty damn well. How many did Mitchell score against UConn? About 35? I think we have great guards.

no one will beat UConn. The gap in talent is almost laughable. Notre Dame might give them a fight but I just don't see it. They play a nothing schedule all year so everyone is rested and injury free come tourney time.

Holly, besides losing to UTC, has done a great job. I wish Nia would have got more minutes, especially in the 1st half. #2 seed. If we had Izzy, we win this game.

Reynolds did not block out all night and that cost us. You can turn and watch the ball when it goes up; you have to turn and find the nearest SC player and throw your body into her. Reynolds is big enough to do that with anybody--but she didn't tonight. On almost every replay that showed SC getting an offensive rebound, somebody--often Welch--was running past Reynolds standing and looking at the rim. It wasn't all on Reynolds, but she was bad. SC is beatable, but we'll have to rebound better.

I don't think Moore played at all tonight, did she? I expected her PT to go down drastically tonight but not completely. The staff will need to assess how much of a factor fatigue played in this game. It is hard to say. There were a bunch of TV timeouts, which help, but we looked sluggish to start the second half--and you often see tired players stop blocking out. A game effort, however. Carter, Graves and Burdick, in particular, were stout.

They do have great talent. But they are coached very well. He does things in his practices that no other coach does right now. He thinks outside the box. That's what Holly needs to start doing. And, I think she is starting to.

Well that was def an edge of your seat thriller type game. The lady vols played a much better road game tonight than what they usually do. Loved the effort and determination against a legitimate 1 seed. Holly called a great game. I mean USC was unreal in the post and ya gotta wonder if they will be able to follow something like that up again in the tournament.

I think an error on Holly's part not getting Moore and Dunbar at least a couple of minutes. Dunbar is not going to improve unless you challenge her against the best.

Yeah, it wasn't as much about the guards as it was SC's dominating frontcourt. The three guard lineup hurt the rebounding abilities of the team.

I think SC should win over UT no matter the location. We just don't have enough size down low.

The thing I think you are beginning to realize is that winning the SEC doesn't mean you are ready to compete nationally. The style of ball played in this league will not win you a NCAA championship. Unless you are burying teams like TN (in its depleted condition) by 20 pts you aren't going to compete with UConn, ND etc... and someone will likely trip you up before you even play those teams in the tournament.

That applies to UT as well if we had won it. The SEC is just not a good league and hasn't been for a while. I think some SC fans were kind of insulted that the UT fans weren't looking at this as that big a game. But that was because if this is a big game for us it means we aren't ready for the national stage yet anyway.

And to the UT fans, you need to remember that the last UT team who shot as poorly as this one does finished with 11 losses. I suspect something like that is what we would have seen without Izzy. She was shooting our best percentage, and even it was a poor one for a center. UConn shoots a full 10% better than us at every position. You can't compete with the elite shooting like we do. It is not possible to play defense that is that good.

They haven't turned the corner yet, nor are they in the discussion for all league players, they're still young but for us to get to where we need get to without Izzy, they have to play better and they're not there and that's fine, their both only soph. Next year my expectations will be through the roof.

But yeah, I do like our guards, just wish they were players rather than just solid guards.

Reynolds played 33 minutes, had 1 rpt. 1 rebound.

Ibiam killed us in the first half but don't think she scored in the second. Welch killed us all game--19 points, 14 rebounds. She was difference. We did not put a body on her....

We had only 6 turnovers in this game--quite a feat. Rebounding the difference. Got beat by 13+ on the boards. SC had 23 offensive rebounds--that will have Warlick STEAMING.

Same thing I was saying yet you ignore/bash me for it! We should've won the game imo and I give Holly credit for getting the ladies ready to play and mixing it up but I would've like to see Moore and Dunbar a little more atleast for the fouls they could've dished out and just imagine a taller longer arm defender (Moore) starting against or playing more against Ibiam could have gave The Beast a little rest to do more damage! Ibiam had been averaging 7 points a game & had 12 in the first half, I would've love to put her on the line than allow her to get a few easy inside looks touches (which one thing Nia does well is front the post)
