Game Thread Lady Vols at South Carolina

I think SC should win over UT no matter the location. We just don't have enough size down low.

The thing I think you are beginning to realize is that winning the SEC doesn't mean you are ready to compete nationally. The style of ball played in this league will not win you a NCAA championship. Unless you are burying teams like TN (in its depleted condition) by 20 pts you aren't going to compete with UConn, ND etc... and someone will likely trip you up before you even play those teams in the tournament.

That applies to UT as well if we had won it. The SEC is just not a good league and hasn't been for a while. I think some SC fans were kind of insulted that the UT fans weren't looking at this as that big a game. But that was because if this is a big game for us it means we aren't ready for the national stage yet anyway.

And to the UT fans, you need to remember that the last UT team who shot as poorly as this one does finished with 11 losses. I suspect something like that is what we would have seen without Izzy. She was shooting our best percentage, and even it was a poor one for a center. UConn shoots a full 10% better than us at every position. You can't compete with the elite shooting like we do. It is not possible to play defense that is that good.

Next year the SEC talent will all be veterans, we should send a team to the final 4. Sc is not a good team, they're guards are not good, they run up against a MD, Baylor or ND, its over. The same goes for us too tho.

Bash, I knew you had it in you. I've said it all along you just needed spacing in the paint. I wonder if we can try Moore at the 5 though. You don't need her to score just to use her height for rebounds purposes and at least protect the rim. That allows Burdick to go back to the three and it still spaces out floor to get Bash in one on one situations. And bring Mass back off the bench as the first guard.

Same thing I was saying yet you ignore/bash me for it! We should've won the game imo and I give Holly credit for getting the ladies ready to play and mixing it up but I would've like to see Moore and Dunbar a little more atleast for the fouls they could've dished out and just imagine a taller longer arm defender (Moore) starting against or playing more against Ibiam could have gave The Beast a little rest to do more damage! Ibiam had been averaging 7 points a game & had 12 in the first half, I would've love to put her on the line than allow her to get a few easy inside looks touches (which one thing Nia does well is front the post)

a lot of fouls in this game. She is not ready for prime time but I would have played her a little more than 1 minute tonight. Warlick played Middleton the last 1.5 minutes of the first half, should have played 3+. Moore maybe should have played 5 minutes and not 1.

My head is killing me but wanted to say that Tn impressed the hell out of me with the fight they showed tonight. USC had every break possible, a full roster, homecourt, refs, and a depleted opponent and still our Ladies were in the game till the bitter end. Reynolds for sure needed to attempt a rebound once in a while but other than that, I can't fault them. Moore & Nared had a few good minutes spelling Burdick and Graves and then were taken out. Usc promptly scored down low.... big turning point.

Moore should have gotten more time is my only complaint,

Dunbar would've been a non factor. The moment was too great for those freshman and soph, Graves and Burdick were the only two players who played with confidence.

This is something Warlick should have tried--putting Moore in with Burdick and Graves and giving one of the guards a breather. You do it to see whether it helps or not. If you don't do it, you don't know--and even though we were getting killed on the boards Warlick did not do it.

Valiant effort by a injury riddled team tonight. Proud of them even though I hate losing. Maybe we get a rematch with USC in the SEC Tournament and send them home.

You do realize that our FG, 3pt, and FT %ages were better than SC's tonight? The difference was that they got 10 more shot attempts, mostly due to their +10 margin in off rebounds.

Thank you, my point exactly, you never know what you have until you use it & imo some players have longer leashes (Burdick, Reynolds, Carter, Massengale) than others (Moore, Dunbar, Nared, Middleton) in a game where their front court has an average height of 6'4" & we play our 5'8" combo guard (middleton) more than our 6'3" tweener (Moore) in the post and that is where we lost the game, in the paint

Nice quote. My biggest gripe too more minutes for Moore for a lil more rest for Burdick and Graves, they both looked winded but fought through it. Yes, we didn't quit, we fought to the end. I can take that kind of loss, its the losses when we don't compete that pisses me off but our ladies played to their max for the most part.

