Game Thread Lady Vols at Stanford

The Lady Vols are 12-0 after playing a Stanford team that was trying to make up for a loss in their last game. The game was reminiscent of the old Kentucky karate defense by Stanford. Hard fouls were not called much, but there were sure phantom fouls called. Great team effort to withstand the excessive slapping and hacking and a great learning experience for our young players. Nared was all world, and Westbrook was exceptional. As an aside, the west coach referees obviously have not received the memo about the second hand touch being a foul. Westbrook was hit four, five, six times or more on several occasions, seemingly waiting for a whistle which never came. A good win with Russell and Davis not playing their best. We'll take it. Merry Christmas to all and Go Lady Vols!!

So glad the Lady Vols survived to get a rare win at Maples.

Seemed to me like everyone was a little lower on energy than they usually are, and Stanford really took advantage of it on the boards. It was weird to see this team lose out on so many rebound opportunities like they did tonight, but they still got the win and I'll take it.

Like others have said, though, I'm concerned that when the offense goes stagnant there doesn't seem to be a strong team strategy to get them some baskets when they need to get back on track. Seems like everyone stands around until someone finally drives the lane to either get a score, blocked, tied up or turned over.

I sure don't want this talented group to play like they're lost when in a half-court offense, but sometimes they still do. Gotta fix that soon!

Nared is amazing. IMO, Green needs to play a LOT more. A LOT MORE.

I think it had more to do with a very long road trip (11 days, I think) for only two games. And Stanford got one of the "real Stanford" team's weapons back. This was the team that is only one player away from competing with us.

I don't like the way were playing even though were leading. Looks to me like Russell should score on them everytime she gets the ball.
Merecedes was hacked constantly so was Davis. Nice coaching by Holly to keep their heads in the game no matter how homer the refs were

Mercedes Russell = 18 points
Jaime Nared = 22 points
Rennia Davis = 16 points
Evina Westbrook = 14 points
Anastasia Hayes = 17 points
Meme Jackson = 12 points
Cheridene Green = 8 points
Kortney Dunbar = 3 points
Tennessee = 110 points
Stanford = 68 points

OK Stanford 71 points not bad.
Mercedes Russell 11 points not bad
Jaime Nared 28 points not bad
Rennia Davis 9 points not good
Evina Westbrook 17 points good
Anastasia Hayes 12 points not to bad
Cheridene Green 4 points off some.
Tennessee = 83 points way off...

Davis seemed like Glory Johnson, she even thought about shooting or rebounding they called her and when she jumped up to shoot she was mugged and never got a call. Very pleased with her maturity to not let them foul her out. She easily was fouled on 5 shots with no calls.

A team like Stanford, at home, is going to be dangerous after a bad loss. This game could have easily been a "trap game" for the LVs who are on a long road trip right before break and they weren't particularly sharp tonight on top of that. But they maintained separation from the Stanford and were clutch at the FT line to close out the game (something that had been a problem earlier in the season). This team is showing that they will find a way to win even when they face some adversity.

Only 6 touches for Mercedes, solid win on the road but Stanford was the tougher team tonight. We were the better team.

I back Pat and Roll with Holly.

Sometimes one just has to go with the result and be grateful. I agree that this was a classic trap game. Home cookin' refs + good player back on the floor for the opposition + home floor advantage + excellent coach for Stanford + long road trip + holiday immenent = tough setting. Really glad they kept their wits about them and persevered. Other teams might have folded in the face of that comeback by the trees. Time to move on and enjoy some family time. Will be kitty kickin' time before you know it.

some of our good teams have lost there. I'm very proud we pulled out a win.

not many of us year long fans would have dared in early November to expect the team to perform as well as it has. And even some of the faithful boarders who drink from a half-full glass are adding a little more faith to what we're witnessing. Narde stated that there are no prizes for wins in December but I have enjoyed this team because it is a TEAM.

PHS always talked about freshmen needing to no longer be freshmen when the SEC schedule arrived.

Agreed.

Fortunately, this Lady Vol team is different from those of the recent past in that has a good habit of scoring well in the first half and got themselves a lead wide enough to take Stanford's best shot and still be ahead when tge game ended. That's all that matters!

Holly should reeeeeaaaaaalllly take advantage of this valuable lesson about starting strong.

My holidays are going to be extra wonderful this year going into them with the Lady Vols undefeated. If anyone had told me at the end of last season that Tennessee would be unscathed at Christmastime this year, I'd have literally laughed out loud.

Thank goodness I can still be surprised. I truly love this talented, coachable team, and wish them all HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

are they well coached any night?

Yes, yes they have they been coached well enough 12 days/nights... hence the 12-0 start you can throw anything in you’d like... but the one thing you can’t argue is 12-0. If you don’t like them being undefeated go find another team to be disappointed about them being undefeated playing 3 Freshman a lot of minutes. UConn is excepting application I heard but if you wanna stick in the SEC the ONLY two undefeated teams are us and MS St I am sure you can join them as they average around 4K fans per game.

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays everyone!!

Really good observations....guess because I agree with every one of them.1st game I have not been able to watch ...had to listen on LV network.Sounded like the samo samo being out reffed in Pauly Pavillion.

Sounded as if the refs let really physical play go on with post play and maybe that is the reason that we were outrageously rebounded by Stanford and for Mercedes having a subpar game.

If the " TEAM " can continue to improve game by game and they are not completely exhausted and stay injury free by March this team has the potential to go deep in Tourney play.I say that with one caveat .....they must continue to develop depth off the bench because foul trouble which puts 3 of starters on the bench for long periods of time puts this team in a bind like it did last nite allowing Stanford to come back twice from double digit deficits and be competitive in the last several minutes of the game when foul shooting down the stretch won the game......just how many times have we had the opportunity to say foul shooting down the stretch won the game in the last several years.

I was able to watch the game on the internet. Jaime Nared is playing like a first team All American. The PAC-12 announcers made her player of the game. We were out scored in the second have because, in part, we decided to slowdown the game. That seem to take us out of our rhythm. It almost appeared we were playing not to lose.

Our Freshmen appear to be the best group in the country. All night they played without fear. Hayes for a little thing plays way beyond her size. Davis and Westbrook play beyond their years. They made a few freshmen mistakes, but overall, they played a very good game.

Everyone was very aggressive except for Russell. Now with a few minutes to go she played real well. She was out of position on several plays and seem to shy away from the boards rather than fight for the rebound. Yes they double teamed her all night and I understand her scoring suffering, however, she needs to play the game the way she played the last few minutes of the game. Russell is unstoppable when she keeps her head in the game.

The offense slowed down because Meme picked up 2 fouls...Meme is a transition guard and Hayes is a setup guard. Meme pushes the fast-break-pace whether on the ball or off of it and Hayes likes to run it from the top of the key-set.

Not only MeMe with two fouls also Westbrook had two in 1st half and was sat down . When Davis was out of the game that also slowed down the pace because had to go to a zone defense and we just were not getting many defensive rebounds to play fast.