Damn, if we had Jewell Lloyd we win this game. Remember when we had guards who can do it all and make it look easy.

Moore only came in like 2 or 3 possessions to give Bash a break. When she came in it was during USC's drought. Middleton was in for like to possessions, but the guard pressure from USC was too much for her. So I get why Holly pulled her she was about to get feasted on if Holly had kept her in.

Well, despite the loss, the game was still somewhat encouraging. I feel pretty confident we win had we had Izzy. Obviously we didn't and won't, but still, it's worth noting and we damn near had a chance or two to win without her on the road and it didn't feel like we played particularly well. We had some good moments but it definitely didn't feel like we gave them our best by any means. Hopefully if we meet them again on a neutral location, we can bring a bit of a better more consistent effort.

Here's the thing: We played a 3-guard lineup against a fairly big team. If you're going to do that, your guards BETTER block out and help with rebounding. That did not really happen tonight. Massengale (40 minutes), Carter (38) and Reynolds (33) had 5 rpt--5--rebounds total. Not good enough. If you commit to blocking out, a smaller player can keep a bigger player off the boards--but you gotta commit. Middleton played 2 minutes, had 1 rebound--same as Reynolds and 1 less than Carter and Mass. Middleton will block out.

Didn't give their best effort? Are you kidding?

We shot 23% beyond the arc and we took 13 shots which I think against South Carolina might be a bit low. We had a few defensive lapses where their bigs were shooting point blank and sometimes missing but still getting the rebound and shooting again until it goes in. So, yeah, I think we definitely could have and would want to have a more consistent execution next time. If we just shoot 33% from 3 and shoot about 17 shots and have none of those lapses inside, we definitely get a win.

I'm not questioning their effort in terms of trying, but what you want to do and do (execution) are two different things.

Okay, let's create a worse case scenario for the first major game without Izzy (and another physical presence of Jasmine Jones). How about facing a number 2 on their home court and let them be loaded in the post with athletic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, and 6-5 players.

And the LVs were in the game until the final turnover (which is telling). The LVs margin of error is small and turnovers and missing open 3s were the tangible differences. The LVs ran a great, great half court scheme, their best of the year but just did not hit enough of their open 3s. Defensive effort was top rate particularly given the size mismatches.

And you have to give something up when you are short handed and undersized. Carter and Reynolds, along with Massengale were not crashing the boards because they were staying back to defend against SC fast breaks.

Good entertaining game.
SC had 21 Offensive rebounds vs 11 for us. Overall, SC out rebounded us 44-31. That was the game right there. As well as we played, we really missed izzy down low.

Just applaud LVs' effort on not giving up and fighting to the bitter end. I have a good feeling about our chances in SECT. We may even have a decent shot at making F4 if we hustle and fight like we did the rest of way...

Rebounding did us in and I knew if we could stay even in rebounding we could win this game. We couldn't and this is the one area in recruiting where Holly has failed to this point. You must have strong rebounding post players. That has to be a point of emphasis going forward. Could we beat SC in Knoxville yes we could by about the same number of points they beat us here. The players fought hard, but hard to out rebound 6'4" post players no matter how well you play. Look to the tournament and hope we see them again they are nothing special.

We went sent three to the boards and two back Carter and Ariel, in the 3 guard lineup. Reynolds is playing the three on defense, if Nared was on the court, she was matched up with Welsch, especially when Aja and coates were on the floor. She got punked the whole game, wouldn't put a body on any opposing player, one instance you can see her apologizing to her team walking back to their huddle.

Reynolds would be under the basket and wouldn't even attempt to jump or move in to position, to get a rebound, each case was shown on instant replay. It was my only other gripe with the game, I thought Reynolds would be tougher. She wanted no parts of Welsch. She was the weakest link last night. She has to play better.

Reynolds has to decide if she wants to be spectator or a player.

That's why I wanted Nia on the floor for a few minutes, then Burdick would have been matched up with Welsch. But physicality don't bother Welsch, you got be physical and have length.
